Argentina should take it, Monaco should be able to beat Monfils and Nalbandian should pick up two wins off Llorda and Monfils.

Why do you think Monaco is likely to beat Monfils? I dont know anything about their history but I wouldnt favor Monaco over Monfils on any surface, as much as I cant stand Monfils's playing style.

The best chance for Argentina to win is for Monaco to beat Llodra, and Nalbandian to win both his singles.

I was looking for a thread to post- does anyone know what happened to Julien Benneteau? To me, in that match with Spain, he was clearly the best French player. Has he been injured, and if not does anyone know why he was dropped?

I agree about Nalby, but I'm not sure about Monaco. I know it's not the same surface, but Monaco was knocked out in the first round of US Open, while Monfils made it to the ?quarterfinals? PLUS ... I remember seeing Juan lose in this very arena ?within the year?

Llodra warming up, breaks back 4 all
then holds 5-4

Captain Forget is very intense, gets right in his team's face on changeovers.

Captain Vazquez, otoh, seems the picture of calm, except in his enthusiasm from the bench for his player on court.

It's amazing how much weaker the Argentine team looks without Delpo in it.

Disappointingly weak line ups, IMO. Think I want Serbia to win the DV this year.

i would prefer gasquet too, but monfils is able to metamorphose is attitude and his aggressiveness in DC
anyway the beggining of is match seems to demonstrate that the captain forget was right ! :)

don't know the reason gasquet not playing today, but monfils is one of those players who seems to do better with on-court coaching, and he takes the third set 6-4

I think one of the reasons is his really bad H2H against Nalbandian (7-0) - although these were mostly matches from years back, but Nalbandian just a bad match-up. He's a good and loyal practice partner for the team though.

Yes he's injured. So is Tsonga...

Benneteau injured his wrist against Robredo I think at the USO.

So glad to see Mika and Gael win their first rubber in this SF. Too bad I couldn't watch the matches. Allez les Bleus!

They seem to enjoy themselves so much together. Great to see.

Hopefully, you'll be able to see the doubles and/or the reverse singles this weekend. There's an article on the DC website that starts out ...

"France takes commanding lead in Lyon
It was a stunning start to the semifinal weekend for France as the home side took on Argentina in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas.

At the start of the weekend the French captain Guy Forget would have been hoping to sweep the first day’s singles. He certainly would not have been expecting it, but after five hours and 57 minutes of play, hopes were brought to realisation. France took a 2-0 lead over Argentina and is one rubber away from a place in the final.

“I’ve seen it all in Davis Cup throughout the years, you don’t expect anything because anything can happen,” Forget said. “All the matches are always crucial and all the guys always give their best in this competition, more than any other tournament.

“We have seen two great matches and I am relieved tonight that we are at 2-0 but it’s still a long way to go and things can turn around really quickly and I want to make sure that this is not going to happen.

“Tonight we are going to focus on the match that we are going to play tomorrow and we don’t want to think about celebrating or having fun. There’s no fun yet, it’s best of five matches and we won the first two. We only have one more match to win.” . . .

Schwank/Zeballos did well at the USO, making it into the SF as a dubs team, so they should play well together, unless Vazquez makes a last-minute change. ..... Not sure how Llodra/Clement are as a team ???

If only Julien had not injured his arm (I saw him wearing a brace courtside on TV), it would have been an almost certain win for France when he is paird with Llodra; but Ckement is no slouch at doubles either, so tonight's match is going to be really a nail biter; haven't seen the Argentine pair play before; are they good?

Like Llodra and Benneteau, they are primrily singles players, but just a couple weeks ago, at the US Open, they beat the no. 5 doubles seeds (Kubot/Marach) for a spot in the semifinals, which they then lost to Bopanna/Qureshi, the eventual runners-up.

I doubt that they're as experienced together as are Benneteau and Llodra, but I'm pretty sure they'll give Llodra/Clement a run for their money ....... However, those indoor arenas are definitely an advantage for the home team ... Still I believe it should be a fun match to watch.

Has France been in the Finals of the Davis Cup previously, do you know?

monfils wins in 4 vs nalby with 27 aces ( the sets weren't that long either ) ?

Monfils did play VERY well, maybe the best I've seen him play, and I was VERY surprised to see Nalbandian lose his serve 6 times! :o I honestly believe that Forget helped Monfils win with his intense coaching on changeovers.

Nalby was bothered by the crowd a couple times, but the bottom line was that he just made too many unforced errors. PLUS he gave me a scare (because of his hip history) when he dove for a passer and ended up on the floor.

maybe monfils should hire forget as is full time coach. he always seems to play well in the DC. FYI highlights are up on youtube

Llodra/Clement won Wimbledon once (2007) - they beat the Bryans too. and were once finalist at the AO. So their odds to win this match is very good. I hope they win the doubles. Allez.

to be honest, I'm not sure how much that would help, meaning if rasheed could coach on-court, he might do gael as much good ..... gael really showed off his skills today, particularly amazing on the retrieval, causing David to try ever more for the lines and make more mistakes. IOW, his baseline skills are fabulous, but he's prone to losing focus at crucial times. The in-game coaching seems to keep him better focused.

According to wikipedia, France won in 2001 and were runners up in 2002; so of late they did not seem to be very successful

It's amazing to watch Monfils in a Davis cup setting (no pushing, no unecessary "brainfart" trickshots at crucial moments... etc etc) strictly business.

Of course, the fact that he wasn't just playing for himself has something to do with it (as well as Guy-F being a truly fabulous coach

Unfortunately (and fortunately for France :)) I think it's the team 'effect', it makes you more responsible. In single... Gael being Gael over and over again.

As much as I love Nalby, hope to see France vs Serbia.

exciting so far. zeballos' serve was broken, then he returned the favor with a bh dtl on the line, etc., breaking clemen's serve, now on serve w/schwank serving 3-4

whew!!! I was thinking Llodra was making a lot of the kill shots ... and he did it again after that great exchange all four at the net, breaking schwank's serve 2-0

great pickup by zeballos to break clement's serve 1-2

zeb's got a good serve. hope he can hold it this time! :D

clement ruining zeb's serve to take france to set point.
zeb saves it with the lefty canopener.
cc kill shot by mika to take the second set for france 7-5
naturally, the entire place was bedlam during zeb's serve ... but that's davis cup! :)

Mika, NOT the chair umpire, was the one who called for quiet during Eddy's serve, especially on BP ... and Eddy lost it, not surprisingly 2-4

young argies hanging in pretty well, but veteran frenchies just a little too skilled and experienced for them today
