AO 2017 Federer faces AO 2024 Sinner in a hypothetical final.
Federer was nearly geriatric, recovering from knee surgery but equipped with his neo backhand.
Sinner playing sublime hard court tennis who had just handed peak Djokovic his first loss in AO semis and ended his 33 match tournament win streak.

I think Federer takes this in 4.

Federer in straights.

Tough one. If you chose 2017 IW Federer I would say Federer wins. At the AO I think he was still building his confidence. It would be a close match for sure.

I think the 2018 version of Fed would lose to Sinner, probably in 5. It was clearly not as strong as 2017.
I agree. Sinner might be the best player both 2018 Fed and 2024 Djokovic faced.

But I feel like Fed was in slightly better form throughout 2018 than Djokovic here. At least he reached the final without dropping a set, even against big servers and power hitters like Struff and Berdych.

Cilic would have won the final if it had been played outdoors, but Tiley had other plans for his then favorite mate.

Fed doesn't need any sort of help to beat Marin Cilic in a slam final.
Cilic did not think the same and in the end there was no reason for that final to be played indoors.
Don't worry, your idol won't lose his title despite Tiley's tricks.

Yes, 2018 was still very solid, definitely better than this Djokovic.

Fed 2018 was clearly better than Djokovic 2024 - no questions asked. But the 2018 AO field was really bad - Djokovic returning from injury, Nadal injured after leading against Cilic, Murray and Stan severely declined and injured and no younger players good enough to challenge.

What a passive aggressive thread by a Rafan

And includes 3 guys not one of them is Nadal

The user mentioned Federer is geriatric then mentioned Nole is peak ( like he can't have issues due to sickness or anything )

Then gave Federer the win.

If this is not starting fan war I don't know what is.

Chill mate.....these are just opinions. No one is starting any fan wars lol.

Oh no a hypothetical. Is there Federer involved. Damn yes!

Need to type fast…..

It’s Federer in straights. Oh wait, it’s not the “so called mythical prime”, it’s probably a bit late. Never mind — “ Federer in 4”.

Phew, hope world is still right. I did my part well, I know.

Hypothetical Fed remains unbeaten.

Well, he still got breadsticked in the 5th despite having all the momentum. Can't blame the roof for that.

Hypothetical Fed vs Uninjured Bull. The unstoppable force meets the unmovable object.

Novak can’t possibly compete and will have to settle to just have the slam and #1 records. Sad, really.

It’s a tie between Hypofed and Fitdal. Always.

dont get overexcited
even djoker admit the loss is mainly because he played badly

fed got everything right at 2017 and played very very well

I’ve heard injured Novak could be unbeatable in hypothetical matches.

I have no idea how Sinner would match up against a guy like Federer. Matchups make a difference. The few times Fed played Med, he trashed him.

My gut says 2017 Fed in 5 over 2024 Sinner. But 2024 Sinner takes out 2018 Fed in 4

If Fed can beat the supposed GOAT, the one guy who supposedly completely owned him in H2H for their entire careers, and that guy was not even 30 at the time...he isn't losing to ANYONE in that form

Federer in straights.
These Sinner comparisons to Fed have just got to stop, they're truly embarrassing. Those idiotically making the comparisons obviously never even saw Fed play or were 3 years old in his active playing days.

2017 Fed beats any version of Sinner in straights and there's about 0% doubt in that. 2017 Fed beats any active ATP player in straights, even Djokovic in his current form.

Dude, I watched the whole SEASON in 2017. There is no way that old Fed touches 2024-present prime Jannik Sinner, not even at Wimbledon.
By the way, 2 months ago, we already got an accurate idea about how a match between 2011 Djokovic and 2024 Sinner would go at the AO.
So are you implying that 2017 Federer is considerably better than 2011 Djokovic at Australian Open?!! LMAO you should be the one to stop.

2017 AO Fed was still a bit inconsistent. Had to play many 5 set matches. I'm sure it would be a tough match for either of them. After Fed managed to beat Nadal it seems his confidence improved a lot. 2017 Indian Wells Fed, now that was a beast and would probably beat 2024 Sinner. But still not an easy match. Sinner is playing at an extremely high level right now.

Suffocating laughter, sorry. I saw Fed live at IW in 2017 playing his first three matches. There is no version of Sinner that is an "extremely high level" that gets close to 2017 to Federer. His serve, volley, FH, anticipation and experience are a 0 compared to old Roger.

Seeing someone in person doesn't really matter for comparison sake unless you've seen both players.

I don't know, maybe you'd have a completely different appreciation for this 2024 Sinner if you saw him up close.

It's not like Federer would routine this Sinner. The kid IS playing at an extremely high level (just lost to tiny though, who would also be a tough match against anyone).

Yes, 2017 Federer was superior, the hands and the shotmaking, the backhand, and the serve. It was all working great then. The IW version was especially unplayable.
