WATCH IT

Cibulkova is 1 of 3 in her previous GS QF experiences
she has done the more difficult job, by beating Sharapova
might be more powerful

Halep is for the first time at this level
might be more cerebral in her court geometry
but last year she accumulated several victories against top tenners
and she was masterful AND powerful in bagelling yesterday JJ

Cibulkova fan, always have been. I like that she's 5'3" and just swings for the fences. When she's on, she has a pretty game and the strokes to hang with any of the other ball-bashers on the WTA, all of whom are bigger and stronger than her...

I don't know anything about Halep.

I am going to say Cibulkova in three, although I have not watched any of Halep's recent matches.

I'm picking Halep in 3. I saw her in Cincy last year. She made mincemeat out of Stosur and Bartoli, only to get crushed by Serena on the big stage. I love Domi, but she can be inconsistent. She almost choked away big leads on sharapova and might not have pulled it off if sharpie was 100%. She also choked away a big lead to Vika here last year (or year before). Halep can handle an inconsistent big hitter. Can she handle the big stage? I think at this level yes, no nerves, fearless. Cibulkova has what it takes to beat her but I don't think she can hold up to halep's consistency. Halep is solid. I don't think she'll get past Vika, but Domi yes. Maybe even in 2.

An intriguing matchup and an absolutely enormous opportunity for these gals. Well deserved, since both seem to be hard workers.

Domi is also very sweet to the fans. Seen her a couple times at Stanford and she always has a smile and a wave for people cheering her on.

I am so bummed I'll be working when this is on. I'm curious enough that I'm going to try not to look at scores and watch when I get home. I have lost all confidence in my predictive abilities, so very curious to see how it turns out. Like em both.

4-3 C on serve
Cibulkova has started to feel the pressure, 3 DF

Halep plays longer and more accurate, let's see

5-3 serving for set C

for the time being Halep isn't playing long enough to counteract the power from C

H needs to serve and return better

Refreshing, different matchup. Seems like Cibulkova has been around forever, but she's only 24. Didn't realize what a solid career she's had already - at least QF at all of the Slams including SF at at the French, some tournament titles, over $4 million in prize money, and some wins over top players. The type of player that's easy to forget because she's a level below the top.

Cibulkova looking a bit like Kuznetsova today.

Quick, someone photoshop a She Hulk cover to read SheHulkova. Bonus points for a tight navy blue onesy.

Edit: here's your starting template.

Edit2: Is that a Western grip on She Hulk?

Not quite the match I was hoping for, and a match I expected to be a tough win for Halep.

Doesn't make for a very promising semi unfortunately - Azarenka is 7-3 vs. Domi and has never lost to her on hard court.

Halep's play was a good example of why players have coaches. Supposedly she's getting one soon; for now she looks quite unfocused compared to the end of last season. Good job, Dominika, and good luck in the semis against (almost certainly) Vika.

Her chances of beating Vika are slim, but the payoff would be a final of Domi vs. Li Na (or Bouchard) in the final, which would be fun to watch.

Yes:

Simona Halep to work with Wim Fissette - Kim Clijsters' former coach
---
Acording to some Romanian sources, Virginia Ruzici, Simona's manager, signed a deal with the 34 year old Belgian starting next week.
Let's hope this will work out well for Simona !
---

Halep didn't have any answers tonight with poor serving, poor returning, no plan B. Congratulations for reaching this stage for the first time: not negligible.

Bravo to Cibulkova.

LOL, Halep was fairly frank in her presser about her performance.

"Today I couldn't enjoy, and it was a big sh#! for me, this match."

"Yes, I am happy that I could play a quarterfinals here in Grand Slam. Was my dream before this. I don't want to disturb my mind very much this sh#! today, this match."
