Anyone hit both 1H and 2H BH?

Thiem who normally hits 1 handed hits this passing shot 2 handed! Even on the pro level it has been done.

It's not just muscle memory reps ... it's clarity during points. I played with a guy that hit both 1hbh and 2hbh that were both 5.0 quality. He didn't seem to have much problem with technique mixing them in, but the "when" for each. He could hit quality topspin drives with both ... so both were always valid during a point. I think what he lost is that autopilot mode you need when playing your best tennis.

Since I am way past any competition that matters to me, I have the luxury of hitting what is most fun/satisfying. I have kept the flat 1hbh dtl (when in perfect strike zone) ... and 2hbh for everything else (that isn't a 1hbh slice or drop shot). That can be pretty autopilot ... only hit 1hbh when all the stars align. :-D

I'm like you. When I want to take a big cut or put a lot of spin on the ball and it is in my comfort zone then I'll take a rip at the 1 hander. Otherwise, I'll choose the 2 hander. It's not super confusing that way and I'm not getting any better than 4.5 anyways.

I hit the 1hbh for 40 years, and 2hbh now 3+ ... so there is that. In my singles tournaments my flat 1hbh dtl, including passing shot was "my shot", so hard to give it up. But I hit a flat 1hbh ... and a lot of slice (was s&v). I can already hit more topspin and more pace with my 2hbh than I ever did with the 1hbh. Based on a lot of posts here ... that seems opposite than most. That makes it easy to bag the 1hbh other than the flat dtl ... and even there am hitting pretty good flat 2hbh dtl. Actually has added some thought on bh dtl. With 1hbh it was flat or ... flat. Now with 2hbh dtl I have the option for ts ... but creature of habit, I am programmed to hit all bh dtl flat.

I have always hit 1hbh with continental. I have found lately that I can hit a decent ts 1hbh with eastern. My 11.5ish racquet is heavier than those 10 oz racquets I always played with, and really seems to help with 1hbh drive. BUT!!! way too many hours invested in 2hbh last 3 years ... there will not be a 1hbh ts project.

We hit it way differently. I use a southwest grip and hit with heavy topspin on the 1 hander to generate angles or can hit a powerful flat shot. The problem is I need it close to that ideal height and distance from my body. The 2 hander allows me to hit balls that are not at that perfect height back and wait for a better ball.

Conti 1HBH will definitely have it's limitations in terms of spin potential unless you can generate a ton of RHS to make up for the grip. Eastern backhand grip is where it's at on the aggressive modern 1 hander. I think i've hit 1 handers harder than my very hard and spinny forehand.

My buddy bought one of those portable radar guns from Amazon and we played around with it on serves and groundies. I hit a couple 1 handers right at 80 MPH and forehands around the same. Serve was in the mid to low 90s. 1hbh for the win. lol.

tsonga 1hbh (normally hits 2hbh)
I guess I wasn't seeing things after all with JWT. A few years ago I saw him hit one handed and was shocked but then I didn't see it again. The video shows he actually uses it quite a bit. He's a big strong guy and he can utilize the extra reach when he is pulled out of position.

I always though his 2 handed BH looked a little cramped and restrictive...not very flowing. I wonder if he will eventually ditch it completely and play 1 handed exclusively.
