Over the weekend I was playing mixed doubles, it was pretty hot and as we went to a third set tiebreaker I started to feel a little tired. My partner pulled out a tube of zipfill energy drink and handed it to me. I had never tried it before, but gulped it down and it definitely gave me a lift, as we went on to win the TB. Curious to know if anyone else uses this stuff ? http://www.zipfizz.com/

^^I'm actor Troy McClure. You might remember me from such TV series as "Buck Henderson, Union Buster" and "Troy and Company's Summertime Smile Factory". Today I'm here to tell you about "Zipfizz.", the 21st century energy drink. Let's meet the inventor, Dr. Nick Riviera.

I bought it today at Target for the fun of it and tried it out. I ate dinner (about 500 calories) and took a zipfizz.

I was beat and out of energy in 3 hrs of tennis (about 1500 calories worth according to my heart rate monitor, if that helps). So I probably will not be buying any more after this... I feel better and have more energy drinking gatorade-type drinks (carbs + electrolytes) during matches than 1 zipfizz beforehand.

WHAT’S IN IT?
Zipfizz contains 25 nutritional ingredients:
9 VITAMINS: vitamins C, E, all the Bs, and folate
8 MINERALS: potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, selenium, manganese, chromium, sodium
ELECTROLYTES: magnesium, potassium
AMINO ACIDS: arginine, taurine
ANTIOXIDANTS: green tea extract, vitamins C and E
THE 4 G’S: Grape seed extract, Ginger, Green tea and Ginseng

DOES IT HAVE CAFFEINE?
Yes. It has 100 mgs of caffeine from natural sources of green tea and Guarana. That’s
about one-fourth the caffeine in a Tall Starbucks coffee (375 mg) and less than two
Excedrin tablets (130 mg).

HOW IS IT SWEETENED?
Zipfizz contains no sugar. With only 10 calories, it is sweetened with Xylitol (pronounced
“Zy-le-tall”) and Sucralose. Xylitol is a naturally occurring, low-calorie sugar substitute
found in berries, fruits and birch bark. Many dentists recommend chewing Xylitol gum for
good dental health. The average person produces 6-10 grams a day of Xylitol, it is a by-
product of sugar metabolism.

Reading this, it's hard to see any value for tennis players during or pre/post match.

I'm always a bit suspicious when a product lists all the wonderful stuff that it contains but avoids telling you how much of each it contains. Does the website list amounts somewhere? I saw some clues for the amount of B12, vit C, vit E, caffeine and minerals (Na, Mg, K). However, I could not find amounts on the other ingredients.

Also found it curious that the comparison chart for their Energy Shot product only compared it to conventional energy drinks. It would seem that a proper comparison would include other energy shot products such as 5-hour Energy or Redline.

The amino acids, arginine & taurine, would probably be much more effective on a relatively empty stomach rather than taken after a meal that contains other protein. You may have sabotaged the effectiveness of those particular constituents. If you are going to eat protein, do so a couple of hours before ingesting the the product.
