Anyone still use/collect wooden racquets? If so, please read.

So I acquired a wooden racquet collection (60 or so frames from the 70's & and really early 80's) from an old tennis pro because there were a handful of specific ones I really wanted. The caveat was for me to take the entire collection for the deal to take place. In this collection are the usual Kramer Staffs, Maxply Forts as well as other wilsons, dunlops, spaldings, Bancrofts, Slazengers, Snauwaerts, and even some fiber sandwiches as a Kawasaki and some other one Yonex (?). There are also 2 Ashe Comps and a few T2000 and lookalikes.

All have been played with, and are still playable. There was 1 in the collection that was severely warped so I threw that one out.

The easiest thing would be for me to do would to simply donate all of them but I'd thought I would offer them up to someone here. I realize that they're not worth a lot money, but the may be of some use to those who still hit with wooden racquets now and again (or maybe you collect them).

**This is not a "For Sale or Trade" offer** I am giving these to you. I will also pay for UPS Ground shipping to anywhere in the 48 US states (for 4 large boxes). If you live in the greater Los Angeles and Orange County area, I am willing to meetup with you to hand deliver these. Just pm me as to what you are plan on doing with them (ie hit with them, collect them, or have a wooden racquet tourney).

Also, please feel free to post anything that may be of use to anyone reading this post.

It there is no interest, then I will simply donate them.

TIA

Darn. I still like playing with the Wilson Jack Kramer Pro Staffs, but not in LA at the moment. Won't be back until either Dec or more likely some time next year.

The batch sounds like it would be perfect for running a wood racquet tournament. I was going to try to do one in LA a few years ago, but got too busy, and then I moved.

Will try to do one next year in Asia.

If you're in any of the 48 US States, I am willing to ship them to you. I'll pay for the cost for UPS Ground Shipping. If you're going to use it for a woodie tourney, I'll even throw in a Prince Woodie, and a Head Vilas. Heck, I may even pull the Golden Ace off auction and include that as well.

This would be perfect for you :)

Thank you for the kind offer. Unfortunately, I am not currently in the U.S.

Ah, the Prince Woodie. I remember trying that racquet once, years ago. I was surprised how well it played compared to a graphite racquet. Never tried a Head Vilas before. Of the ones I've tried, I like the Wilson JK Pro Staff the most.

Just strung up a 100+ year old wood racquet I bought, with gut but haven't had a chance to play with it yet. 17g VS Gut at something like 30 lbs.

LOL, well done sir.. not easy hitting top spins with the Kramer wood. The read was well worth the 20 min investment at work. I thought I would see some SV tactics though.. a la McEnroe in there somewhere.

I actually S&V almost exclusively in doubles and a good amount in singles with my graphite racquet but didn't that day.

Very nice, great half volley technique as well. I like attacking the T's on the first serves and throwing a wide slice out to the baseline on the deuce side to spread it out (appears you do that as well). Throw in an occasional hard flat one or a high kick to the baseline on the ad side to mix it up.

Great to see players using serve & volleys these days. Been following your traveling Radical posts.. may get in on that someday.

If you have Bancroft Borg, Maxply Fort, J.Kramer PS and will be so kind to ship to Wilmington, DE, please reply.

Sorry, the Bancroft is a Borg Bamboo, not his player model.

Let me do this, since the 60 or so frames maybe a little overwhelming.. I may need to piecemeal them. I will post pics of them over the weekend so let me know what you guys want.. this is going to take a while.

@BorgCash pm me your addy (the kramer is an auto and not PS, is that ok?). I'll get it over to you.

Wow, that is some collection of wood racquets. I still have a couple of Jack Kramer Autographs, but rarely hit with them. The Dunlop Maxply Fort was my first wood racquet, and the only racquet I ever broke. If you still have them, and are willing to parcel out one Dunlop Maxply Fort, I am in OC and willing to work out a pick up.

I don’t need more wood racquets, but it really pleases me that one of our colleagues here has made such a generous offer!

Well done, @Ultra 2 - it’s such a pleasure to have people like you enjoying this wacky hobby with us!

Very cool, this generous offer!
I wish I could take some of those sticks, but Switzerland is not really reachable by UPS ground
We organized a classic racket tournament in our club last year and this year again. I was dragging around 60 sticks or so to the club, some wood, but many early graphite’s and some metal sticks. Fun stuff and I am always on the lookout for more woodies!
Nice to know those sticks stay available in the community for collection, fun hits or classic tourneys

Hey Frinton,

If it cost me some $$$ to send these out to you, I would. Let me know if you want them. Don't need the money, just want to know they are not being thrown away.

Have a nice older Prince, Kennex, Wilson graphite collection I can send along as well. There is no need for these to just hang on a stand.

1. how many of the racquets need to be restrung or reconditioned? I'm trying to estimate time needed
2. how soon are you trying to ship these?

I've only gotten to hit with a wood racquet one time and have been trying to find one. If the prince is still available I'd love it, but really any of them would be a treat! I'm in north county San Diego but see family in the LA area pretty regularly so would be happy to meet up so you don't have to ship.

This is so cool and incredibly generous of you, thank you!!

What grips sizes do you have? Any 4 5/8's or 4 3/4's?

@Ultra 2
Thank you for your generosity in shipping out the racquets.
You get two thumbs up from me.
1) Echo thumb for encouraging reusing of a product
2) helping to preserve antique wood racquets and tennis history.

Hey @Ultra2 ,
Thanks a lot for the offer. Hey got busy and thought anyway, you’d find takers easily in places where shipping to doesn’t cost a fortune. I think what you did is really generous and should be a lesson to some of the racket Flippers who always want to make a buck on a nice racket. At least they also help keep Classic rackets in good hands.
Maybe all who have received rackets from Ultra 2 could post some pics for us all to admire? Thanks

So , after a long and nasty week, popped into my office yesterday to find the best care package EVER waiting -- thanks a million!!! I usually root for karma to take care of the bad guys-- this time, man, someone deserves to hit Powerball or get a foot massage from Scarlett Johansson or the like.

I can't figure out how to post a picture on here, but my new Prince Woodie is awesome! Can't wait to get it all strung up and on the court

I remember enjoying playing with my tennis camp instructer's old wooden racquet back in high school. If u do give out anymore in the future i would love to get my hands on one. Just got a stringer recently and would love to try stringing one.:)

Good to see classic woods going to TW classic posters. I know many still love and use woods as I hear about woody events every year. I love playing woods that still have vintage gut in good condition. Any such rackets are a pleasure to hit with if you enjoy touch and feel especially playing SV allcourt tennis.
