Are Norrie and Basilashvili elite players?

At least Krajinovic level of elite, yes.

To be fair to the alleged ********* at least he has beaten some decent players.

Norrie just beat the guys who beat the guys (and the same will be true even if he win the title)

The way the press in this country is getting all hot and bothered over it is making me laugh. The guy's obviously a good player, he was playing top 20 level tennis this year, gave Nadal a good run for his money in Australia, etc. but come on... If you can find highlights of the absolute schooling Alcaraz gave him in New York I would encourage all to watch. He's just a guy.

Norrie is same calibre like Ramos, Delbonis .

Unless one is part of his family, not sure how anyone can like him.

Both these guys are nice players but I am not sure whether they can maintain this level in grand slams where it's best of 5 sets.

No but who even is these days? No player on the tour right now compares to the Big 3/4 and every player hovering around the top 20 right now can go on a good run. Also it seems people have already forgotten that earlia this year we had another Masters final like this between Sinner and Hurkacz, the latter of which is top 10 and Norrie is now only 300 or so points away from being top 10 too so i don't know why people are acting like this is some unbelivable shock.

I swear sometimes it feels like people only know the big names and next gen hopefuls Zverev/Medvedev/Tsitsipas are only slighly better than the rest of the top 20. None of them have that same unbeatable aura we've been used to seeing this past 15 years so results like today will happen more and more.

Norrie could be a dark horse to win the AO if the courts are mud slow and the draw falls just right for him.

Do you have to be at Big 3 level to be considered ‘elite’? Isn’t top 20-30 level pretty elite especially if you can bash the ball harder than everyone else like Nico can?

Before this century, the ATG champs lost a lot in smaller tournaments and even in Slams and the titles used to be spread across many players in the top 20. The Big 3 have been so consistent in every tournament that they played for 15 years that they have truly established a higher standard of excellence that tennis never had before them. That’s why their career winning % in ATP matches is all in the top 5 even though they are all playing well into their thirties.

If other players have to play at that consistent level of greatness in all tournaments to be called ‘elite’, then I am afraid that the wait is going to be long for the next ‘elite’ player. If you watch these players live in person, the tennis they all play is stunningly high-level and the guy who comes up on top is invariably the one who believes he should win. Otherwise, if you put a mask over all their heads, it will be tough to tell the top-10 players apart from other top-50 players. I have felt that way every time I watch a pro tournament from the stands for decades. You have to win a lot to get that confidence and mental edge though and you need to be slightly better in technique to win a lot.

Do you think we have taken for granted how easy it was for the big 3 to win the first few rounds? You almost took it as a given they would make at least the quarters or semis of every tournament they played. The consistency was better than anything we've seen and maybe anything we will ever see again.

Look forward to Norrie's next slam appearance to justify the recent hype.

Let's see what this new British number one is made of.
I mean he lost to Nadal, Nadal, Federer (took a set), Alcaraz this year, it was not so bad.

A bunch of guys from the 3R/4R school of slamming are retiring, I can't see why Chuck can't join the club. Maybe even steal a QF.

They have both been victimized by vicious Western anti-Slavic bias their entire lives
Oh, without doubt. Remember the absolute world-wide hatred for Slavic tennis players of the past-- everyone on the planet DETESTED them all:

Safin
Kafelnikov
Navratilova
Kournikova
Sharapova
Seles (because of "vicious Western anti-Slavic bias" people were happy she was stabbed)
Davydenko
Mecir
Nastase
Tiriac

ad infinitum....

Djokovic fans just can't grasp the dislike of him has nothing to do with where the hell he comes from.

You can add Novotna and Ivanovic to that list, a Czech and a fellow Serbian, two of the most popular players ever!

Let's see what Norrie can do next season. His ranking has risen this year similarly to that of the women's winner - Paula Badosa (#71 & #70). It seems Norrie has been on tour a lot longer than Badosa, but fans want to see players make improvements. I don't understand why people are expecting things to be done so rapidly rather than players adapting with experience and making small gains here and there. Norrie's played a bunch this year and will need to cope with the expectations and pressure of defending results/points from 2021, next year. That, I expect could derail some players but we will see if Norrie can keep this consistency and drive up next year when he starts to be highly ranked in most tournaments he plays.

Worked for this guy!
This guy can handle everything from both wings, and return with interest.

Casper Ruud, the player a lot of the TT regularly like to p@@p on, demolished Norrie two weeks ago, being close to a Goffin-Berdych performance.

Norrie got a perfect run of opponents to win a masters, but he has such a huge achilles heel with his pushing straight-arm BH, any title he wins going forward will inevitably have to be on the back of a run of suitable opponents.

Forget your personal prejudices about his looks. What's that got to do with his tennis?
Nothing wrong with his looks . His tennis is pathetic in terms of aesthetics. He has got his results , if you are someone who just cares about results alone , so be it .

So, people can put up with Med's ugly shots but not Norrie's?

Norrie's not going to be a title contender when other big players like Med, Tsitsi, Thiem or Zv are playing well. He got a great draw and the surface suits him. IW surface is not everyone's cup of tea.
But for posters to pooh pooh his title win smacks of sour grapes to me. He won fair and square. Let him enjoy his win.

Don't understand you. He is showing signs of being one of the game's great returners and hits some amazing shots to justify that. His serve is admittedly a bit weird and inconsistent but otherwise I just don't see your point.
