Are “energy” drinks okay?

I find that energy drinks to be better then strong coffee for substaining the get up and go for at least half of the day! How is it for healthy wise?

Seems to me, just like coffee and other stimulants, it is better to take it gradually over time throughout the day than to drink it all at once. Makes more sense if you want to sustain energy for the long haul than gulping it down like a shot IMO.

Too much cardiovascular stimulation could cause increased BP and if you aren't in the best of shape could cause a stroke. You just have to read the labels on the drinks you are reffering to and do your research on the ingredients and come to your own conclusion if the benefits outweigh the risks.

Stroke unlikely but your point is well taken. Exercise tends to raise your BP, a jolt of caffeine can raise it further, probably not a good thing

Thanks guys! I will cut back to two energy drinks a day from four!

Wow, 4 a day! I've never even had 2 a day.

My preference is NO-sugar energy shots or energy drinks on an empty stomach (or in the absence of competing protein/amino acids). Energy shot would be something like 5-Hour Energy. I drink only 1 oz (1/2 bottle) at time, usually w/o other amino acid sources (except L-theanine). I'll often drink the other half of the bottle 2 or 3 hours later.

An energy drink that contain sugar could result in a blood sugar spike and a possible insulin reaction that decreases blood sugar to a level that is lower than your pre-drink level. With a no-sugar energy drink, it should work as long as blood sugar and glycogen storage are not too low.

Cut back to 1 a day and one cup of coffee a day. That would be ideal since you can stay up and get your energy but also get all the benefits of modest amounts of coffee per day.

Energy gel like GU does have benefits during the match. There is a reason why tour players use them. It really helps you to get the energy level constant during the match and avoid that tired slowdown during late stages of tough 2nd set and 3rd set

Sometime I lack energy after a night of sleep. A 12 oz. energy drink really help me get back the energy like it an “Underdog” pill! It just supercharges me mentally! Plus, the three that I like Red Bull, Cliff Edge and Zvel are pretty tasty too! Sometimes, I have both coffee and an energy drink together!

What about the crash that happens 8 hours later. Highs are great but lows are extreme. your brain has finite amount of fuel. burn them fast early and nothing in the tank later, that is why the crash happens

I do not realize that I have crash. I usually take a nap or go to sleep after 8 hours duration of time has pass. Many times, I take a 1/2 hour nap in the afternoons too!

On a more serious note, I drink a nitric oxide/ flavored beet juice drink in the morning. I believe it increases my energy levels and I notice I breath easier also.

One cup of coffee might be ok. However, the supposed benefits of coffee might or might not be due primarily be the caffeine it contains. Mixed opinions from the experts on the healthiness of coffee. Coffee might have a moderate amount of antioxidants. However, various teas are considered as much better source of antioxidants.

The "health benefits" of the low levels of antioxidants in coffee are probably/possibly nullified, and then some, by known carcinogens that it contains. Coffee actually contains hundreds of chemicals/constituents -- some of which have been classified as carcinogenic. Carcinogens and other nasties in coffee include Acrylamide, Dimethyl Disulfide, Quinic Acid, 2-Ethylphenol, Putrescine ...

Black coffee seems to be the healthier choice. Starbucks and all that other fufu coffee doesn't even taste right to me. Too much flavorings, cream and sugar is what makes it unhealthy.

+1000 its all fad. I had one cup of Starbucks and it was like sipping on pure sugar. I think people in US have a palette accustomed to too much sweetness so they have hard time distinguishing whats too sweet and whats just enough.

Of course! No, not really. I believe you are thinking of nitrous oxide.

True, similar to Viagra in some respects, is my understanding. That is an effect some write about with energy drinks that raise nitric oxide levels in the body. It has other benefits also.

Black coffee might be only marginally healthier according to some sources. Sure, the sugars, creamers, flavorings, etc might very well add more unhealthy stuff to coffee, but I'm fairly certain the the carcinogens and other nasties mentioned in my post #18 links are constituents of plain (black) brewed coffee. As are the following:

http://www.springerlink.com/content/r165687515131203

(From the link above) -- "Over a thousand chemicals have been reported in roasted coffee: more than half of those tested (19/28) are rodent carcinogens. There are more rodent carcinogens in a single cup of coffee than potentially carcinogenic pesticide residues in the average American diet in a year, and there are still a thousand chemicals left to test in roasted coffee."

(From a related source) -- "More than a thousand chemicals have been reported in roasted coffee. Of 28 chemicals tested, 19 are rodent carcinogens. There are more rodent carcinogens in a single cup of coffee..."

This seems like utter baloney.

I'll read more about it after work; I immediately noticed the age of the source though.

From reading a variety of different sources, it would appear that plain coffee contains both positive & negative chemicals. Question is: Is coffee's net effect on health beneficial or detrimental? Mayo Clinic & other sources feel that it might be more beneficial than not. But other sources appear to suggest otherwise.

Coffee is good enough for the 1700 era Western frontiersman, it good for all people! Been provide over 300 years!

What was the life expectancy of those 1700 era Western frontiersman? Perhaps 35 yrs or so?
Maybe 45 year, but are life expectancy is around 78-82 now depending on gender but we are drinking even more coffee then in the 1700s! So that mean coffee consumption is not harming humans, right?

I used to drink Monster before matches but the caffeine gave me the jitters and I just knew it wasn't a good thing for my body. I switched to G Fuel, linked below, and I have really liked this stuff. It doesn't give me the initial jitters and stays level throughout my tennis sessions. It seems expensive at first but at 40 servings it is cheaper than any canned energy drinks. Honestly, for me I think it benefits me with mental clarity and focus more than energy.

I gotta think that the advancements to medical science and technology and the improvements to the quality of life played a pretty considerable factor in the increase of life expectancy in humans. ;)

I never drink the fully leaded ones, and these days I've mostly switched off to using my preworkout instead, though I'll have a Bang every now and then, but not too often. If I really need a boost and time is a factor or I'm on the go, I might pop a piece of my Energy Gum that has like 100 mg of caffeine in it. That stuff works pretty well, especially in the mornings at work when I'm trying to make it to lunch time for my afternoon workout.

Coffee probably isn’t harmful all things considered. There’s no real substantial evidence in any case, aside from spurious association studies. I drink black coffee quite a bit. I also drink green tea. Both do the job well enough

A lot of the preworkouts use like a proprietary blend of natural caffeine mostly from coffee beans and tea extract.

Just try a can of RedBull in a bar and it now it is my favorite energy drink. It pretty pricey at $5.50 for 12 oz. can. I going to go to Costco where they buy their supply.

Where do you live that Red Bull is 5.50 per can? The Rockstar regular is pretty similar and so the Monster. Those are much more affordable options. You can get 16 ounce cans for 1-1.50 sometimes here in the States. Even Red Bull is usually 2.50 per can.

You could try the other flavors - I really like silver ice and fruit punch ones, and even the blue one isn't bad.
Might buy the other flavors when it is on sale at the grocery store but I happy with Red Bull. I am going back to the same bar and restaurant and get another Red Bull drink! Just have to have it now! Maybe I have become addicted to it already it is so good tasting!

I’ve been know to have a monster energy drink from time to time. I’m sure it’s basically poisoning myself when I do. I did a LOT of research and found these energy gels. They work and are far better for you than any energy drink.
