AO 2013 3rd round: Almagro - Janowicz

Janowicz has become one of the serious dark horses.

That's my dandy of a match for this round.

Both swinging freely and having considerable touch. Almagro usually beating those under him in the rankings, but prone to mental collapse.
Janowicz showing yesterday he can become crazy at times, in an ugly scene in the 1st.

Who will take it?

An interesting one. Really can't stomach Almagro off clay. Actually I can't really stomach Almagro on any surface, he's a bit pedestrian.

So my heart says Jano, as I'd love him to win. But my head says Almagro has too much experience. Nico in 4.

Could be close. I'd still say gamewise it should be Almagro at this point. However, I think the belief and the incentive for Janowicz maybe greater. Certainly one of the best matches of day 5.

If Almagro finally started to really work to be good off clay, I don't see why he could not make the quarters or something here. He's with Tipsy.

almagro in 3 anything else is an upset

Disagree. Almagro might've had a good year, but he's never made the final of a hard court event. All his finals have been clay. He's a clay player.

This one is much closer than the numbers suggest.

Janowicz has got the game to win, but he's a bit too erratic atm.

Almagro in 4, unless Paris JJ shows up.

considering Almagro played a three setter 2nd round match, is much more experienced and in good form right now, the odds are in his favour. Having said that, I want Jerzy to go deep into the business end of the tournament, hence voted for him :)

I find Almagro fun to watch. That backhand, the explosive power. On the other hand, he does experience mental lapses all too often. And he is a clay court specialist.

Janowicz can go from riches to rags one week, and rags to riches the next. "He is too unstable." That's been said before. But lets be honest, hearing that gets old real fast. Meanwhile, from what I have seen so far, Janowicz has virtually unlimited upside potential. Holy sh*t.

It's a long way to the top (If you wanna rock 'n' roll).

Jerzey needs to cut down on the drop shot - no more than 2 or 3 per set. Jerzey needs to keep coming in or Nic will grind him up. Jerzey in 4.

Could be a great match.

Jerzy looks comfortable at the net, I like that.

About the drop shot, I've been thinking about that. He seems to be more crafty with it than most players, as he showed in Bercy. The mixups were refreshing, you never know what you're going to get. But that's not what I've been thinking about. In long matches, he is going to wear players out with it, because he has proven that he can be consistently good with it. For his oppponents, over and over, it's the thought of: "F**k, I have to run after that again?"

It's predictable and unpredictable at the same time. Quite possibly in Jerzy's favor, for now ...

BTW, I like how people misspell and misprounce his name, as in the East Coast state. As does Tiilikainen apparently. I guess he is stuck with it for now. Even Navratilova calls him Jersey on air, and she knows better.

Big Steve Johnson, with less game than JJ, gave Nico a huge scare in R1. I like JJ to get through in another tight one...four sets with at least one TB.

Almagro will take it in 4. The experience will give him the edge. I have to vote for him anyway as he is a one-handed backhander. It's a rule of mine.

I disagree that Janowicz needs to tone down the drop shots. They are super effective against grinders (most of the tour) and will be a strength against Almagro as it keeps opponents on edge; they're no longer comfortable at the baseline. i know most of you guys are pushers, but that's not Jerzy's style.

Tough match. Janowicz has an advantage in this match because he plays fast and hits the ball incredibly hard. Almagro likes to have time to set up and hit his shots. He won't have that time against Janowicz.

If anyone does successfully pick this match, they should go buy a lottery ticket. It could go any of a million ways. JJ is a ticking time bomb. He could come out and blow Nico off the court with his serve and FH - or melt down and look like a 4.5 having a bad day. Or he could go back and forth many times in the match.

Almagro in 4. Who knows?

I think the dropshot is effective too, especially since he is such a big hitter. Most players will probably camp far behind the baseline to retrieve his huge groundstrokes, so the drop shot will be a good mix up.

Come on. Almagro was down a break and almost lost the first set to GIMENO-TRAVER. And went to a five setter against Steve Johnson.

Here's a theory I haven't heard here yet. Janowicz only *wants* people to think he is crazy, to keep them on their toes. See? Waits for a questionable call. All of a sudden, Bam! "How many times?!! How many times." Bravo! What a theatrical performance. Genius. Wait a minute. By that logic, Janowicz might be crazy.
