Serena Williams: hamstring's tight, father's lips loose

By HOWARD FENDRICH, AP Tennis Writer
June 25, 2007

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Perhaps Serena Williams' dad was simply trying to offer an explanation for her slow start at Wimbledon.

In the process, he might have given her next opponent a bit of a scouting report.

Either way, Williams was far from her best early in her first-round match at the All England Club on Monday, and afterward said she has a tight hamstring. Still, the two-time Wimbledon champion turned things around quite quickly and reeled off the final nine games to beat Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain 7-5, 6-0.

"It's good she got through the match, but she looks like she's playing a little hurt. I don't think she should be playing. I told her she shouldn't," her father and coach, Richard, said after watching the match.

Then, with a laugh, he added: "You'll have to ask her about what the injury is or I might lose my job for talking."

Asked about it, the No. 7-seeded Williams acknowledged the hamstring problem -- even though she said over the weekend she felt healthy.

"Honestly, I did feel a little limited. But I think if things had been tougher, I would have fought through it," she said after advancing to a second-round match against Alicia Molik of Australia. "It's getting better -- better than it was a couple of days ago. Flared up, but it's getting better now, slowly but surely."

And she wasn't upset that her father mentioned to reporters that she isn't 100 percent fit.

"I'll probably let it slide this time," she said.

Williams didn't think the leg problem affected her serve, even though she finished with six double-faults, a total she figured is "more than I hit in a tournament, normally."

There were other problems, including 20 unforced errors, four more than her opponent.

At 4-4 in the first set, Williams sailed a backhand long, then a forehand long, getting broken. That allowed the 57th-ranked Dominguez Lino to serve for the set. But she missed a backhand into the net, then another long, and Williams hit a swinging volley to break back and make it 5-5.

The American didn't lose a game the rest of the way and compiled a 9-1 edge in winners during the second set.

"I raised my game on some points, which I think was the big difference," Williams said. "Out of a 10, I was probably at a 2, maybe."

That was enough for the eight-time major champion to beat Dominguez Lino, who owns one career Grand Slam match victory.

How much of an outsider is she? While Williams sported a made-for-her outfit with her multimillion-dollar endorser's logo, Dominguez Lino was wearing temporary sponsor patches that were stuck to her shirt. During one changeover, Dominguez Lino lifted one off and switched it from her front to her sleeve.

Williams also is playing at Wimbledon with a gold-inlaid racket provided by another sponsor. Whether that made a difference in her play, it certainly did in her demeanor.

"I kept making errors. I was just really frustrated at that point. I wanted to smash my racket," she said. "But seeing that it's gold, I can't."

Wow, a professional athlete with a sore hamstring? Must be a clever rse in case she loses... Those evil, arrogant, lying, race baiting Williams...

/sarcasm

Excuses excuses. Talk bit sh#t when they win and then come up with excuses for playing ugly sloppy tennis. Venus is on right now and her footwork looks as sloppy as Serena. What a way to louse up a classy place.

She should just suck it up, like a man.
this made me laugh out loud, so thanks.

i don't know if she's hampered by it or not. she tends to play error-filled tennis more often than not, injuries notwithstanding. but i found all the clowns on espn gushing all over the "story" completely unnecessary. shriver, carillo, the idiot fowler . . . all adding their 2 cents (as if they know anything). the cherry on the cake was them referring to it as "hamstring-gate." dipsh*ts.

And you wonder why I hate the Williams brothers so much. Oh my God, did I begin a sentence with "and"?

you did. absolutely shameful. get off this board. you and your careless grammar. starting a sentence with a conjunction, indeed!

he talks down to her opponent even when he wins the match lol... only 2 out of 10? please

then he contradict hirself, he felt fine over the weekend, but after todays match he had hamstring problems flaring up a couple days ago which would hmmm saturday and sunday?

seriously you wonder why they are not liked by anyone

so I must ask why you like them so much ballboy? do you find him attractive? do you like his one dimensional error finess-less filled game? do you like his respectfulness and amazing attitude and peronality?

8-time Grand Slam winner. She doesn't need an excuse against a nobody! And they're women, not men, not brothers, not monkeys. Get some class!

Wow, so many threads on the Williams sisters. Don't understand why because y'all don't like them.
Give these girls a break and plus they don't give a #### about no one on this forum(including me), of the other girls in wta because(williams) they keep winning and that's what irritating y'all.(they are arrogant and still winning).

Let me ask you a question krz: Why is an (ostensibly) grown man doing such childish things referring to a woman as a man? Out of valid arguments? Because calling someone disrespectful, and then proceeding to make ad hominems about them, is what we call hypocrisy. Makes me wonder about the maturity of some of the posters here.

I've never mentioned Venus in my posts. Yet you somehow make the assumption that I like both of them. It's funny. I often find that the people with the most bitter, rabid dislike for the Williams sisters often group them together, even when they shouldn't be in that circumstance. Almost like a predetermined result of dislike.

Other women's players, however, have shown more blatant examples of gamesmanship, arrogance, allofness, and outright cheating. Yet you don't devote any of your time to them. Funny.

Several salient points here. First of all, they are two different individuals, not one! and the truth is, everyone's else "flaws" get explained away. But, and I repeat, they are not hypocritical or racist. LOL!

The William Sisters are awesome. I doubt they are making up this injury. Hopefully it doesn't get worse.

It appears to be the right hamstring. She was favoring it yesterday. Trying not to, but if you look closely, you can see it. And yes, they are awesome!

I'm starting to think that book she brings on the court is a decision tree for excuses.

-Get broken early = You where still asleep.
-Win in 3 sets = You played at 10%, and your opponent played amazing.
-Lose in 3 sets = You played a 2%, and your opponent played like s--t.
-Lose in 2 sets = You played at 1%, and you were hungover, with a hamstring injury.
-Win in 2 sets = Who was that girl?

Of course she has her excuse ready. She sees Justine waiting in the quarters. She realizes Justine not only thrased her on clay at the French, but would have thrased her on hard courts in their match earlier the year had Justine not choked serving it out. So the inevitable awaits, and she has her excuse already planned for the inevitable quarterfinal loss to Justine. That is unless she wimps out and loses before it comes to that.

awesome? how about classless, unsportsmanlike whiners

- with 13 Singles grand slams,
- 6 doubles grandslams (including a career doubles golden slam - doubles titles at the 4 Grandslams and an olympic gold in doubles),
- 1 year end WTA championship titles,
- 4 Mixed doubles grandslam titles

Like Serena did to her in 2003...hhhhhhhaaaaaaa

I think there are reasons why her dad and herself are defensive about stuff.

He said yesterday - weird stuff keeps happening to us.

What happened? The chair umpire (Sandra de Jenken from France) suggested to Alicia Molik that she challenge a call using Hawk Eye!

Tell me, why would the family believe it is not a racial thing?

I am sorry, but first it was the crowd at Indian Wells, and now it is an umpire suggesting to her opponent a strategy to win a point.

It get so OLD hearing people pull the race card...First shoot off about being the best in the world, then brag about all the titles and slam wins, then sit back and complain that people root against you...go figure

Then it's back to the conspiracy theory, maybe it's not race, maybe some people just don't like rude obnoxious sourpuss losers! Period, done, end of class the conspiracy theorists are dismissed!

Let's try this again. Serena needs to lose some more weight to play her best against the top players. And- mark her word--when she's playing her best--no one can beat her!

that's better....

There are no excuses. It was a real concern. Here it is taped while she was practicing before the championships

Hopefully Henin will send her packing. She looked fine today in the thrashing she gave her opponent so no excuses later on.

This thread is silly. Serena has often downplayed injuries and lack of fitness before matches she's ended up losing (Wimbledon 05, AO 06) to bolster her confidence. Yet now people think she's making up nonexistant injuries to have an excuse ready? In a tournament where she has a good chance of winning? Ridiculous.
