Annoying thing about Feds speaches...

I was at the Stockholm open last week and after the Dent match he talked about how each match was so difficult because there were so many different styles, and that Dent was always comming in giving him no rhythm bla bla... Dent came to the net 3 times the whole match! and played like crap!(seriously, the worst ATP player performance i have ever seen live, felt like he made no effort at all and a tirade of unforced errors) This and the fact that variety of styles have never been poorer(same with surfaces, same same same) made it very .. fake in a way. I personally think this is a weak era and Federer is desperatly trying to make it sound so great.... Sad because i love his tennis... And yes i miss serve and volley tennis ;) And find it annoying that Fed put it this way when it is actually quite the opposite..

Wow, you're annoyed that he complimented his opponent. This fed-hate is reaching new heights. So you wanted him to say something like this:

"My blubbery over-weight excuse of an underachieving opponent that played like utter crap and disgraced the great legacy of serve and volley throughout his career was so bad that anyone in this audience would have taken him out in straights and I am pissed that I had to come out here and waste my time with this excuse of a professional tennis player. This whole era of grunting robot bashers and grinders is a joke and disgrace to tennis."

i don`t know but he did not need to lie, and i hate the praising of the opponent when it is not due... That is just silly.... He could put it differently and still be nice... And i actually liked Dent before(the match)

I agree, Fed doesn't need to sugar coat things Howver I disagree that Fed is I guess, hyping up this era. If someone played like utter crap, just say it, it's the truth. Fed fans that say otherwise who were nagging about Nadal being too diplomatic are hypocrites.

lol. I knew he had no idea what was going on during matches! All that twirling around with the racquet must be very confusing in the end! :)

I really don't think someone should ever have to say they're opponent played poorly, it's just not classy. Maybe in the sense that they didn't bring their best, I suppose, but they'll be enough fans saying that afterwards.

i agree...... That`s not what i am saying..

Just took a look at the youtube and Fed said that there aren't alot of players nowadays that play like Dent.

Mentioned his good slice as well as desire to come to net, and short points. So maybe Taylor didn't come to net that much that day, but overall Roger was correct that he's one of the more unusual players to play.

I think he also just trying to be respectful as Taylor hasn't played well in while. Against more successful players like Soderling or Tsonga I've definately heard him say in post-match that they had had a bad day, but he probably didn't have the heart to say that to Taylor.

Overall he's bee pretty outspoken about how the tour has changed since 10 years ago in terms of playing style.

I believe the OP's opinion is valid, but it rests on the assumption that Mr. Federer is lying.

As many of you know, people tends to see things from their own perspective. It is not rare to see athletes perceive his or her experience of the match he or she just participated in a skewed manner.

That said, there are times when Mr. Federer is convinced that he is in full control of the match when the match score doesn't seem to support his view at all--this is often perceived by many as arrogant.

Personally I give credit to Mr. Federer for simply saying what he perceives to be true and caring less about what the statistics and critics have to say.

In a similar manner, I would also give credit to Mr. Roddick for his sometime blunt and not so appropriate (by some) opinion. One has to admit that there were many comments from his press conferences that were just hilarious.

I saw a photo of Dent earlier in his career pre-injury and he was thin. I believe he is coming back from a serious back injury and surgery just to be able to live a normal life.

Its pretty gutsy that hes come back to a point where he is playing in main draws of ATP level tournaments and alot of guys are being taken dismantled by Federer lately as he seems to have found his form.

Back injuries are especially tough because the pain is excruciating and there is very little you can do to keep fit since your whole body needs the back muscles. They also take a very long time to recover from and you basically have to rest your back alot so you cant really even walk around much....the end result is you gain alot of weight quickly. When I injured my back, I gained 10 kilo and there was nothing I could do about it. I was only able to take it off 2 years later as the pain became more manageable.

Anyway, Federer seems like a decent guy and probably knows this. To Dent's credit, he seems to be putting together a pretty good backcourt game and his backhand was a weapon. The reason he didnt S&V more is because he was serving like 30%. Still, as a returner, you have to be thinking S&V when you play Dent each point.

Nadal does that all the time. Always too humble and saying how tough his opponents are. Let Fed do it a little! I'd love to see Fed say something like "Taylor was bery bery good today, bery tough match, had to play my best"...

I don't rate this era high at all, homogenized surfaces do tennis absolutely no favours as far as I am concerned.

Roger was being tactful. No gentleman would kick someone who is down, and Dent is obviously down. Serious back problems, and weight issues.

Ouch he never mentioned Mats Wilander

LOL. I think there might be kind of a mini-feud between them as Wilander had some unkind words about Fed few years back...he had no balls or something like that. I think its ironic since in fact no one reminds me more of Prime Wilander than Federer. Obviously the strokes are different but the footwork is very similar and the mechanical precision...each shot looking just like the other...as well.

Its good he modeled himself after Edberg though. Edberg was such a good sportsman and ambassador for the sport. Its hard to believe you can be such a big fan of Edberg and not of Wilander since those 5 Swedes in the 80s were so close knit. I wonder why Wilander went after Federer like that?
