Who fits this description? Both men's & women's games... who comes to mind? By saying they're pathetic, I'm saying they are horrible, relatively speaking, to the rest of their game and relative to other players' volleys at the top of the game.

Or does nobody fit this description? I'm curious if people think good volleys are unnecessary to being a top ATP player today.

andy Roddick has got a PATHETIC NET GAME.
His 100 square inch super oversized racket as well as being a 28 inches long is a killer at the net.

I'm going to respectfully disagree with Davy and Roddick.

Andy's APPROACH GAME is easily the worst in the top 20, maybe top 30, but if he gets to net appropriately he can put away a volley as good as anyone in the top 10.

Davy never goes to net but when he does he's got nice touch, check out his doubles match against the Bryan's in Davis Cup or any match during his Miami run.

Verdasco when playing singles has below average volleys, when playing doubles he is much better.

Anyone thats in the top ten has solid enough volleys to get there. None that are over the line PATHETIC if you know what I mean.

Haha funny. For a baseliner Agassi's net skills were considered amazing.

Dunno about that... Agassi had enough confidence in his volleying abilities to throw in the odd serve volley when he was break point down. Maybe it was effective because his opponents were shellshocked to see him at the net!

    Definitely better than Roddick.

Davy has awesome touch around the net... unorthodox, not very pretty, but he has decent volleys.

Enqvist was terrible at the net, maybe he couldn't move his oversized head quickly enough at the net!

Roddick's net game isn't THAT bad, it's just that his approach shots aren't good so he gets passed all the time. Davydenko though I would sort of agree on.

Roddick's volleys are not terrible, but certainly the worst one in the top 10.

you can not be serious? many many players volley far worse than Roddick.

as many have said, Roddick's net game isn't that bad. in fact (especially in Doha) it's fairly good. his approach/transition game is easily the worst I've ever seen though, which results in him looking quite foolish at net.

You guys have never seen anyone outside the top 10 play if you say Roddick. But in a contradictory bit, I say FERRER... way way WAY worse than Roddick!

Roddicks volleys are not bad. Nothing about his game is honestly bad. How long has the dude been in the top 10 now?

"Baddest" volleys (baddest as in "he was the baddest mother that ever lived") definitely belong to Stepanek.

Worst? Pathetic? Eeeeehhhh... honestly can't decide.

the problem with "bad" volleyers like roddick and blake and berdych is that they pick bad times to volley and bad shots to approach on. nadal's volleys aren't any better than roddicks but he only approaches when he has an easy putaway. blake just hits any old forehand and charges the net and hopes for the best. you can't just hit a normal forehand to someone's stronger side and start running for the net and not expect to get passed, or have to make an impossible volley.

Is it fair to say that most if not all of the people mentioned can do so well because they don't really need volleys in today's game?

Agree with the roddick comment that his approaches are bad...he also just
doesn't have the fast hands/talent that someone like federer has.

I would love to see some players like Simon/Davydenko/Ferrer/nadal be
Forced to come to the net. in the late 70's that was one idea put forward after women's tennis with 20/30 stroke points.....if the rally went beyond
say 15 strokes, the server lost the point.

There are far worse volleyers than roddick, but roddick has to try and volley
because he struggles movement wise. If he just "hangs" with players his defensive game is easily struggling.

My vote is for Nikolay Davydenko, justin gimelstob while commentating his matches on ttc, criticized him saying "he's got hands of stone"

All the pros have relatively horrible volleys compared to the past. Bryan brothers even said Navratilova has better volleys then any of the pros.

    Roddick.

No court sense whatsoever once he's south of the service line. And his volleys are funny bad.

No doubt. When he played Nadal last year in Davis Cup, he was hardly aggressive at net.
