Asics Gel Resolution 8

Just switched over to the GR8 from the Vapor X - was not at all impressed with the lacing system and upper on the Vapor X compared to how good the 9.5 was. I went with the same size (EU44). Playing on clay, the laces became quite stiff and would not slide much through the eyelets any longer. Perhaps it's because the angle of the eyelet is more parallel to the ground on the VX compared to the V9.5 which seemed to match the curve of the tongue & foot. GR8 is comfortable so far and really impressed with the stability. Very happy with the purchase.

One question though - have any of you clay court players noticed that the GR8 seems to have a much deeper herringbone pattern on the sole than the Vapors or other clay shoes you've bought? When I am moving around, I actually hear "squeaks" from the shoes similar to what you would hear on a hard court, as the treads seem to penetrate right through the top soil and touch the hard base layers. Its a bit more difficult to slide properly as a consequence.

I always felt like my foot was more "in" the GR series and more "on top" of the SS series. The best of both worlds is the Court FF/2 but $$$ and cushioning isn't quite as good as GR or quite as light as SS.

When you watch Monfils in slow motion right now against Djoko, you understand why the Resolution 8 is the best tennis shoe EVER. :sneaky:

How does this shoe compare to Novak's FF 2 shoes ?? weight seem to be very similar. but with that Flyte foam in FF, it seem to have better cushioning than this gel res 8... so does that make FF 2 shoes far superior ?

Gel Res 8 also has Flyte Foam and I find them more comfortable than FF2.

which has more responsive superior cushioning ? FF2 or Gel res 8 ? and do you think addition of this Flyte Foam tech has really added more responsiveness to their Gel cushioning they had in the past ? Thanks

After reading one of the latest reviews (and one from the women's) I decided to cut out the straps and I actually like them way more. the tops of my feet were killing me before.

IMO FF2 cushioning slightly better. GR8 is more responsive - and more breathable, more fitted, and easier to put on.

Yes I did. Those were the two shoes I liked the most and ultimately decided between. The cage 4s had more of a ‘slipper-like’ or cushioned feel. I imagine the Nike’s break in is super quick. The gel res 8s felt stiffer/more structured and slightly lower profile. The biggest difference was stability on the outside of the foot. I simulated cuts/changes in direction and the Cage 4s had more tendency to let the foot roll or rock to the outside. The Nike’s felt lighter and more comfortable, but the stability issue and my history of being pleased with the gel resolution pushed me in that direction
Agreed, I've been playing with the resolution 8 and just tried on the vapor cage 4 yesterday. Even just standing or walking around the vapor cage had a tendency to let my foot roll to the outside, which wasn't promising. Felt really comfortable though.

i had no luck with the asics line
the novac upper was too thick rigid it would fold in on itself when moving quickly. so annoying.
and the res 8. heel slippage. even on a 1/2 size small. NOT IMPRESSED WITH THIS LINE.
and i love my asics running shoes. oh well. the heel slippage is inexcusable

Strictly NO HEEL SLIPPAGE for me with R7 and R8. ;)

Finally my feet prefer the Resolution 7 than the 8... The 8 is fantastic but not for me... I bought a second pair of R7.
PM if interested for my R8 at great price (played 1h30 - size 46).

To those that have worn both the Court FF2 and GR8s did you wear the same size for both? I’ve worn many iterations of the GRs and other ASICS and have always worn a size 11.5. However when I went to the court FF2 I had to go down a half size to an 11.

To avoid heel slippage, use cotton socks. No polyester. Or at least 70% cotton in the composition. Your foot will be much more locked.

This is super useful for any type of foot slippage. It won't necessarily solve a genuine fit issue, but will definitely decrease slipping in shoe. Took me a long search of socks to figure this out. UnderArmour Charged Cotton is my favorite.

Yes. For me, same size was fine.

There is a little pocket inside the tongue to put the lace! So cool!! :D (y)
Huh? I think I know what you are talking about, on the 8 there is a little pocket under the logo on the tongue, however I don’t know what it’s for other than pulling it up.

i feel that the outsole is wearing down a lot faster than the 7s.... glad these still have a 6 month durability guarantee
I share this experience. Worse than the GR7. Still the best tennis shoe I have used. Love it.

But because I gave up on Vapor Xs due to their abysmal durability, and was hoping for the famous GR-durability, I am quite disapointed.

Are the clay and all court versions different in any way other than the outsole pattern? Perhaps a different rubber type or hardness?

I'll be playing on both clay and concrete. The potential problem with the clay version is that it could be too sticky and wear out faster on concrete, while the all court could be too slippery on clay. (Although I've played on clay with the GR7 all court and it was fine.)

@Nogo I would advise you to never use clay-court shoes on hard courts. They will wear down super fast. It's fine to use hard court/all court shoes on clay though. I've found it is totally worth it to have clay shoes for clay courts and hard court shoes for hard courts.

I've found clay shoes can last years if only used on clay courts. The upper of the shoe can wear out, but the outsole will still look like new. I have GR7's with both hard and clay-specific outsoles and recommend them both.

Anyone else found the midsole structural durability/resilience to be lacking? I only got about 2 months of playability (even while alternating with a second pair of GR8's) before the midsole has become mushy/sloppy. Disappointing given how pricey they are!

Possibly the tooling of the Flytefoam?

I'm looking for the first shoes for tennis and I watched reviews, and it has been said that this Asics Resolution 8 are one of the best now a days.

I'm hesitating in 3 models - the Asics R8, the Asics FF 2 and Adidas Adizero 2.0

I want to focus more on stability rather than speed. I prioritize footwork to get a good forehand/backhand. I have quite some speed

Do you have some feedback you can give ?

The Gel resolution is the most stable of these 3. It weighs more, which means more stability however it isn’t too heavy, and is overall a great shoe.

Thank you, I think the R8 is a good all around choice. I have to say adidas in terms of design is better, but this asics model are on pair.

I don’t really know shoes very well. Or feet. But since getting back into tennis a year ago, I’ve tried 3 hardcourt shoes:

* New Balance 696 - About a half size small. Very tight on the top of my foot and bottom of my feet were tired after court time.
* Asics Gel Resolution 7 - Wow. Planned to replace my NBs with a similar value shoe, but tried on these without noticing the price jump, and the comfort was night-and-day. Unfortunate for my wallet, I knew instantly they were worth the extra $. Extremely comfortable over the past 6 months, and the outsoles have held up great. My feet were never tired after play.
* Adidas Adizero Ubersonic 3 - Recently picked up a pair on sale. Like the look, runs a little tight. Unfortunately, my feet are tired after just an hour.

Luckily my Asics GR7 still have life in them. I’ll keep wearing those. And maybe a little break-in period on the Adidas will help.

I’m inclined to go ahead and pick up another pair of GR7s if they go on deep clearance, though I do think the 8’s look better.

The 8’a have softer and better cushioning imo, ventilation has improved, however I don’t like the thin laces.

Completely agree !

@zinzan8 I had the Gel Res 7 two years ago and they lasted me very long. After 8 months using them, which is quite long for me as an agressive mover (I wore lots of different tennis shoes after 3 or 4 months), I had to change them not because of the outsole was balded/holed as usual with other tennis shoes but because in these they started to become slippery. I had some unpredictable slip on hard court so I had to change them. Also the cushioning was lacking at the end and I had some knee issues.

But honestly the shoes were not so worn, they looked barely used. It was the first time cause I was used to my old Gel Solution Speed (first generations) which I loved but after sliding a lot on hard court they were completely balded and the upper holed and loose.

Now with the Gel Res 8 I prefer the overall comfort of the shoes, the fact that they are softer, less stiff, particularly the outsole that's nice, I can bend my foot better, feel more connected with the shoe and no longer having this heel slippage issues I also had with the Gel Res 7.

I can't comment on the durability yet but after 10+ hours using them they mold my foot better and I enjoy wearing them. There is lot of cushioning, maybe too much for my light weight (I don't feel as connected with the ground as I would like to particularly in the forefoot area where I generally love being lower to the ground) but definitely a good shoe. No sign of wear or balding yet. [emoji106][emoji106]

I picked up the GR8. Last 3 shoes...Vapor X, Ubersonic 2, Sole Boost. First Asics shoe since the GR2 years ago. I remember liking the shoe but the sole became a slick and I found myself losing my footing. Stopped wearing them with the upper in great condition. Fast forward to the GR8...man this upper is weird. Been wearing em around the house and they're making a popping sound on both shoes with every step [emoji45] ... incredibly annoying. They feel supportive, not too heavy and low enough to the ground to play quick. I just hope this popping goes away.

Can you slide easily in brand new GR8s?

Just laced using the the last eyelet and the clicking is gone. Curious to see breathability in the summer months. Wearing around the house with thin Feetures no-show running socks. Dont think I can wear too thick of a sock with them.

My last shoe before GR8 was the Wilson Rush Pro 3.0 and the outsole was very sticky that I couldn't slide. I had some toe jamming issues on hard stop and had to modify a bit my footwork (more light on my toe) and now I don't slide as much as before.

First the GR8 traction was good and I never had unpredictable sliding issues as my old 8 months used Gel Res 7.

I found that Gel Res 8's traction offers more give than my old Rush Pro 3.0 and that's better for me. I only have 10+ hours in them, mainly trainings and 2 indoors winter tournament matchs in a quite sticky surface (sort of rubber or plastic surface) so I didn't have the opportunity to slide yet.
Moreover I had a quite long period to feel good in my new GR8, before they molded my foot nicely and feel more supple (the entire shoe) maybe cause I'm light weighted player. But less break-in period than the GR7.

@Orion no more popping sound after 2 hours playing as the upper soften quite well [emoji106]

Played a set in GR8 today. It's very stable with good traction. Haven't hit since Feb 11 and hips and thighs are super sore. The rubber upper will take some getting used to. Maybe I didn't have the laces tight enough but the buckling got to me a few times on serve. Wore them with a pair of low cut 80% cotton socks from Finish Line. Deep into the set, after legs started working, I got a lot of squeaks from the GR8. A sign of grippy traction. Toe joint was sore out the shoe. This toebox is gonna take a minute to break-in completely. Starting to suspect it may be be the best design for my foot. Gonna try loosen laces and wear a thicker sock and try with thinner sock and tighten laces.

Bought a pair of Zoom Zeros too big last summer. Surprised at how light they played given how bulky they look. Will probably get a pair of Vapor Cages this summer, decided on GR8 over them.
