Are most outdoor courts in your city locked up?

I just stumbled upon 3 nice looking courts tucked in a neighborhood maybe 5 minutes from my house - locked up. Actually double locked. This makes 8 courts very close to me, all with locks. The city even took down the nets at a couple places to keep anyone from thinking about playing tennis. Is it a stupid liability thing or what?

Where I'm originally from, all the high school and neighborhood courts are mostly open for public use. Very rare to see one locked up, some even have free lights. Seemed like a superior system.

The closest courts to my house are locked. The next closest courts are unlocked but seemed more like a place for druggies and homeless to hang out.

The next closest courts are at a high school and they are brand new and unlocked. We played there once during a football game and several middle school kids were hanging out on another court. They started throwing rocks onto the court and at the fence and they left their trash on the court.

So, I guess in this area, it's better that the courts are locked.

I’ve seen the trend of locking courts over the past 15 years. It’s for liability and vandalism purposes.

We keep ours locked up for now so nobody takes a snow shovel to them.

locked up courts:?)) no need anymore as very few ppl are playing tennis nowadays except very rare die hard tennismaniacs like us a few regulars. lololololol spiderwebs started locking up the gate as i had to spend a few min to get rid of them in order to get in a few days ago, apparently no one even tried to open the gate until then. even ao lost the inspiration power to pop up a few short lifted bubbles nowadays............................

quite a few tennis meetup groups online app showing only the organizer loner attendance, wata joke. no one else there despite of 'all levels welcome' even for free, lololololololol m8ohm8......................

I think in most communities this could be common. They want to keep the courts clean and free of skateboarding.

Public parks are generally open, until sundown, later if they have lights.

there'r no locks in any of the dozen syn carpet courts n not yet ever seen any1 skateboarding or roller skating there. they've got much better places to go like ramps/tubes made for them in the parks. seems quite simple, ppl'r deserting the tennis courts, ie tennis itself.

recent couple of yrs almost no kids join so called 'camps' etcetc n a while ago occasionally saw couple of non club member or random ppl arming the balls in 1 or 2 courts. a young coach tried to stop them n asked them to pay courts fee etc n that young coach later ended his own life sadly. now no one cares n no random ppl either just wonder if they ended their lives as well........................

In the remote case there were unlocked public tennis courts in my town, the nets would not be there any more in less than 24 hours.

In my area, the county parks that have courts don't lock the courts. But a few high school courts nearby are, disappointingly, locked up.

Public courts near me are not locked, whether in parks or school grounds. I was surprised the first time I tried to play at a high school in Tucson after a meeting - the entire campus was locked up. I was told that vandalism is a real problem, at least in the southern part of Tucson. On the other hand, the courts at Reid Park are open and in great condition, although there is a nominal charge.

Where I am from 45 or so years ago there are 6 unlocked public park courts that have free lights. The lone high school has 8 nice open courts without lights.

Where I live now, in a town of near 200K, we have 16 accessible courts. 8 unlocked at the Uni with horrible lights. At the public park that has courts there 8 and you have to pay for the horrible lights. We have 7 high schools with 4 courts each, all are locked and only accessible by the high school teams. Tennis is dying...

HS & University courts that are either new or resurfaced are locked. Either a key or a school ID is needed to open the gate. Creates a long wait to get on a court elsewhere.

ps Believe boomers are dying...............................still have 4 indoor/outdoor private clubs packed with senior players. May still have over 200 public courts

I've had residents of a private neighborhood kick me off their unlocked courts. Courts no one was using but me. And I was even playing tennis.

I know at my highschool they installed magnetic locks, but anyone was welcome to get a key fob if they lived in the district (you just had to be a resident, not a student)

Might wanna inquire with whoever would be the relevant parties and see if they allow access.

U kidding, eh? This rink is across from the tennis courts. Kids take the net down for hockey wearing roller blades, marking up the courts.

Public (municipal) courts are open. Some outdoor courts belong to clubs or are otherwise privately owned so they are locked.
