I remember the 1985 final, where Lendl played some of his best ever returns and passing shots to dismiss John Mc Enroe. He confirmed to be the best player of the year.

Ivan came to Antwerp with 43 consecutive sets won in official matches, and he played great there too. John won first with two breaks after just 30 minutes. Lendl had 4-1 in second but John came back to 5-5, just to loss next 2 games. In 3rd Lendl made break at the start and again in 7th game, to finish it 6-2. Another two breaks in 1st and 5th game of 4th set were enough. He won tournament for the 3rd time in 5 years and with 200000$ in price he received full size golden racquet with 1420 diamonds, worth of some 700000$

Not bad for few days of work :D

Atp recognition

Interesting that the atp now recognize the grand slam cup as a tournament win when they didnt in the 90s but still dont recognize the european community championship as a tournament win. Seems unfair particularly since the ec championships had such deep fields.

Tournament totals

If the ec championships did get official recognition it would push lendls title total to nearly 100 and mcenroes total to 80 titles.

is it because it was 'invitational' before 1992 ?

by the way, don't they (the ATP) take the 'pepsi grand slam' into account ? and what were the entrance rules for this one ?...

That's what that racquet was worth? I remembered that if a player won 3 out f 5 times that he won that racquet, and that Lendl had done it. $700,000 is a nice piece of change.

I have this one one cassette J.McEnroe - M.Mecir 6-3 1-6 7-6(5) 5-7 6-2. Absolutely great stuff. John was still rusty from his break so his serve was not hot, but there was enough of the magic and touch to add to Mecir's incredible gets and deceptive shots to be a showcase for every shot in the sport. John had his hands full

Yeah, Ivan done that and took almost 1000000$. For sure that must have been greatest money in tennis ever in that moment

Antwerp was the biggest price money event of the 80´s.I think, in the 90´s, the Gran Slam Cup in Munich was even bigger.

It was m8!! When ATP announce new ATP Tour starting in 1990. ITF wanted something more than Majors and Davis Cup.. so they made Gran Slam Cup, with great money in the game

It was a continuation of the Pepsi GS ( just 4 men´s field) that run at the late 70´s-early 80´s at Boca Raton, Florida. But it was an indoor event with a 16 men field.

The idea was pretty good but, of course, trying to outshadow the ATP Finals (formerly Masters ) was idiotic.Money isn´t everything.

It makes very little sense that the Pepsi event is considered part of the official record by the ATP, but Antwerp isn't, when it clearly was a better tournament in every respect.

Pepsi Grand Slam - basis of how the field was made up

It was played very early in the year and the 4 players invited were the major winners of the previous year. Now major wins was specifically mentioned as being the WCT Finals, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open (Australian wasn't regarded as a major by the Pepsi Grand Slam people). If they couldn't make up the 4 from the major winners of the previous year (say if like Borg in 1976 won the WCT finals and Wimbledon) then they looked to who won the Masters (not the Australian Open) to include an invitation too. Its very interesting that they rated the WCT finals over both the Masters and the Australian Open (in that order).

Have a look at

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1091998/index.htm

particularly the mention towards the end of the article as to how the players were selected.

It would be a passionating debate, which was bigger Dallas or Masters? I think, until the top players played every year the Masters, both events were the same value.

But, the cat that WCT was a straight out, five setter, gave it more credentials, I felt like that during the 70´s and 80´s.

In all, I´d give both events the same value.Certainly, more valuable than the Australian Open, although this was always a GS title.
