Hey Noelle, I was watching Philippine news tonight. The arroyas scandle keeps getting more interesting. Anyways, Philippines won 22 gold medals (so far ahead of everyone) in the South Asian Games.

I saw some tennis players there, hahaha one guy looked kinda chubby. I want to go back to Philippines so I can play tennis there nationally haha. I seriously want to go to the Philippines, I wouldn't mind going college there while I prepare for the 2008 olympics and those south east asian games and such :p.

Perfect weather to play also. Where I lived (Pampanga province, San Fernando) it was always pretty hot. Atleast 80-100+ degrees all year around. Instead of this crappy Washington weather of 20-40 degrees in the winter and 60-65 degrees in the summer.

Unfortunately I am all alone and I don't have anyone to come with me to watch the singles. (Plus I haven't been to Rizal Memorial Tennis Center ever...) But I will try to go! This is kind of a once-in-a-lifetime deal. :D

I'm pretty sure my university would like to recruit people like you... ;)

But in the interest of actually growing Filipino playing professionals I think they should be training outside the Philippines. I mean, Andy Murray left the UK to go to train in Spain because he says the tennis training wasn't tough enough in the UK. Our homegrown boys got spanked in the dead doubles rubber versus Indonesia, for Pete's sake.

:) I just watched Eric Taino defeat an Indonesian player on the way to the semifinal. Taino just overpowered the poor guy 6-1,6-0. :)

Alas, I only saw it on TV. :(

Nice! Don't really see him overpower anybody. I saw a challenger where he played doubles with this guy who played exactly like hewitt! Same motions and everything it was freaky. Yah I know power isn't really in doubles but the guys he was playing against were just smacking the cr@p out of the ball.

The Goodwill Tennis Tours

My name is Elmer A. Dolera from Salinas,California in the United States and the founder of The Goodwill Tennis Tours, a philanthropic program of free world-class tennis instruction for the people of the Philippines. Since November of 1999, my tennis program has been to the Philippines four times and we gave tennis instruction to hundreds of Filipinos. I am presently organizing my fifth tennis program for April/May 2006. This is an opportune time because the children and students will be on their summer vacation.

I am requesting the help of this forum to acquire sponsorship for our airfare. If any of you know of companies, organizations and/or individuals in the Philippines I can contact, please let me know. Sponsorship is for our airfare only because we have sponsored accommodations in Alabang/Muntinlupa City, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo City and Cebu City. We will be at each location for one week and if we can stay an additional fifth week, we will go to one more location. The tennis professionals and myself are volunteering our time and expertise to the people of the Philippines and thanks to Wilson Sporting Goods, will again provide the tennis supplies such as balls and tennis rackets to implement the tennis program.

My request for sponsorship is minimal considering our sponsors will receive positive promotion in the three major regions of the Philippines - Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao, that we are volunteering our time and expertise, that we are supplying the tennis supplies to implement the tennis program and that we have sponsored accommodations.

The Goodwill Tennis Tours will be bringing the internationally recognized tennis programs of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) to the Philippines. The Philippines depends much on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) to receive on going tennis education, especially for tennis trainers, but the reality is that these tennis programs often bypass the Philippines. Both the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) did not do any tennis programs in the Philippines in 2004 and will not be doing tennis programs in the Philippines in 2005 and 2006. As far as the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) is concerned, if you go to their website and their Workshops and Conferences link, their last update was for 2001. The result is a stagnation of the growth of tennis trainers (certified or not) in the Philippines and the dissemination of the most modern techniques in tennis instruction. Since November of 1999, we have been the Philippines on a regular basis and have gone to locations often neglected by the aforementioned tennis organizations.

For my April/May 2006 Philippine tennis program, we will continue the work we began in 2004 to teach people how to teach tennis by doing the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Recreational Coaches Workshop (www.nrpa.org/content/default.aspx?documentId=1714). The USTA Recreational Coaches Workshop is endorsed by the USPTA, PTR and the U.S. National Recreation and Park Association and is designed for tennis instructors, high school and college players, physical education teachers, parents who want to teach to their children, seniors who want to teach to others, in essence all those who want to teach tennis to children up to intermediate players, using methods to create a positive experience for those with their initial contact with a tennis instructor so that they will continue playing the game of tennis. In addition, we will be doing tennis clinics for children, beginners and advanced players, especially juniors.

The Goodwill Tennis Tours has the highest qualified tennis professionals teaching tennis. For my Philippines tennis program, my associate United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) and Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) certified Pro 1 tennis professional Ted Sayrahder will accompany me along with USPTA Pro 1 Kevin Young. Ted Sayrahder is also a USPTA Tester and is qualified to certify those who want to become certified USPTA tennis professionals. He is also a USTA High Performance Coach (http://www.highperformance.usta.com/content/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=112842&itype=7417&icategoryid=615). Please go to the web address http://www.parkrecord.com/Stories/0,1413,122%7E8144%7E3018909,00.html to read an article about the particular USTA High Performance training session he participated in. One of the instructors for that program, Mr. Bobby Bernstein, was Andy Roddick's coach during his developmental years. In the picture accompanying the article, my associate Ted Sayrahder, is seated in the front row to the far left wearing blue. Ted Sayrahder was USPTA Pro of the Year and USPTA Tester of the Year for the Pacific Northwest Division in 2003.

USPTA Pro 1 Kevin Young until recently was a vice-president of the USPTA Pacific Northwest Division and a member of the National USPTA National Executive Committee and is currently working towards his USPTA Master Professional Certification. In 1997 he was awarded USPTA Pro of the Year for the Pacific Northwest Division and participated as a tennis instructor for Arthur Ashe Kids Day at the just concluded 2005 U.S. Open. In addition, Kevin Young has been awarded the following:

USPTA/USTA Partnership Award in 1997 for the Pacific Northwest Division
Received the USPTA's National Industry Excellence Award at the National USPTA convention in 1998 for outstanding USA Tennis community programming in our area.
In 2000, was one of 4 USA Tennis Community Coordinators in the Nation that received the USTA Community Recognition Award from USTA National; and awarded a trip to the 2000 US Open in NY.
His facility, the Vancouver Tennis & Racquetball Center was named the USTA/PNW Organization of the Year in 2000.
His organization received the "Outstanding Adult Tournament Event of the Year" in 2002 for our NTRP Grand Slam tournament series.
USPTA/Pacific Northwest Facility Manager of the year in 2002 and 2004.

Both Ted Sayrahder and Kevin Young are also United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Trainers for the USTA Recreational Coaches Workshop. We encourage all the aforementioned groups to attend the USTA Recreational Coaches Workshop so they can go to the grassroots and teach the great game of tennis. All are welcome to participate. In 2004, we certified thirty-seven Filipinos as USPTA Developmental Coaches. My tennis program is evergreen because of the yearning of the Philippines for world-class tennis instruction. We can continue on an annual basis the aforementioned programs and certify those who desire to become certified in the higher levels of USPTA tennis certification - Pro 3, Pro 2 and Pro 1, in addition to teaching to children and advanced juniors.

I am trying to reconnect with Cagayan de Oro to reconfirm our sponsored accommodations. My contact, an Attorney Tiburcio Palasan, his email address does not work. If any of you know him or know of anyone I can contact in Cagayan de Oro to organize a tennis progam for that city, please let me know. I am also interested in Davao City as a site for one of my tennis clinics. If any of you know of contacts at this city, also please let me know.

The Goodwill Tennis Tours has a proven track record of success and will be a powerful instrument to promote our sponsors throughout the Philippines. For more information please go to the web addresses http://edolera.photosite.com/ and http://photos.yahoo.com/edolera@sbcglobal.net to view pictures and read articles about my last four tennis programs in the Philippines. They are mute testimony to my committment to strengthen Philippine tennis and my affection and respect for my ancestral homeland. I enthusiastically look forward hearing from you and ready to answer all your questions.

Promoting friendship and goodwill using the world game of tennis,

Noelle, what's your University? I'd like to drop by and play tennis with the Universities team.

I'm going to be heading to Pampanga during the summer, or before the summer depending how things go.

I go to the University of the Philippines, but I'm not with the team. I'm just a huge fan of the game, that's all. :)

By the way, yesterday Mamiit won the men's singles gold medal for the Philippines at the South East Asian Games. :) He and Eric Taino will compete together for the men's doubles gold today.

Oh wow, I was actually thinking of going to University of Philippines when I was choosing colleges. Too bad my tagalog speaking sucks, good thing I can understand it though.

I think the complaints were about their citizenship. The Fil-Americans were the ones who pulled in the gold medals (Taino and mixed doubles partner Riza Zalameda won the gold today against the Indonesians) but they have US citizenship. I think they're allowed to represent the Philippines, though, since Philippine citizenship is de facto granted on the basis of blood rather than birthplace.

I can't believe I didn't post in this thread, a filipina over here too and residing in Las Piñas. Before I do any more posting in this thread I have to read from the beginning. :)

Hi! :D

Eric Taino and Riza Zalameda won the mixed doubles gold medal yesterday, so that makes it three gold medals for Team Philippines tennis at the South East Asian Games.

Interestingly, it was the Fil-Americans who did the work for the gold medal. Taino and Mamiit never lost their matches in the team event which meant the doubles matches were no-bearing (dead rubbers in Davis Cup speak). Zalameda is listed on the ITF website with USA appended to her name.

Hopefully the exposure the SEA Games gold medals got for tennis in the Philippines will encourage more people to take up the sport in the archipelago, and we might actually be able to grow some good players in the coming years. Denise Dy, Johnny Arcilla, and PJ Tierro are good homegrown players displaying all-court skill, but not quite up to snuff yet.

Noelle...

Isn't Denise Dy from CA, specifically, around the San Jose area? How about Czarina Arevalo?

What is the status of Kyle Dandan? I had heard he trained with the ITF European program over the summer...

Noelle

Denise Dy has (PHI) appended to her name on the ITF site. So I assumed she was homegrown, but yeah, I was wrong (and I had only just recently read an article about her and Zalameda being Fil-Ams, too :| ).
http://www.itftennis.com/womens/players/player.asp?player=100052171

The ITF website doesn't have her birthplace or residence listed, hence my mistake.

As for the other two players, I haven't heard a peep about them. But then again the media here are like British media during Wimbledon. They only write about tennis when there's something big (like the SEA Games) but don't really keep abreast of Philippine players' statuses otherwise.

Noelle

I didn't see Anja-Vanessa's name in any of the entry lists, so she didn't play, I guess.

Zalameda and Dy won the bronze medal in the women's doubles, by the way, and the RP women's team won the bronze as well.

Yeah, I saw some of the playing on the Philippines news with my mom. I was really excited to see some of them playing. I want to be in their shoes ;), that would be sweet.

Did Paradorn Srichiphan play for Thailand, I never heard anything about it just the Filipinos heh?

On another note, I was really impressed with the water/sea events.

Michael Molina is my hero. :)

Paradorn was in Thailand; I think he was serving his time as a monk through last week, since he underwent the ceremony to become a monk on the weekend before the SEA Games.

Philippine Tennis

Just a brief history of Philippine Tennis. There used to be a group of guys that did well for the Phil. Home grown talent.

Manny Tolentino (Former no.1 in the world ITF)
Andres Battad
Felix Barrientos
Nilo Natividad
Ringo Navarosa
Roland So

Money is a big issue since they earn Peso and spend dollar. Unlike the US and Europe or South America. It is possible to travel by land. Fil-Am should work together to help our talented players in the Island.

Eric and Cecil

They played davis Cup last weekend i n Manila Polo Club and won the Asia Pacific Zonal Group III ties. That makes them qualified for group II coming 2007 and hopefully in the Group I and world group play-oofs come 2008. Nice to see Eric and Cecil playing as Filipinos this time.
