Asics Speed - Any Better Light Weight Shoe?

For anyone who wore the Asics Gel Solution Speed 1, did you go with the 2 (or the 3) the next time you purchased shoes or did you move on to a different light weight shoe? If you moved on, what shoe did you go with?

I'm currently wearing the Speed 1 and really like the feel and the lightness. The only other light weight shoe I've tried since wearing the Speed is the KSwiss Big Shot Lite and it didn't feel very good at all...seemed a little hard on the outside of the shoe which caused some pain on the outside portion of my feet.

Just wondering if there are any other light weight shoes out there I should considering before purchasing the Speed 3.

Thanks for any help.

Better is subjective, but you can try the Ubersonics or Feathers.

Vapors too.

I have been switching between shoes quite often, so used all of the above.

I'd highly recommend sticking with the Speed 3s. My take: 1s were a good start, but too narrow/unstable/and the outsole too slippery. 2s were a little wider, more stable, superbly ventilated, just a tremendous shoe. 3s have a slightly odder fit -- somewhere between the 1s and 2s, but still supremely comfy and smooth underfoot, and the stronger material up top does two things: makes the shoe 'hotter' than before, but also more stable when coming to hard stops, whereas the mesh of the 2s were breathable but gave way much more than the 2s. The 3s feel more secure. I poked tiny holes in the mesh atop the 3s to help with the 'hot foot' issue.

I've tried Ubersonics and tried on the Big Shot Lite, used to wear Vapors. For me the Speed 3 remains far and away the best light-but-still-cushioned shoe on the market compared to the other speed/light shoe offerings.

Ubersonic are great shoes.

How did you all find the durability of the Ubersonic shoes? Love the looks of them but T-W seemed to know these shoes heavily as far as durability.

Thanks for that advice. I like price of the 2 but the only color they have left is, well, not the best looking shoe I've ever seen o_O

If you really like the fit of the 1s, the 3s might fit your foot better than the 2s. The 2s were a lot more accommodating for wide feet, and while I favored this, I recall some narrow-footers saying they were unhappy with this change. The 3 is a sort of in-between. Great shoe.

My last shoe was the Solution Speed 2 and found it to be the best light weight shoe out there overall. Now that they're worn out I tried the SS3 and found the weight to be significantly heavier than the 2 and not too far off from the Resolution 6 when I held both shoes in either hand. I opted to go with the Res 6 as the stability and durability was worth the trade off for being a tad bit heavier but not an issue on the court.

I am using the clay version and have been using them for 3 months now. No visible damage yet, but they are in rotation with other shoes, so not enough time on them to give definitive answer.

Nike Vapor Advantage shoes are on sale. Light(and wide enough for my feet), but can't tell you about durability as I put only a few hours on them. My previous shoes were Asics Speed Solution 2, which needed no break-in, light and comfortable. These Nikes' are similar in that aspect.

Diadora's Evo Sped Pro I got them on sale for $44 what a GREAT shoe. Super light, breathable, durable and super comfortable. I can't believe there are no really good reviews of this shoe.

My thoughts exactly.

One poster really likes the Yonex power cushion Aerus. Something like 11.8 ounces... For me, the Speed 2 Clay is the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn.

I may start a thread soon after I get more sessions in with my new shoes, the Wilson Kaos Comp. I've worn them around for two full afternoons, been out on the courts with them for a couple hours of coaching, etc., but won't go really full speed with them until tomorrow night.

So far, these things are feeling insanely good. My last purchase was a pair of Adidas Barricade Classic Bounces, but these are just a hair narrow for me (not too bad with a thin sock) and their soles are a little less firm or solid feeling than I prefer. Even my warm-up jogs wearing the Kaos Comps have felt very good - not at all as though I had new, unfamiliar shoes on my feet. The TW page lists their weight at 12.4 oz. for a size 10.5, but I just put one of my size 12's on my postal scale and it registered at 13.5 oz.

Before the Adidas experiment, I had two pairs of Lotto Raptor IV's - probably the best tennis shoes I've ever owned. The Kaos Comps are rather light, but don't feel at all compromised in terms of quality or support.

Did you order 1/2 larger as recommended by TW, since they think the shoe runs short? How is the width on these? Thanks.

Have owned two pairs of Speed 1's, 3 pairs of Speed 2's. Tried on the 3's last night just for reference. Definitely a snugger fit in the forefoot, little more cushion, 1 ounce heavier obviously. Probably be fine replacement for me from the 2's. To note: The 2's were a tad loose in the forefoot for me, not like I was sliding around but just not locked in.

I want to try those Aerus' though.

The $39.95 Barricade Court comes in at 12.5 ounces. That is 0.4 ounces lighter than the Ubersonic 2. What's to lose?

Asics has shoes that are even lighter than that! They probably won't have as much support and stability as the Solution Speeds, but they are probably good enough for most players.

These [Barricade Court] have really good stability, and even allows to twist in position courtesy of the circular grip under the ball of the foot. Most shoes have that available at higher price range.

No reason to switch from the Speed. I love the shoe.

I'm considering getting either the 2 or the 3... but I notice the odd looking sole.... it's not traditional hearing bone pattern (Barricade/Vapor etc) ....
In my country/city, we play a lot on artificial grass with sand.
Can anyone comment on the grip on this playing surface please?

Nothing really works on these courts, but the asics herringbone is as good as (or better than) Nike and Adidas.

Ok so I've now used my Solution Speed 3 Clay (herringbone) on both plexi and turf and they're great. I've been a long term Barricade guy, half a season of Vapor 9.5 Tour.... now this is my favourite and recommended shoe!

You play with Speed clay shoes on hard court? Isn't that risky?

80% on Sandy turf and 20% hard court. Why would it be risky? This was per the suggestion of Tennis Warehouse

I've owned 1 pair of the Speed 1's, 2 pairs of the Speed 2's, and 1 pair of the Speed 3's (current shoe). The 2's were far and away my favorite model thus far. Great support, breathability, durability, and weight. The 3's are just too cushy and, like many others say, run too hot. Still the best shoe out on the market IMHO, but I wish I could stock up on the Speed 2's!

I found some in my country at an outlet store but went for the 3s anyway to be cooler.... actually, as everyone says, they're hotter haha. Oh well.

The clay versions of the Speeds are surprisingly tremendous on hard court. Great amount of stick/give, and the tread actually lasts so much longer than you'd expect. My experience.

For those bothered by the 3's "hot" issue, do what I did and take a pen or a paper-clip and poke holes through the mesh above the forefoot. Helps a lot, and there's still rubber protecting above the fabric that you're poking through so it doesn't tear the shoe, just alleviates the hot-foot issue.
