ASICS GR5: For wide feet???

I just bought a pair of ASICS GR5 based on the TW Review and customer feedback.

Here's my own findings:

I wear the following tennis shoes:

  1. 9.5 4E (extra wide) New Balance , very good fit
  2. 10 4E (extra wide) Nike City Court, very good fit
  3. 10.5 D (Medium) Nike City Court, too narrow/tight. Won't buy again
  4. 10 2E (Wide) Adidas Bercuda wide, good fit
  5. 10.5 D (Medium) ASICS GR5, not wide enough, but bearable. Won't buy again

Although the ASICS GR5 is a very comfortable shoe (excellent forefoot/midfoot cushioning) I will not be buying it again.

Any suggestion for a similar shoe but a little wider?

Will ASICS make a wider shoe, like a 2E at least?

Not sure how wide your feet are but you might want to check Yonex Durable shoes. They are wider and softer than the Pro version. They are not good fit for narrow feet though.

Just a heads up, we do have an Asics Gel Res 6 WIDE coming in a couple months!

I feel your pain Ricardo. I have 4E flippers too.

I have the best luck with New Balance so I tend to stay with them.

I did try some Babolats a little while ago and while I thought they were comfortable enough I noticed blistering on my little toes after a few sets and eventually blew through the sides of them like I do with most shoes.

I wasn't aware of the others on your list - thank you for the heads up!

Same problem here. I'm a EE but have found the only pair of shoes to fit without blisters/pain are the NB 996 MC (v1). Haven't tried v2 yet.

Tried most of Nike's lineup but was hesitant to go with the vapors or ballistecs due to the price. Shame.

If there are indeed wide GR5's would love to try them. The "normal" GR5's were very snug of the sides of my instep, which is the toughest fit. I also have narrow heels which is makes it even tougher to find decent fitting shoes...

I'm stuck with New Balance as well being a 4E.

Great!!!!

Does it come in 2E or 4E or both?

Does the GR6 has the same cushioning as the GR5?

Thank you...

ricardo,

I think they will be a 4E, but we will need to verify that or let you know as soon as they come in stock!

That's pretty interesting! I'm a 4E as well, and absolutely love the GR5. Once they break in / stretch out they feel moulded to my feet and I love the way they fit.

I think the GR5 will work on wide feet. I just got one this week and they fit my feet well.

The term Wide feet is rather confusing.
There are wide, wider, and widest.

I feel more comfortable in a 4E (extra wide).
I also feel comfortable in a 2E (wide), although I have to get 1/2 size bigger.

GR5, which is Medium, is considered wide by some posters,
that is why I bough it. I have to buy 1 size bigger though (from 9.5 4E to 10.5Medium). Unfortunately, the GR5, even at 1 size bigger than what I normally wear, is not wide enough for me. However, it is expanding the more I use it. I just hope it expands some more.

When the GR6 wide (either 2E or 4E) becomes available, I will definitely buy one at size 10 instead of 10.5.

The GR5 expands a TON. Just keep that in mind as you wear them. After they full stretch out they are not even remotely the same shoe as stock.

If you are a true 4E, like many of us, then you do not care how much a wide shoe stretches. It simply is not going to work. Waiting and hoping a shoe will stretch is not something we look forward to.

People do not realize 2 things: one how many of us there are and two, how thankful we are that New Balance came to our rescue some years back.

It has always hurt to see all the TRUE tennis shoes come out but never available in 4E. Maybe this will be the start of something really great.

Thanks TW for thinking of us.

The GR5 expands a TON.

I did notice that.

The first week I wore them just walking around, I felt a pinch in the outer side, bottom of my pinky toe, both feet.

On the second week, I played tennis in them for 3 hours.
No pain at all during or after playing. The cushioning was excellent (heel and midfoot). This is the most cushioned tennis shoes I ever wore.
I no longer feel any pinching on my pinky toes.

I think it will stop expanding when the pressure is gone, which is good.

Maybe I am not a true 4E. I know my feet are wide but maybe not a 4E.
I think I am just a 2E or between a 2E and 4E.

I have a New Balance 656 9.5 4E and I feel it is too wide.
I also have a Nike City Court 10 4E and it just feel right.
I also have a Prince T4 medium and the width is as good as a Nike City Court 10 4E.

So it depends on the specific shoes.

One thing I learned is this:
It is better to buy wider shoes because it is easier to fix it (wear thicker socks or double up).

Shoes that are too narrow are more difficult to fix.

Interesting point. I guess there are different kinds of wide feet too. Some of us are wider in the toe on while others need wider insteps. New Balance 2e is the only width that doesn't cause pain on the outside of my instep right at the widest part of the foot, which is where the foot stops and toe starts.
If the gr5 does indeed stretch I hope it gives in the right spots as the toe box is easier to stretch than the instep without causing the shoe to come apart.

Yup to get an idea of where / how much my shoes expand take a look at these pics! http://imgur.com/a/2iGC8

I usually wear a size 12 - 12.5 in nike, but I like 11 in the gel res 5 since they stretch out so much in the toe box. (As you can see from where they eventually tore / split open on the side.)

I can only do this kind of wear/tear/damage after 2-3 years.

How long did it take you?

Which shoes lasted you more than 2 months??

Barricade 7s lasted me a bit longer, but were awful on my toes and knees. Absolutely hated the feel of them on foot but they were pretty durable. It's why for the most part I only buy shoes that have a durability warranty.
