AO Prediction: Thiem to defeat Nadal in projected QF

The draw has just been released and is being analysed as we speak and Thiem and Nadal are in the same quarter. They are projected to meet in the QF, and if this does eventuate, I think Thiem has a decent chance at causing an upset. He has demonstrated he can be a threat on a hard court and has the power to go toe to toe with Rafa, as with saw at the US Open in 2018. He has the ability to turn defense into offense, but the main issue is see in his game is how far back he stands in rallies and ROS, he would benefit from moving forward and trying to shorten points. Although he's good at grinding, it is important that he conserve as much energy as possible, if he wants to make a good, deep run in this tournament.

Nadal's draw is from hell.

He will face Kygrios in R4, Thiem in QF and Medvedev in SF.

Rafa is possibly not even going to the QF. Even if he does, he could get beaten by both Thiem and Medvedev. Might also be exhausted with long matches.

There is no cost to making a prediction on TTW and no cost to being wrong. So there is no need for a giant hedge.

(Emphasis added) :D

The worst thing about being in Rafa's side of the draw is not facing Rafa, it's not facing Rafa.

Thiem has not yet reached the qf in the AO.
We will see if he can achieve it in this edition.

Thiem is not a good AO player, but I hope he can reach the QF, because Rafa's draw is a bit dull :)

Yeah, there's no guarantee that Thiem (or Nadal for that matter) will reach QF
There is a guarantee that Rafa will make the QF, given that he always makes the SF (Rafa is on the longest slam SF streak of his career, and overall he made every SF in 2019 except for Acapulco and London).

how did you come to this conclusion?

may I remind you that last year he had an injury.
then, when he recovered, he won a HC Masters.
later in 2019 he had a good run at WTF.
so, under Massu coaching, 2020 Thiem on HC should not be compared to past Thiem on HC.

That's up to you, if you want to exclude the past, no problem :)

You have to look at the alternatives though. It could have been Tsitsipas and Federer in QF and SF. Surely that wouldn’t look better.

I don’t think Rafa will actually meet many of the guys you mentioned. It will be a big task for them to even reach him.

That's a good point, the only guys in the whole draw that we can bank on to make the QFs are Rafa, Federer and Djokovic :)
In fact Federer has made more AO semi-finals than he's made at Wimbledon!
And Rafa-Kyrgios is the draw from heaven, because is there anything more fun than watching Rafa beat Kyrgios?
Wimbledon 2019 Rafa-Krygios was the most enjoyable non-big3 match in recent years, and Rafa won both tiebreakers despite that being Nick's specialty!

The biggest question mark is whether the draw will materialise, or the last gen will go down under. If the former, see post number 11. If the latter, the nadal will be running around like a Duracell rabbit.
