Are you allergic to overgrips?

I don't know if it is just me or what.

I use overgrip. Overtime, my skin at the thumb and index finger got very rough and at times there was a cleavage in my finger like a deep cut. It hurts like hell. Have any of you had this kind of problems with the overgrips? I think I am allergic to some chemicals in the overgrips. One of my buddies have this problem too. The worst case was when I was using Wilson Pro white overgrips. The blue tourna overgrip is better but it is not durable. A few days ago, I used Yonex overgrip and the problem got worse.

People, please let us know if you have had allergic reaction to any of the overgrips.

Thanks!

Whoa, allergic reactions eh... That's strange. I can't say I've had it before. What I suggest is to give yourself a couple days to let it get better first. Then, head out and try a racquet that doesn't have the overgrip. If you're okay, try using the overgrip again. If you get the same problem, then it might actually be an allergic reaction. Perhaps it's also just chafing your skin because of the way you might be playing some shots?

Anyhow, I hope that you figure it out and that it gets better.

sorry, ive never heard of this before, maybe you need either a really dry overgrip, or a really tacky (sticky) overgrip. thats the best i can give you.

u should pbb use lotion and see if ur using the right grip... cuz wat it sounds like to me is u have callouses and ur just making it worse.

I've never heard of it, but I guess it's possible.
If so, use a different overgrip. All the overgrips have very different chemical composition. If you're allergic to one, chances are you won't be allergic to another.
Wilson Pro and Yonex overgrips are the same thing.

I think that is not a allergic reaction but more like a CALLUS. Because I have the same problem with the thumb and the index dinger got very hard, dry and rough and the cleavage in the middle of your thumb cut too deep and skin dryout You could try to put lotion to keep it moist, that way it could be a little better. If I don't play tennis for week, then the skin will go back to normal but as soon as I hit again, the skin getting hard again.

And about overgrips. I try Yonex Supergrap, Wilson White over grip, and Prince Duratred or Duratac all have the same problem. So, i usually put some lotion to help the skin moist and help the healing better. Rather than that, I get used to it.

Odd yes, but if Tourna worked for you, use Tourna 2, its more durable and more tacky. That Wilson stuff is made in China anyway so probably has lead paint in it too.

Doesn't sound like an allergic reaction from your description. More likely a callous and dry skin from the friction. This is quite painful and won't heal unless you quit playing tennis for awhile. The reason Tourna grip feels better is because it is cushioned and gentler on the skin. The Wilson and Yonex grip really grab the skin and the friction actually pulls on the skin and never lets it heal.

I actually do have an allergic reaction to the white Wilson overgrip. My skin gets red and then vessicles (clear bubbles on the skin) appear. It was really painful and the treatment was a topical steroid cream which I had to wear under a glove at night for one week.

Your treatment is probably laying off tennis for a while and treat the cut with Neosporin.

i've never had a reaction to overgrip, but my hands break out if i use leather grips.

let the joking commence!

the only overgrip im allergic 2
is that babolat symbio =[

smells like ....
after i took that off my racket stunk for a while had to replace the replacement grip just to get rid of it

Heh, that's not an allergic reaction, it's your skin. Your skin isn't moisturized. While you're playing tennis, having dry skin, will start cutting it slowly. It's the friction of the handle that usually causes blisters and such. But in your case, it's a cut from dry skin. Try to put on lotion before you play tennis so that your hand is moisturized. Mines just healed this week and I'm ready to play tennis again.

this happens to me a lot, i think ill have to wear bandits but i mean i dont think it hurts that bad.. its anoying but i mean i played 2 entire sets with it and still did good..

Not Surprized.

In the medical world it is quite common for people to be allergic to surgical gloves which contain silicone products. They have to wear other gloves free of any silicone ingredients.

Now, I am not sure that Wilson and yonex overgrips contain any silicone, but again, it does not surprise me that you r hands a re getting irritated.

As others have commented, it sounds like your problem may be a case of dry skin which is being exacerbated by friction between your hand and the grip. Lotion will of course help this, but if you don't let the skin heal complete, it will continue to occur.

If tournagrip works for you, I would stick with that. I suspect Yonex and Wilson grips come from the same factory, both are mad in Indonesia and to me have no noticeable differences between them other than the slight difference in thickness.

Hope you heal up, it sounds painful.
