Are there tennis players who are as big or buff as football players?

tennis players donet need big buff arms like football players but leg wise their are tons. Michael Chang has one of the most biggest quads

Surprised nobody mentioned Robby Ginepri--The guy is sponsored by Under Armour-and is the biggest man pound for pound on tour

No way, many people will bring up nadal but football players like reggie bush and brian dawkins will make nadal look like a girl

This is truth.

Tennis is a sport of finesse, speed, and agility. Being too 'buff' will limit your range of motion. (example: body builders who can't scratch their own back)

Football is a sport of raw strength and/or speed.

The biggest tennis players are barely hitting 200 lbs. whereas, a majority of football players are well over 200 lbs.

Jan-Michael Gambil and Paradorn come to mind. But nowhere near the beef of a football player, maybe a corner back, but I doubt it. Just compare the height to weight and you'll get your answer and see that tennis players lack in the beef department.

robby looks pretty big and yes while big body builders arent flexible it doesnt mean big ppl cant be flexible. Monfils is very built but since he is also very tall he doesnt look as big.

there are hardly any players with huge physiques because tennis doesn't require one to have a huge physique. unlike football, tennis isn't about raw power. finesse, speed, and coordination are the prevalent agents that tennis revolves around.

Nadal is pure show and deceptive, the only thing "big" he has is his left arm, but that's about it. Have you ever seen him without a shirt? He has NO chest and NO abs whatsoever. Not a pretty sight.

His right arm is slim too, the thing is it's kinda defined, but it's not like his left.

The only one I saw which is kinda even all around, was tursunov. Sure, he's not that big, but he's really cut.

Isnt that an understatement???Well they are more buff but hes got the one of the best muscles on tour....

I don't even think Nadal is one of the biggest guys on tour. He's just the only guy that wears sleeveless shirts every match so people assume his arms look bigger and better than everyoen else.

Good point.

Anyone knows when does Federer plays in Madrid? Wednesday?

Point taken but you cant think his muscles are like a girls now would you????

On tour, for sure. But seriously take a gander at some NFL players and nadal will look like a waterboy.

Robby is about 5'11 and he's not that big. He is toned, but I've seen community college cornerbacks that were bigger than him.

who's this? berrer?

Gambill. Last year. He might be a little bit bigger this year.

Taylor Dent has the shoulders of a football player, he's very square shouldered, but he's much thinner now than I think I've ever seen him before.

tsk tsk

this thread is such a joke. there is no comparison. not even close. nadal? are you serious? maybe if you compare him to kickers or maybe even some wide receivers (skinny ones like todd pinkston). but seriously. theres no debate.

aaron, look at the pic i posted  and compare it to nadal.

Well I'd have to agree that tennis pros have nothing on football players...
though it's a totally pointless comparison since pure muscle power is obviously a big factor in football, and tennis is pretty much a pure skill related sport.
I mean just look at Federer and all the greatest all time players... they've never been ripped.

Personally I think more noticeably muscular players like Nadal are good for the sport though, because among certain ignorant people tennis still has somewhat of a reputation as a wimpy rich person's pastime. Of course we all know that this couldn't be farther from the truth, but a bunch of wimpy looking players are much help. And heck, adding some strength training can only mean bringing more to your game :)

no.. because u dont need big muscles to play tennis lol, just needa be extremely fit, and i guess strength could help alot, but being too strong would only limit ur game

You cant really compare Tennis Players to Football players in terms of physique since their sports require different things. A lot of the speed positions are probably faster than most ATP players in a straight line but I bet they cant change direction like ATP pros and I dont think theyre knees would be able to take very much abuse on hardcourts. Bsketball players and Tennis players have much more similar physiques and comparing weights to height they are pretty close

Lets put your experiment this way:

Swap any tennis player with a football player for one day. You know the result arent pretty.

The only real comparison is that in both sport, you have to be able to run like hell.

He's wearing a lot of padding. You have to post photos of them without that.

Tell me the black guy is hugely built.

Look at the guy in the middle. Even with pads he's not that big.

People dont realize muscle mass negatively affects your game? You cant be bulky and a top lvl player.

pictures are deceiving because their size is only relative to the people around them. you have to place them in a picture next to a regular person that around 5 ' 8 - 6' that weighs around 160-180ish (this is what is assume most adults are though i know a decent amount that's 6' and weigh only 140). you'll then see quite a bit of difference.

Are there tennis players who are as big or buff as football players (assuming we're talking about the respective "players" from the PROFESSIONAL ranks)? No.

Big as e.g. football linemen? No, no, no, no, no.

Buff as e.g. football "skill position" players? No, no, no, no, no.
Fast as e.g. football "skill postition" players? No, no, no, no, no.
Athletic as e.g. football "skill postition" players? No, no, no, no, no.

That's why THESE guys are tennis players and why THOSE guys are football players. The "football-esque" jocks in tennis may exist but they're needles-in-haystacks.

Sorry, but that's the truth. As fast as Rafa is (and he's got a great motor), there are a slew of D.B.'s, receivers, running backs, etc. who'd blow his doors in, sprint-wise.

Oh my god, this guy playing open at a recent tournament here in so cal was hulk hogan big, I mean this guy was about 6'4" and built like a pro wrestler. Made the guy above look like the 98 lb weakling. He was incredibly athletic and could "flick-drive" a ball like nothing I've ever seen before. While I was watching, the other team never hit a ball to him...

Michael Berrer is the biggest guy I have ever seen play tennis. He is a beast, he doesn't even look like a tennis player. He looks like a WWE wrestler playing tennis, last time I saw him.

I would like to think that tennis players physiques are optimized for the game; they are not leaving much on the table. If you took an NFL running back or receiver you would probably find that they are slower in quick direction changes by virtue of the xtra weight they are carrying.

A lot of the speed positions are probably faster than most ATP players in a straight line but I bet they cant change direction like ATP pros

It wouldn't be a contest at all, the speed at which tennis players change directions(on a tiny tennis court, where anticipation is more important than speed) is a joke compared to what NFL players can do. NFL receivers can change directions on a dime, this isn't track & field or something, its not played on a straight line. Time any receiver moving sideways, backwards, walking on their hands, whatever & comparing it to how Nadal does the same sort of things would be sort of sad.

It's odd that some here seem to think football is a sport just about brute power or speed, it requires a lot more than that, it requires agility & coordination as well, pretty much everything.

Maybe they should have more tennis players on Dancing With the Stars, so we can see how coordinated they are compared to NFL players, aren't they all cleaning up on that show? :)
