I think I am going to pick Federer for this one.

* Murray-Nadal match is jinxed and since Nadal is not going to lose to Dimitrov , Murray will have to lose to Fed
http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=460343

* Keeping up with the trend of Nadal's draw evaporating, he will of course get Fed as his dream SF opponent ;-)

Rational reasons :

* Fed was much worse last year and Murray better and yet it went to 5 sets

* Always thought that Murray won't be a contender here since he hasn't even played a top player since his back surgery.

You find them hilarious ? But it is the main source of fodder for the VB which is eagerly waiting for the next admission of cheating or stealing from Federer. (remember the Davy bathroom break and towel stealing talk in these AO Courier interviews )
yeah, true . But well, that helps in having some fun at the expense of the VB ..... so its all good :)

Poor sbengte, Sid Vicious made you categorize your reasons after all those predictions.
But I think Murray-Nadal is no more jinxed since Murray is nowhere near his best. Murray 2.0-Nadal was jinxed.

Fed was much worse last year? Says who? Fed nearly went 2 sets to love down against James Duckworth (who)

Was speaking of the match with Tsonga. It went to 5 last year. Agreed that Tsonga wasn't in any red hot form this year, but Fed really mixed it up well and didn't let him settle into the match at all. Don't think Fed played this well against Tsonga last year, no way.

err, what ? he won that 6-4,6-4, 6-2, didn't lose serve even once.

so how on earth did he nearly go 2 sets to love down ?

I believe he was down a break each set. If Ducksworth didn't choke he could have closed out the sets, going up 2 sets to love. Fed was not impressive at all during that match despite the scoreline.

federer faced only one breakpoint in the entire match and saved that one.

in the 4 matches he's played, he's lost serve once - vs kavcic in the 2nd round .

Not that it's his priority, but Federer now must reach *at least* #AusOpen final to keep his decade-plus-long hold on the Swiss No1 ranking.

Can't believe how many people believe Federer will beat Murray:shock:

Tsonga is the worst returner in the Top 10 and Murray is arguably best or second best in that department so I can't see anything other than a Murray victory.

If you watched the match you would see what I mean.
I still don't get it. Yeah Federer didn't play his best, but that sometimes happens in opening rounds. (Andreev AO 2010 for example). Federer's had far bigger scares in the first week than Duckworth gave him.

And sure the tactics he used against Tsonga will not work as well as they did against Murray, but I thought abmk was talking about the year in general when he said "I don't see him being passive." It was my understanding that you mentioned Murray without abmk's post referring to Murray in any way, shape, or form.

I was talking about the bigger racquet and Edberg helping Federer have a better year. He might not beat Murray, but I've liked the few changes I've seen so far. After all, he has to do something even if all out S&V is not the way to go.

If you watched Fed's interview later on, he mentioned that he doesn't just show up on the court like he used to. He prepares for each player specifically and I am hoping this is where Edberg can help a lot. When you look at most of his losses to Nadal in 2008-2009, you would see that Nadal attacked Fed's backhand more but Fed never changed tactics. It was the same plays and same result (losses).

It's a great admission from Fed that he is willing to flex and adjust. He wants to keep winning and playing the game better. It takes a lot to be this motivated, this late in your career.

I watched bits of each of his four matches so far and the style varied subtly (more serve/volley, more baseline etc.). I don't think he will use the same tactics against Murray that he used against Tsonga. Let's hope he uses few plays that puts Murray in defensive. We know how quickly Murray gets in to his defensive shell. Fed needs to find a way to push him :)

Duckworth had more winners and aces. It's the errors that cost him. 17 errors from Federer to Duckworth's 38.
So, all you are saying is Duckworth went for his shots. he got half of them in and half of them out. Does it mean that he played better than the opponent even though his butt was kicked for 3 sets?

If Murray was healthy and could afford some good shoes, he'd straight set Jesus and his Dad as well (if they played tennis).

However, since he's from a Scottish ghetto and his back is not healthy, it's Fed in 3.

It should be Murray in 3, maybe 4. He's simply a more effective tennis player than a 2014-Federer.

But....don't know if Andy is fully back up to speed from his back surgery, so Roger has more of a chance than he would have had.

I'll still vote for Andy in 4, but I have reservations about that.

Roger in 4, and no particular result would be of any surprise.

Fed always has trouble with Murray except at majors. But Murray is now faster, has more confidence and is mentally tough thanks to Lendl. I still cant believe Fed got past Tsonga so easy especially after switching racquets.

Id like to see Murray beat Federer in 3.

Unfortunately, I have work tomorrow so will have to sneakily catch the score on the BBC website. All I'm saying is, please tennis gods can Fed win?

I'm getting splinters on my @rse from the fence on this one mate. I honestly see it as 50:50 - I saw all of Roger's match on Monday and for me, it was the best he's played in a slam since July 2012. That said, Murray is hitting the ball much better than many on here think - especially his DTL backhand, a shot that had more or less disapppeared over the last 18 months.

He's fit enough - his challenge is to get sufficiently focused and to maintain it throughout the match.

It's really hard to call, isn't it.

A couple of questions as you've probably watched his matches more closely than mine (Murray's):

Is Murray serving slower than usual in your estimation and, is Murray's back in perfect shape because I saw him gesture toward it on more than one occasion usually after attempting loopy top spin forehands off high bouncing balls..?

Really hard.

I don't think Murray's back has been absolutely perfect throughout the tournament. I think he was feeling something at the start of the Feli Lopez match. But - I tend to believe him when he says that he is feeling some pain, but not the same pain that he had the surgery for. I also think that his hand going to that area and pulling his shirt down is a bit of a tic that happens if he loses a point in disappointing fashion.

He has tended to take a bit off his serve in the first few rounds - I don't recall many 210+ bombs - but he has been pretty accurate and picked up a good few cheap points. I expect him to ramp it up a bit against Roger as serving well against him is very important if you're to have any chance.

He is hitting the ball really well - especially B/H DTL which had gone AWOL these last 18 months except on grass. His problem is intesity and general match sharpness - that's something that Roger can exploit.

Irrelevant to some degree as neither has a hope of getting past Rafa in the semis.

Murray took Rafa to 5 sets the first time they played the AO - when Murray was 19.

The next time they played at the AO - Rafa retired down 0-3 in the 3rd set having injured his knee at the end of the second set as he went 2-0 down.

If Murray is fortunate enough to beat Roger, then he will have a decent chance against Rafa if he beats Dmitrov.

I'm not convinced of Murray's form or his attitude to give it 100%. Whereas, Federer is in the best form I have seen since for well over a year and even though I am a big Murray fan I fully suspect he will win in four sets.

According to slam data, Federer should prevail.

Federer is feeling aging by now but Andy should not be in best form.

But Andy must have overcome his mental hurdle at slams via his 5 set victory over Federer in last AO.

So it should be interesting.
