Back then I was a late stage Agassi, and then Roddick and Blake fan. I didn’t like Nadal from day 1.

Everyone who is a Fed fan started off because he was winning everything & the manner in which he winning, denying this is surely lying.

In the early 2000s all the people who started off with Tennis were not fans of the ponytailed man, some were fans of Safin, Hewitt, Old Agassi, Old Pete, Nalby, Guga Kuerten ..... once Federr started to dominate and took control lot of public jumped ships and became his fans, only a few of this crowd (mainly pete fans) did not like this dominance and they became Nadal fans later on.

I don’t think it’s a mutually exclusive proposition tho.

By 2006 critics were calling Federer the GOAT because of his dominant game AND what they considered the most captivating game ever played. This was long before the records.

(It’s a similar phenomenon that’s happening with Alcaraz now. His game is just exciting to watch in a way others are not.)

To your point tho - “Ballerina” and “pretty backhand” jokes aside - nobody would have cared how aesthetically pleasing his game was if it wasn’t also lethal as all get out.

But the “effortless” and “every shot in the book” and attacking “Fed express” monikers would never have attached themselves to him if he didn’t have a “type” of game - attacking / creative / varied / all court - that was exceedingly fun to watch for many tennis fans.

i just want someone can have good performance consistently. it is ridiculous that when you have expectation of having a good game against the supreme boring djoker, everyone just pressed the self-destruction button and lost easily.

No, "aesthetically pleasing" was never a factor in his popularity, @Federev did not follow Tennis live in 2000s, he took a break after the 1990s due to boredom and restarted in 2012 as he many times said, so he is speaking from the accounts of authors like David Foster Wallace. However we fans know globally Federer's game was not purely beauty centric in 2000s.

He built his legend because of sheer dominance and that only was the reason for his popularity, the started winning slams with such speed and destroying his rivals that after double bageling of Hewitt in 2004 first time media was saying this guy is probably the greatest of all time. Here on he went on winning and winning and winning and we were all praising him, we all knew he would cross Pete's records. The Laureus Awards and recognition came to Roger because year after year he was super dominant. 4-5 wimbledons in a row, 5 USOs in a row, all that was never seen before. It is probably Borg like when he won Ws and FOs in row for years. I have no idea about Borg's era but I could only imagine it would have been the same.

Pretty Backhand/Ballerina Movement is talked by non tennis fans, actual fans were impressed on how he could dominant Roddick/Hewitt/Safin with ease and that difference in talent levels between players is what built Roger's legacy...... not freaking ballerina/backhand.

This is how I am with the NBA. Don’t think anyone will ever come close to my favorite ever player and idol, Steph Curry.

I just don't see why the last line follows from what you said about some of the players. To my mind, whether a player is likely to break records is absolutely irrelevant (at best) to the question of whether the player is fun to root for. I say at best, because if anything I'm more likely not to cheer for a player if they are going to win all the time. But, as @Kralingen pointed out, you can enjoy cheering for Manchester City and Paris Saint Germain if you like.

I do feel Man City are only hated due to jealousy. Their fans are cool but ultimately football fans get envious when they got taken over, bought titles and now are dominating.

They're hated, rightly, because they are a moneybags team who have bought domination, and using oil money at that. That's not jealousy, it's dislike of money having too much influence in sport. It makes them a hateworthy team, much as PSG are.

By the way, I was a student in Manchester back in the day. I went to three or four games at Maine Road. Quite liked Man City back when they were a mid-table (at best) team. Would have been happy for them to have a bit of success. Absolutely don't want them to have an oligarch buy them titles using oil money.

Anyway, given your username, we clearly have very different value systems, so probably best just to agree to disagree. Knock yourself out always supporting dominant players/teams if that's what you want to do.

Yes, I do think that many find it easier to support dominant teams whose wealth is "organic" (e.g. they have money because they've got a large fan base, because they're from a big city, and have had significant levels of historical success). To my mind, that makes it slightly easier to root for such teams, but I still prefer them not to be too dominant. Then again, I don't think that teams with organic wealth are able to dominate as much as teams with oligarchic backing and especially with oil wealth. At least not in England (*). Man City are going to roll to their fourth straight title and that will be the first time in history that any team has won four straight English leagues. They could easily go on to get seven or eight titles in a row. It's actually hard to see anyone stopping them unless another oligarch-backed team such as Newcastle eventually manages to overhaul them.

* France, too, I think. But the situation's a bit different in Spain and Germany, where top teams were always able to dominate much more completely, even before the advent of the oligarch team.
 
i am a fan of competitive tennis. W23 final was first slam worth watching since 22 AO which had a bit of intrigue. AO/RG/USO dud finals kill my interest, no point watching when result is NID.

Why are the best players or teams praised by people? Breaking records or going far is important because it inspires people in a positive way, gives them good feeling. That is important as well, plus we like to watch history being created, that is why everyone likes a winner. It is just human mentality.

Of course one could also cheer lesser player for what bring to the table, like someone might be a fan of Kyrgios because he bring a rapper like trash talking casual personality which people like, someone might like Hewitt/David Ferrer for their tenacity, someone might even like a sportsman/woman for their looks and personality, someone could like Gael Monfils for his athleticism and energy on the court, there are even fans of Murray for his always wanna compete desire..... so many reasons to support many people

But when it comes to the Slams race everyone has their own camps, for a reason because people connect to certain athletes in some ways, so they join those camps in the Slams Race. So domination does matter @Kralingen Everybody likes a winner, nobody likes a loser forever unless that person's parents/someone who is a fan of that person in a devoted way. I choose whom to cheer for based on their playing style, as well as the sense I get from their on-court demeanor of their personality. How successful they are is basically irrelevant to that - of course, it's hard to cheer for a player who always loses early, but it's also hard to cheer for a player who always wins (that's very boring). I don't have what you call the "human mentality" that prefers "winners" to "losers" and that wants records to be broken and "see history being created." I find it much more interesting when someone wins his first slam than when someone wins his 22nd slam.

Couldn't care less about records, and wish that nobody dominated much, as I prefer the tour to be more competitive and less top-heavy, as it was in the past. I think that the slam race has been bad for tennis and hope that there is no slam race in the next generation. Some statistics fans will not follow tennis any longer if that happens, but that's a good thing.

My favorite player was Stefan Edberg.

Of the big three, I generally liked Federer and Djokovic a fair (e.g. moderate) amount and rather disliked Nadal. Between Federer and Djokovic, I usually found myself rooting for the one who had been less successful recently, on the grounds stated above that I like a more competitive and less hierarchical tour. Thus I cheered for Djokovic against Federer at the 2010 US Open and for Federer against Djokovic at the 2019 Wimbledon.

In recent years, I have gone off Djokovic, because I very much dislike his attitude to the Covid vaccine and to Covid more generally. (Not going to debate this, simply stating it as an account of my preferences). Were Federer still around, I would always cheer for him against Djokovic going forwards.

So many inaccuracies in this post. I'm not even a fan of any of these players but most of your claims are either biased or plain wrong.
 
Any given day novak has all the numbers and there is no denying stats are all supporting novak.
But if you take each and every slam victories of big 3 rafa case is unmatched.
Out of 22 slams he won 50% of them by defeating fedrer and novak in finals. 11 final win against fed and novak.
No need for rafa fans to change loyality.
