Anybody still using a "Classic" racket (1990s and earlier) as their main racket?

What, not a big David Pate fan? :-D

I liked watching Mandlikova with the Ultra 2, but my personal mid-80’s crush was on another Ultra 2 mid user, Claudia Kohde-Kilsch.

Back then, 97-98, the pics show a 660cm2/102" head, 28" long. When Head racquets were flexy
It sure doesn't play like it's a full inch longer, I'll measure and report back.

It'll be for sale soon, thinning my herd since I hardly have time to play anymore.

You're right, it's a full inch longer than standard. I never notice it when playing though.

I'm unloading a bunch of frames, classic and newer (including this Head) - hit me up for info.

I joined the club, unloading racquets that are rarely, once a decade, used now. Starting w/pr. PS 6.0 85.

I've tried more modern racquets such as Prince Tour 98, Wilson Six One 95, but I keep going back to my 1988 Prince CTS Graduate 90, now strung with Prince XC 16 gauge at 60 lbs. Plays better than ever!

Just looked that racket up and it's apparently still available. It weighs 400g!? How does it hit?
It has tons of power, so much plow through, very stable, and very comfortable with synthetic gut string. Half volleys from the baseline frequently goes deep to opponent's baseline. Very easy power on the serves. My groundstrokes are a bit like John McEnroe's and Kimiko Date, but my serve is different.... I like to hit more flat serves.

Volleys are so stable with it... So much power and very predictable and controllable.

It has great touch too... With a lot of feel. I like the classic box beam. I have no troubles at all hitting dropshots and topspin lobs... When I do topspin lob my forehand grip changes to semi western.. when I flatten my forehand I use eastern grip, but when I want defensive topspin forehand I use semi western grip.

My shots are consistently going deep with this racquet. My serve and my volleys improve a lot with it.... I think it's due to the easy power it gives.

I replaced the original grip with Fairway leather grip because I like leather grip.

Kinda like the medium weight racquets of the late 80s. 14+ oz MAX200G and others

That XRC was like an Austral....TINY !!! I never did warm up to that one, even though the rep REALLY wanted me to switch to it.

Not my primary racquet, but I just picked up an old sparkly red, non cap, Prestige Tour MP from the mid 90's. I used this for a couple months in college (but they were too fragile for my temper), and I forgot just how smooth that racquet plays. It's been a fun hit on court with my lessons the last couple of days...

102" Head? Best sweetspot ever!

I don't think its the 102... It lines up almost perfectly with my Extreme Tour which is a 98. But I know that Head was a little wonky with how they measured headsizes back in the day!
Never saw a Prestige Tour or Classic with a 630 cm2 head. That would be Money

If you're talking about the burgundy color Prestige Tour MP, it's 102si. At least it's what they say.. or 690 cm2.

Head changed how they measured the size.102 sq. in. was the outer edge of the hoop. 99 sq in. was on the inside of the hoop. to bring Head inline with all the other manufacturers. It's still my favorite frame.

Prince TC55A-93 Pro Stock version with lead plugs in the handle.
Same racquet came in various paint jobs: Precision Retro, Triple Threat Rebel 95, Diablo Tour. Capriati and Malisse used the same frames with various paint jobs. Mine are all black now.

I held a real and signed Capriati's TT in my hands. Nice.

Let me refine and reiterate the thread- anybody using rackets from the 1980s as their one main racket and not for an occasional hit?

Up until about 3yrs ago my every day, go-to, match racquet was the Pro Staff 6.0 95. Nothing felt better and it's still what I judge anything else I play with against. Following an arm injury I switched to the DR98 and it's beautiful. A worthy successor, but I still hanker for the 6.0.
I even played a seniors county match with one a couple of months ago. It was only a friendly so the result didn't matter, and I used my Pro Staff. It felt just like putting on an old pair of slippers, super comfy and familiar from the first stroke. Unfortunately, it felt too good and i found myself going for bigger & bigger serves (because I could & the racquet let me), but with great power comes great pain, and my back decided enough was enough. The Pro Staff complimented me, made me feel young & invincible again, to the point where I was doing things that I knew I could, but that I physically shouldn't.
I will keep her in the bag, but she will be an occasional dalliance, to be rediscovered when wanting a bit of flirtatious memory. Day to day, nearing the age of 50 and various body parts all competing for Most Painful, the DR will be the first to be reached for . . . .

Just missed, I believe my Head Premier Tours were 2000 or so, maybe. That twin Tube design is either too flexy and instable (as some say), or of a controlled flex that really holds and allows good pop and dwell time when strung right (mid low tension and dynamic string, think TGV). Superb feel and dynamic pop for a linear games - very special. As I said before, sorta like a PT 630 for slower swings...

Recently I found 2 old rackets, one in my basement, the other one in my brother's house
I am stringing a Babolat Soft Drive, because I remembered it was the one Carlos Moya used, even if with very weird specs, so, I know at least it was good a enough for a brief number 1 player.

The other one is a Dunlop Black Max that should have belonged to my father. Should I string it? I think no top 100 tennis player ever used it, it's not like the Dunlop of McEnroe and Steffi

Black Max pre-dated the Injection Molded Dunlops. May be wrong
