It is a shame the kid cannot break through to the next level. I really like his overall game, it is the mental part he just cannot seem to grasp.

His movement sucks.

I thought it would improve because of his length and age, but he just doesn't have elite movement to be a top player.

He played well today. These 250 tournaments are glorified exhibitions. Don't forget Roger lost at Hopman Cup but went on to win Aussie Open over nemesis #1.

That same nemesis lost to Sam Querrey in Mexico and then lost twice to Fed in CA and FL and Thiem in Rome.

I think Grigor has great tennis left in him. One game got away from him and he needs to work on that but he can still run and everything else. He did not melt down like last year against Schwartzman.

We seem to all be rollercoaster fanatics.

High highs, low lows.

Or maybe we are fans of dramas, filled with twists and turns.

Or it could be that we are fans of rapid changes in fortune. Rags to riches to rags.

Not sure losing to Jerzy makes him a complete write off. Yet. Janowicz made it to 14 in the world then played only a handful of matches in '16 before knee surgery. Hasn't been the same player since but still has that huge serve and heavy groundies.

So don't lose all hope yet! Still plenty of time to get help. :D

He isn't match tough. He needs to play more matches. He plays once every ten days which isn't enough match play to get better. Either play more tournaments or play doubles. He didn't even play between Monaco and Madrid and the 31 year old played 10 matches during that time, Dimitrov played once.

I think he's only distracted when he's hustling one babe out of the bedroom door while he ushers in another one. Then another one after that. :p
Yeah I'm starting to think that his girl issues are in-line with his tennis issues. Seeing a pattern here.

Don't care if Sampras doesn't want to coach or travel right now but Grigs needs him badly. Something along the lines of a Agassi-Djokovic partnership could work at Wimbledon. Pete could help him mentally during important points, when/what to do. Maybe tweak his serve alittle.

In 2003, the year he won Wimbledon and was at about the same stage in his career as Grigor is now, Fed played two rounds of Davis Cup (including DC doubles) and he played every tournament he could and he played 23 matches of ATP doubles. Including singles doubles and DC, Federer played 120 matches in 2003. And remember, many of those ATP finals were five set finals, even the 500 tournaments.

Grigor plays not even half of that schedule. How is he going to get better if he doesn't play?

Wasn't Fed's 2003 win-loss record 78-17? That means 95 matches, not 120.

Grigor had and still has the talent to win a couple majors but it won't happen at this stage. Safin will always be > than Grigor.

And how did he get good? Playing matches. And it's not true that Fed stopped playing doubles after 2003. He got to the final of IW in 2011 and got to the final of Halle in 2014. Wawrinka played the week before the FO in Geneva and won the tournament, then went to RG and got to the finals! Good players play a ton of matches. Fed is a bit of an anomaly in the last few years but Fed can pick to play only 1000s because he usually gets to the semis or finals and has to rest up the next week.

But let's step back here. What is GD's strategy? How is he going to beat the best players, or even Janowicz? With his serve? From the baseline? He has to play an all-court game, he has no alternative, he's not good enough from the baseline. And how is he going to develop that game, in practice? In the gym? Look at Sock, he's developed a nice touch game because he's become the best doubles player on tour. GD can't develop that touch in practice, under stressless conditions where nothing matters. He lost to Janowicz cause he choked in the 1st set tiebreaker, because he has no match play in the last three months. He's not going to get better in stressful matches by practicing, only by playing matches.

He may crash and burn but he could also play well like he has more often the last year than the previous 12 months. I think he can go far at Wimbledon again.
