Poor Federer, not even in Top 5.

Poor Federer, not even in Top 5.

Going behind in slams has cost Federer a lot.

People have forgotten his 2000s years, ATP Finals, some longevity records which he created, today the same media is marketing Court & Novak is a different way.

Since we‘re counting pre-Open Era slams, whats the list if we incluce tennis tournaments since tennis was created?

Incredible how we're considering both Pro Slams and Amateur Slams. Since they both happened at the same time, it feels like cheating to allow both. But I have a ton of respect for Rosewall and I think he gets a lot of flak despite being just as good as Laver (as shown by their records on the Pro tour).

As a Margaret Court's fan (I grew up watching her impeccable game and even traveled to Australia back in the 1960s and 1970s to witness live her matches against the legendaries Evonne Googalong Cawley, Billie Jean King and María Bueno) I find this thread to be a celebration of tennis. Both Court and Djokovic are tennis geniuses that deserve the utterly most respect.

Oh boy, I miss the 1960s and 1970s. The subtle tactics, the sophisticated touch, the electricity of the game... everything was better back then. These Next Genners are all useless. Wooden racquets enhanced intelligence, point construction and creativity over brainless power-hitting.

Court vs. Billie Jean King, Wimbledon 1970 final, arguably the greatest women's match in tennis history. The peak of women's tennis right here, gentlemen.

You are a lot older than I thought, then. I thought you were probably in your late 20s, maybe early 30s by now.

Great sarcasm. I almost believed it but then checked your age which you list as 32.

Rosewall and laver never won that number, people always double count no of majors from same year
Some of the pro "majors" were not regarded as majors at the time, only in retrospect years after the fact.

Many of the greatest old pro tourneys are not regarded as old pro majors today but were at the time.

Go figure.

Not even close to reality. She lacked the ability to win the Grand Slam, and like all others who failed to achieve that, they are not the greatest in the sport.

OP: Djokovic tied Court in the majors count, but she won the Grand SLam, so she--unlike Djokovic--is among the true GOAT players.
Who is then your GOAT on the men’s side? Laver?

59 slams as per media

Court is a nobody today, she should be thankful to Djokovic and Serena for bringing her into the limelight.

Stop glorifying oldies at the sake of current players.

That is because there is an agenda against her for tennis-unrelated reasons. If BJK had Court’s stats we wouldn’t hear the end of it.

Court is a legend of the sport, and never needed Serena or Djokovic to "make" her relevant, as she was that long before Serena or Djokovic were born, like any who won the Grand Slam, the zenith of all tennis achievements.
Nobody cares about this

My generation never knew of court, she played like almost 20 years before we were all born, so Djokovic and Serena did court a favor. Heck Djokovic himself was born like 15 years after Court's time. Don't say she never needed, all the people who watched her live are dead, we fans who are active and alive we rule, we decide the narrative....Don't shove Court down our throats.

Court goes first on the list because she made the record first. Djokovic is second:

1-Court
Djokovic

etc.

My generation never knew of court,

I do not know what generation you are a part of, but you cannot speak for all within it, or their awareness--if they are tennis fans--of its most significant history. The reason anyone who ever won the Grand Slam is still recorded and discussed today is due to its recognized, celebrated status, whether some are ignorant of that fact. The official history of the sport does not begin with Federer or Sampras' generations, and if it did, no one would care, as it would make the sport appear to be some fly-by-night thing only recently created (the lesson certain NBA "fans" had to be taught when they foolishly think the league and its history started with Bryant, Shaq or Jordan's generations).

all the people who watched her live are dead

Nonsense, and your view of time and generations is faulty in the extreme.

History will always matter, and sorry, but Djokovic, Serena, Federer, Nadal, and others who failed to win the Grand Slam are not GOAT players, but fight for the Best of the Rest category on the majors count list.

Djokovic is the GOAT now, sorry but Court and Laver are not relevant today.

Athletes always do get better, someone 70 years ago who played some limited competition and amassed CYGS cannot be rated on par with guys who are fighting players from 200 countries.

Laver and Court had their time, now it is the time for others to enjoy the spotlight. Pre open era does not matter anymore, thats why there is this distinction between open era and pre open era.

Djokovic is not a GOAT player. He's merely tied in majors count, and the one he's tied with will always be far above him because she won the Grand Slam. That is the historical record.

Tennis is one history, or it is all irrelevant, and will be cherry picked at any year or moment. Your statement is not how historians record the life and achievements of a sport.

By the way, Laver won his second Grand Slam in the open era (1969), similarly to Court, who won hers in 1970. They are among the very few GOAT players, while those who lacked the supreme dominance, talent and court understanding (IOW, those who could not win the Grand Slam), fight for some listing on the Best of the Rest list.

Laver and Court played tennis at a time when very few countries played tennis seriously ....their records are not comparable to Djokovic. The old players are not as good as current players levelwise...... no person 5'7 like Laver can win Slams now.
