What's the risk level involved here? If it's "aste," then you should expect some blowback. Nobody wants their cojones tagged with the dreaded "aste" label.

I will never understand the concept of astrick slams. You can make astrick championships calls for sports like the NBA, NFL because of skeptical referees but historically I always felt tennis is very well run and 99% of the time the calls seem fair. Although I will admit prior to hawkeye, it must have been tough for them considering balls landing within centimeters of baselines/double lines etc.

You forgot 2008 AO. Oh, and this thread sucks. Who cares if the finals opponent isn't a slam champion if they played well enough (and in many cases beat slam champions along the way).

Djokovic's 2008 AO against Tsonga and Nadal's 2005 FO against Puerta meet your criteria as well.

But you can only play the opponents who have come through the draw to play you so there can never be asterisks in winning a tournament unless you have had walkovers in most of the rounds.

They were both non-champions. Being a non-champion and winning can never count as an asterisk.

I made a big * in the cases of champions that won without meeting a single champion and some notes on some where context matters.

Lol op need to understand the tennis first.
According to op playing Sod in RG 09, 10 is asterisk. The way Tsonga and Murray played against Rafa in semi in 08 shows they were in great form.

Neither can being a champion and winning. It is interesting (at least for some) to point out the stats where a champion has beaten a non-champion but that doesn't mean there can be an asterisk unless the champion has come through on byes and therefore never beaten anyone.
