Any Federer Fans Not Too Upset?

Nice Thread. Maybe his twins kept him up last night. Good days, bad days. The serve alone could have won him the match had it been on. But I'm glad I don't have to feel sorry for him any more because I just laugh at myself sitting on my recliner with my low income life, playing on the beat up tennis courts in my neighborhood, then crying for a 100-Million dollar sports superstar when they lose. I guess, though, it's strange, it's like a way to get caught up in something outside one's self.

I'm happy for DP, and I'm not upset about Fed losing, because he's won so much already. However, the way Fed lost today was genuinely disappointing. I must say, I haven't seen such a sloppy match from him in a while.

I'm not too upset he lost; of course, I was into he match during it. You have to remember, at the end of the day, it is two guys you don't know hitting a fuzzy green ball over a net.

I'm more upset by the umpire's unprofessional behavior, making things up as he went along, not even attempting to control the crowd. There was a thread over on the other forum about this.

This isn't just something from this match. It is more common. While this umpire was one of the worst, many umpires aren't doing their jobs. Rules ought to be enforced. The challenge system needs to be abolished, and shot-spot seriously needs to be checked for accuracy -- real, publicly available data. If it is accurate, it ought to be used on every shot. It isn't the players job to make line calls.

Umpires ought not to give back 1st serves, let players say they weren't ready when they clearly were, etc. This guy just wasn't doing his job. And it is indicative of a much larger issue.

Hi, this is Captain Obvious speaking.

Federer had to lose in the U.S. Open one day. That day happened to be today. Still, it was not 2-2-2 - it was a dramatic 5-set battle.

I do like Del Potro. He is a big guy with a big heart. We desperately needed a new face in men's tennis, and we have finally got it. Welcome, Juan Martin!

This is also a new era. The serve-and-volley era ended with Sampras, and Federer was part of it. The baseline chasing & topspin hitting era ended with Nadal, and Federer was part of it. Watch the new era coming - huge guys with huge FLAT cannons (JMDP, Soderling). And The Immortal is still part of this one too.

totally agree. delPo was the player with more heart and focus today. Like a Gonzo with a better serve, better backhand.. and it really wasn't like Fed was playing that horribly like some people said. 1st set was masterclass and from the middle of 2nd set on delPotro seemed to genuinely believe he could pull an upset on the man who has beaten him 6 times to none. Always nice to see players who challenge dominance (at the same time, this is now a test to see if Federer will withstand such a challenge in years to come)

However, a new era of big FLAT hitters? never thought of that before, but it certainly is possible for delPo and Soderling to dominate the next few HC slams... but don't count Roger and Rafa out when it comes Clay and Grass season. To play masterfully on organic surfaces is an art

Sure I wanted Roger to win.. I didn't know much about DelPo, never paid much attention to him, though I was ok seeing him win vs. Nadal and ok tonight with Fed. Main reason being how gracious and appreciative he was for the moment; if someone is going to beat my favorites, it goes a long ways to see them so respectful for the sport and appreciative for their accomplishment. Glad he was able to speak in his own language, showed how much everything meant to him. I think on some level he wasn't able to connect the moment in English, that's why we see him break up a little in Spanish. Congratulations Delpo! :)

I'm pretty glad Fed lost to Delpo. Delpo seems like a nice guy and hopefully he can keep it up for the rest of his career.

I'm a pretty big fed fan, and I think I've just become a delpo fan. Those huge forehands were pretty fun to watch.

Ya, I'm kinda bummed that Fed didn't win, and disappointed that he didn't play anywhere near his best, but I was glad to see an exciting match. And there's really nothing I hate about Delpo. He seems like a nice guy and his game was fun to watch. In the end I had a good time watching the match, and for me that's enough to keep me happy. :)

Bingo. This was much more fun to watch than watching the same loop forehand to back hand. Do it repeatedly and wait for short reply. Then go for winner or pull off court and then go for winner. I mean Del Potro was absolutely smacking that damn forehand. I've never seen anything like it. Damn Gonzo's forehand. Give me Del Potro's!

i am glad federer lost the match because i just bought the federer fifteen shirt. i did not want it to become out of date so soon

I am not upset at all. Fed has had one of the best years in GS f
history. Look at it - he played 4 different players in each final. He has nothing left to prove.

I am really upset :-(

I went to sleep in the start of the 5th set only to realize Fed has pulled an AO 09 and collapsed again, WTF? Couldn't he at least make it competitive in the 5th? I don't get those sets.

Fed played a horrible match overall, and Delpo was on fire, especially the forehand. Fed just can't seem to win 6 in a row at anything, he tried at Wimbly and was stopped, also in a 5-setter. I'm happy for Delpo, he deserved it, he hit his strokes consistently, he didn't give up after the 3rd set and in the 4th where he was 2 points away from losing the match. He's shown a lot of mental strength, a lot of will power.

Only upset because Federer served poorly and that I'm going to have to read how Federer should retire everyday on the forums.

Federer played a lot better than in the Australian Final. The serve was bad but Federer is much more improved than in the 2009 early stages. If he had a regular service day he would have won but there has to be a day that the serve does not work, it was yesterday...

Del Potro hit some so powerful and penetrating shots, he deserved it because despite being twice back in the score he did not give up...

I'm a huge Federer fan, but for whatever reason, I'm not too upset about his loss today.

Of course, I would have loved if Federer kept all his streaks alive... 6 straight US Open titles... 41 straight US Open victories... chance to hold all four Slam titles concurrently... but alas, all great things must come to an end.

I think a few reasons that I'm not too upset:

- I like Del Potro more than Murray, Nadal or Djokovic
- Federer got his FO title this year
- Federer beat Sampras' all-time GS record this year
- There's still time for Federer to add more titles

The feeling for me is so different from when Federer lost to Nadal at the Australian Open... and I think Federer feels the same way as well. While he was overcome with emotion after the AO, he was totally calm and relaxed here. The AO was so much more important when he was still chasing Sampras, but now that he has gotten that out of the way, losing a slam here and there isn't that big of a deal.

Apparently both Nadal and Federer predicted Del Potro to be the next #1 player after them... not Murray or Djokovic... I guess they know what they're talking about.

I feel quite confident that Del Potro will win numerous slams in his career... but hopefully Federer will still win more before he's done!

I agree with every single statement you made here, Sir! I am not sad about Fed's loss. I like Del Potro a lot. He's classy, and I like his game. Not a pusher like Murray or Nadal.

That Cry baby got what he deserved. You can't crush the hopes and dreams of Roddick and sleep at night.....lol

I was there today(or yesterday) and it was awesome esp towards the end. ******* here (like I need to say that) but like del Potro as well and I was happy for JMDP to finally win the USO title. Just get the sense he is a very down to earth and nice guy. His game and movement belies his height.

Add me to the list of Fed fans who feel this way. It's awesome for the game of tennis to have another great rival who plays impressive hard court tennis. This is what we need to make Federer play his best :)

This is one of the most awesome match-ups out there right now.

I wouldnt be too upset if I was a Fed fan.. Obviously he is still more consistent at the slams than anyone out there right with Nadal injured.

Im sure Fed will rebound next year. Del Potro just played the slam of his career thus far.

Delpo is a good guy. Complaining about the cup on that serve was the only thing that annoyed me.

I'm a huge *******, but think Delpo absolutely deserved it.

That being said, I think this was one of the most poorly handled US Opens ever, and some people in the USTA need to resign or be fired. I'm from the US, but this tourney was shameful.

Yeah I'm not too bothered really. I'd rather have seen Federer win it, but he's had a good year anyway.

I, like many other Fed fans, have no problems with this result. Del Potro played with a lot of grit, determination and heart, and he totally deserved his win. Fed has had his share of triumphs this season, but last night he simply lost to a better player on the day. Most of the Fed fans I've spoken to can deal quite calmly with this loss, probably much to the Fedhaters chagrin, since this must surely take some of the joy out of their gloating. No doubt would they all feel better if we were on the brink of collective suicide.

Count me in, I was hoping Fed to win but I like Del Potro too. He was soo emotional after the match, it meant so much for him, like Fed after his first Wimbledon win. I admire Delpo for being so humble and respectful towards his opponents. Credit to him for staying so calm during this tournament and winning in his first GS final.

I kind of like Del Potro, he seems to have a real nice personality and I kind of expect him to do well in other tournaments as well. I don't mind Federer losing that much, just like I did not really mind that Safin won his match at the AO 2005. On the day they just played better. It is part of the game, Federer cannot win everything. The only real problem I had was with Federer not winning RG over the years, this because I though he deserved to win it at least once. But this is all history, the problem has been resolved. Every slam Federer wins is a bonus. Federer is past his prime but can still compete at the big stage and win these kinds of tournaments. I think Federer will be able to really compete for about 2 more years and I am confident he will still win a couple of slams.
In the end it a circle of tennis,
Borg had problems with Mcenroe
Becker had problems with Sampras
Sampras had problems with Hewitt/Safin
And now Federer will start to have problems against this new generation of tennis players.

Well, I was rooting for either Fed, Delpo or Djokovic to win it, so it's all ok. We all know this was bound to happend one day, winning 6 straight majors just doesn't seem right... Almost impossible! Federer alone said that no man is bigger than the game, well eventually the game catches up to you and you have to lose to those young guns firing on all cylinders. Of course, Fed still has majors left in him, so do the young players in the face of Delpo, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray maybe.

Lastly, how can anyone be upset after the guy won RG and Wimbledon this year? AND was in the finals of the last two tournaments. And broke one thousand records along the way.

I'm not a *******, but I'm a fan of Fed's awesomeness.

However, Del Potro had a great summer and yesterday wasn't too surprising. Seems like a nice guy...I would have been more upset if some other players had won.

I'm...............actually happy believe it or not. Yes I wanted federer to win but to see DP win his first before Murray definitely puts a smile on my face. Plus I don't mind federer losing now that he has the FO, career slam and number 15 under his belt. Anythign he wins from now onwards is just a bonus

Yep i'm not upset.
Fed can bounce back, like he always does. :)

And i'm really happy for JMDP! I hope this gives Murray a little kick up the behind. Get your arse into gear boy!

I'm not upset. Gotta love the way Delpo sharpened up as the match progressed. And he didn't choke on the big moment in the 5th. As for Fed.... Fed must be regretting those charity points and games he threw in the 2nd set. And his serve % was low throughout. He should have used a strategy of making the big guy cover more court side to side to exhaust him. And finally, Fed ran out of gas in the 5th cuz he is entering the twilight of his career.

I pretty much hated delpo after beating roddick in such close matches, but I'm getting used to teams/players I hate winning and doing really well (it is a sign they're really good it appears).

However, how can you really hate the big old tree?
I expected and predicted Fed to win, and to play Delpo at the finals. I do not like being wrong about the outcome...but.

Fed served like crap and I've never seen so many doubles from him before. It sucks that Fed lost the match the way he did - he HAD it, but, these things happen.

Fed had an amazing 09 and in the end, all of the pressure is off of him, still.

Tiger also lost a major this year, with someone else coming from behind and beating him.

No problem at all with DelPotro's victory - he was the better player and fully deserved it.

The only thing I am slightly 'upset' with was the atrocious job of the umpires in both the Djokovic-Federer and the final. Atrocious. They should have been kicked out of the chair immediately.

All this affection for Delpo by the Fedfans is really touching...but will you all feel the same when your boy starts losing to him on a regular basis?

If I can be a fan of both Federer and Nadal, I don't think I'll have a problem being a fan of Federer, Nadal, and Del Potro.

Why are you trying to start something? Fed has the career slam and the slam record...no shame in losing to an up and FAST rising star 8 years your jr.

I saw it coming..

AO-Destroyed
Madrid-Closer
FO-Very close

Next logical outcome would be to break through eventually right?

This is great for the game. Delpo's win will lift the standard of everyone else. Maybe this will be the blow that will motivate Fed to work on his net game and on his serve volley, or on his offensive return of serve.

Am not upset at all. I'm a huge fan of Federer, and delight in watching him play. The better player on the day won, and that's as it should be. And it was a nice long five-setter!

JMDP is a great guy, played really well and deserved it. He was gracious and he was just so happy (as was the massive Argentine contingent in the stadium) it was infectious. I had somehow not seen him play before the quarters, but I'm definitely now a fan of DelPo also, after the semis and finals. I see a future #1.

I had only two real grouses about the match: The umpiring and the presentation. Both need some serious reconsideration.

I won't care, Del Potro was my #3 guy to begin with (after Fed and Bagy) so no complaints if he starts posting some wins over RFed :)
