Are we in a strong era again?

Nadal as well. And Agassi. And Hewitt. And Safin.

He didn’t have just one guy.

I do consider Roddick a tougher opponent than Medvedev though. 2004/2009 Wimb F’s are better efforts than any of Med’s

What year are we talking about? Nadal and Agassi barely overlapped.

Agassi - old. Using him is like pointing to Djokovic. Yes, they still put on a great contest, but the end result is rarely in doubt.
Safin - headcase. His two performances at the AO against Fed are excellent, but he was not performing like that regularly.

Roddick was better, but barely. Medvedev is not as bad as Fed fans would have you believe.

It's a strange situation; we have two ATGs who are in prime form and look to dominate for years, and are having a great rivalry.

But we have no depth whatsoever. Not many years ago, we had Djokovic, Federer, Nadal, Murray, Wawrinka, del Potro, Berdych, Tsonga, Ferrer, Thiem, Cilic, Nishikori, etc. Great at the top and great depth.

Now, Medvedev, Zverev, Ruud and Tsitsipas have declined (especially the last one), and Djokovic is about to turn 39. Rune stagnated and even got worse, and he was once called to be the third leg in the rivalry.

Draper, Shelton and Musetti need to take that step forward to the next level to make it more interesting, which Fritz was never able to take. And FAA's comeback might help if he continues as he did this year.

But the ones who can truly make it better are Fils, Michelsen and especially Fonseca.

Mid 2014 had the strongest top10 ever name wise.

Big4, Stan, Delpo, Ferrer, Berdych, Nishikori, Raonic.

I think if we are going to see any competition it will come down to a group of players performing well at the same time. So, a draw where Sinner has to go through Draper and FAA both playing their best could be interesting (even if it's not enough to stop a final between Alcaraz - Sinner).

And then retired against Zverev. And even if he didn't he wouldn't beat Sinner.

This basically like these girls who argue to argue. Statement: men are taller than women.
Girl: BUT I KNOW THIS ONE GIRL WHO'S 5'11

Dude who cares, it changes nothing. Cherry pick some more.

It's not "cherry-picking", he beat Alcaraz at a slam being 16 years older.

You choosing to ignore that is ridiculous, it's not cherry picking pointing out that he did. Not to mention he only lost once to him, it's not like he went 1-4. Wait, it was Alcaraz against Djokovic who actually was 1-4.

I would say it is a Liquid Era . Two potential double digits slam winners (Alcaraz,Sinner), slow and old operated knee Djokovic as number 3 and the rest of top 20 sucks.
Not as strong as the Gas era of the Big 3 + Murray, Wawrinka , Del potro, high quality top 10 players.
But not as week as the Solid era of 2002-2004 .

I am talking generally. 2004-2007

Might as well cut out Djokovic’s last 11 years then

Roddick is better and that’s all that matters. Don’t really rate Medvedev

No, because Novak aged better than Agassi. That said I would cut out the last 2 years for Novak.

I don't care if you rate Med, he accomplished as much as Roddick ever did and you can hardly point to something Roddick did better except for his serve.

That’s a good point as now days a big serve won’t get you into the top five like it did back then.

Med is far more well rounded

Well, Ruud was in the top five not too long ago. He is very controversial when it comes to his playing ability. Some even argue he is one of the worst top ten players ever despite his career-high ranking.

I am talking about Novak facing an aging Fed after 2013.

No, Fed also aged better than Agassi. Rafa aged the worst of the big 3, and even he was competitive until around 2019 - 2020.

He had one very competitive final at Wimbledon, but the other times they played were not nearly as close. On top of that his overall win/loss record is almost Monfils bad: 21 - 3.

1-4 happens a lot even in rivarlies against the best players. 1-7 does not, it's a huge difference. A couple of matches is a streak, 7-1 is a clear pattern especially considering Alcaraz also won their first ever meeting before both were on the ATP tour, their first ATP tour match ever and all of that despite being 2 years younger than Sinner.

Also, unless Djokovic retires tomorrow he's going to have a losing h2h against Alcaraz. And so will Sinner.

The problem isnt Medvedev, the problem is that Medvedev is the best player of his generation (or even decade).

People like to compare Medvedev to Roddick, which really is to compare an 80s gen tier 2 player with 90s gens best player.

The correct thing would ofc be to compare Medvedev to Federer or Djokodal, if we really want an impression of how bad the 90s gen is. These are the best players of their generations.

I don't know what the 1-7 comes from but saying Djokovic loses everytime against Alcaraz is just wrong if they went 1-1 this year and he beat him at a slam.

You can say Djokovic loses every time against Sinner these days, but Alcaraz? No way.

But it's not really that simple, because 90s gen played under the spell of the big 3 hangover. The point is that Fed kept Roddick well in check, and Old Nadal and Old Novak kept Med in check, too, for the most part. On the one hand, Fed was a lot closer in age to Roddick. On the other hand, Med can at least claim one victory over the pair.

Besides, I've never been fully onboard with grouping players just by the decade they were born in.

Bad excuses imo, it is that simple.

Federer couldnt hold Nadal or Djokovic in check. And Fedal couldnt hold Djokovic in check. Meddy is 10y younger than Djokodal, and 15y younger than Fed, i dont think we can blame the Big3 hangover.

Besides, if Big3 were the only ones holding the 90s gen down, they should be winning slams now. Reality is that Sincaraz are dominating them even more than Big3 did.

You also said yourself that Roddick > Medvedev. So basically a tier 2 player of the 80s gen is better than the best player of the entire 90s decade.

I agree with the last comment, but my point is that the difference is slight. Medvedev is not that much worse than Roddick. Who was Fed's "big rival" during his best years (depending on how you define best years).

I see your point, i just think it needs to be pointed out that Fed-Roddick and Nole-Medvedev isnt fair comparisons. It becomes more clear if one name them Federer-gen, Djokodal-gen, and Medvedev-gen.

Its just very fascinating that people are mocking Fed for not winning a lot in his thirties while Djokodal did. One was hunted by 5-6y younger peak ATGs, the other one was hunted by 10y younger Medvedev, a "weak Roddick"

That’s more of a points issue which we’ve talked about and is very valid, they’re rewarding too many points when they shouldn’t if you play certain tournaments

His initial rise into the top ten was after winning many Atp 250s tournaments but in 2022, which was his best season, the vast majority of his points was not from Atp 250s. Without Atp 250s someone like FAA this year would be definitely ranked lower. It is not as simple as reducing points from Atp 250s as that would also affect " deserving players". I am a Ruud fan and I do not believe he is as bad as some people say even if he declines and even if he was a weak top 5, I just wanted to say that some players who many fans claim are not that good like Ruud have also been in the top 5.

Nadal went MIA after that though. 2014 wasnt bad, but you already saw early signs of the bad 90s gen. I guess Milos at #10 was the only 90s player here?
I wrote name wise.

ATP points wise, 2015 was peak, and ''age wise'' (if you think players in the mid 20s are best), 2011-12 was peak.

And where the did 1-4 come from again?

Sinner, Alcaraz and Djokovic this year had a score 72-1 in Slams and ATP Finals against the field.

Best score three players ever had at the biggest tournaments.

This is the age-old question, is the rest of the field that bad or are they that good? Perhaps a bit of both?
They’re definitely not as good as they seem.
If you wanna say they’re great(numbers say that they are) thats fine but, besides when having played each other(which let’s be real here equated to maybe 4 good sets outta 16 this season)there’s no way to evaluate these two as they play no one of note with the exception of Novak in his late 30’s. Low bar for these two to step over.

May be, but 72-1 is never easy.

In their career Big3 have lost 62 Slams to players outside the top10. Even assuming that the current top10s are weak and are the same level as players outside the top10 in other eras, beating them in 72/73 matches is not easy.
Same can be said for Federer 2004-2007, he basically only lost to Nadal. Is that a sign of strength?

Djokovic was 4-1 against Alcaraz before the USO match.
Ok so you DID take a specific timeframe and you're acting surprised that I did the same? Didn't notice the 7-1 run that Alcaraz had over Sinner at some point, but you're the first to point Djokovic's run over Alcaraz?

BauerAlmeida's world.

Ok so you DID take a specific timeframe and you're acting surprised that I did the same?

But I never did that

The only thing I did was mention that it's not cherry picking for him to bring up the fact that he beat Alcaraz at a slam this year and they're 1-1. So saying Djokovic is always losing to Alcaraz is nonsense and lumping Alcaraz and Sinner together is dishonest; he is losing to Sinner, not to Alcaraz.

Well, they played some extraordinary tennis in the Roland Garros final.
More errors than winners for both and two choke jobs isn’t exactly extraordinary and neither one played well at the same time but was definitely a roller coaster Hell, CA was practically trying to give that match away down 3 match points, just got lucky.

The match having more errors than winners does not mean that it was not very high quality, nobody played at the same level all the time but the quality of the rallies was breathtaking at times and Sinner did not give up even after wasting match points.

That 7-1 that Alcaraz pulled against Sinner was embarassing, there were so many threads on it. I literally had to check where the 4-1 was coming from.

It was a bad loss for Alcaraz, but honestly I think it was Djokovic's swan song. He shouldn't beat Alcaraz in a big match ever again, the US Open just confirmed it. If Djokovic beats Alcaraz again I'll take it back. I excused the Olympics, because Djokovic played like a madman and straight setted everyone despite having a brutal draw. 2025 AO was one match and to be hoenst Djokovic played as well as he could and Alcaraz was too meh and just unclutch. He does it again I'll be the first to diss Carlos, cause there's no excuse for someone who's entering his prime to lose to a 38/near 39 year old player even if it's Djokovic.

Btw who do you think would win if Alcaraz-Djokovic played at the FO and/or Wimbledon?

No, Fed also aged better than Agassi. Rafa aged the worst of the big 3, and even he was competitive until around 2019 - 2020.
So what? He still posed no threat to Novak in BO5. Old Fed being considered, but not Agassi is typical Novak fan bias (not saying it applies to you).

And you said Agassi was aging which is the same phenomenon Fed went through, so why change the goal posts? Aging better still means he is an aging player.

2 competitive finals at Wimb actually. And a decent USO showing in 2006.

Outside USO 2021, Med didn’t have a decent showing vs Novak

It was, yes, there was a retirement and a match with MPs that could have made it closer, but still, 7-1 when we are talking ATGs almost the same age and across different surfaces is bad.

Yeah, I don't see Djokovic beating Alcaraz Bo5 again, he's 39 next year.

Btw who do you think would win if Alcaraz-Djokovic played at the FO and/or Wimbledon?

Next year Alcaraz wins everywhere, Djokovic is too old now.

Djokovic played well at the FO this year, he could have had a slim chance had he faced Alcaraz instead of Sinner. At Wimbledon, the surface should favor him more, but he played clearly worse.

Agassi was aging and Safin was inconsistent. Do you regard Roddick as better than Medvedev as in he has the higher ceiling or is he just the better player despite not having the better ceiling?
But Fed at least in 2004-2005 had to beat more than 1 of the guys I’ve mentioned to win his slams. His draws were much tougher than the draws from this era, it’s not even close. Just compare Sinner’s draws in 2024-2025 to Fed’s in 2004-2005

You should start betting, you will get rich.

Since you are able to evaluate the level of players of different eras you should be able to evaluate the level of current players as well.
You just need to watch both matches. Unless you think peak Sinner > peak Fed on grass, Roddick absolutely played the better match
