Kozlov, Paul, and likely Halys leading NextGen out of qualifiers. Smyczek rounds things out. Nice additions to draw. One gets Chung, one gets Donaldson for a potential NextGen blood bath in the race for Milan. Two will play each other. Two will be gone after first round.:(

Who is this Christopher Eubanks...and why is he going toe to toe with Fritz? (I love pleasant surprises.)

He's a junior at Georgia Tech. 6'7" and 165 lbs. ....a tall drink of water. Perhaps a slightly slower developer due to his height?

Chris takes the first set.... I hope he can keep it up. Great for the local crowd.

And Eubanks breaks in the early going of the 2nd set!
Fritz is looking a bit flat footed. It's like he doesn't expect Eubanks to come up with some of the shots he is making.

Fritz is kind of limping a tiny little bit. Arias thinks he should've gone to college.

Yasssss! Eubanks wins in straights!!

Cool as a cucumber until he wins it and THEN shows the emotion. So exciting for the young man.

(Oh, did I mention he has a lovely OHBH? Does not look like he came through the USTA factory.)

Eubanks is good but has huge holes in his game, especially backhand. Fritz again looks like somebody who doesn't want to be out there.

What a well-spoken young man.
When they asked him about his coach and school...he very eloquently and graciously said that his coach coaches not just for the moment, but to develop a player long term.

Yikes, USA got wrecked again at one of its own. In Newport they were lighting up menthols to ease their sorrows. I guess they binge on peach cobbler, here?

Yes, he still has things to work on, but he seems to have the most important thing that is difficult to work on...mental strength.
I like his style. Here's a 6'7" guy who has a serve (not surprising, but still room to improve) and still plays the ball confidently around the lines. I think he is going to keep on improving. I will be cheering for him.

I know it is easier to "go for it" when you are the underdog, but who knows in this case? We'll have to wait and see what happens once Eubanks focuses solely on pro tennis.

Yeah, good for Eubanks. It must be hard to be 6'7 and go into tennis when basketball is such a huge sport. Will be interesting to watch, he definitely looked more like the nextgen than Fritz. Most important is that he has weapons.

I'm confused. USA won. They were going to win either way. Shouldn't people be happy that there is yet another potential American talent on the horizon? It's not like an old journeyman beat Fritz.
Of course, if Fritz is the "chosen one", then I perhaps get your point.

I didn't mean just that match in particular. Checked the scores. Think five Americans bit it today, including a couple that the ATP keeps trying to promote.

Yah, I think I get what your saying now. When the "hopefuls" get knocked out then you get less confident about their potential.
I have no idea if Eubanks has any potential....likely less than the identified "young talented American crew", but there's a long shot that he could join the crew. Wasn't Isner a late developer and didn't he take the college route? (I'm likely mistaken.)

Think you're right about Isner. UGA product... joined the tour at 23 or so. I dunno... guess it's just a means to an end for a bunch of 'em. Fritz's case is unfortunate to me, at this point. Was surprised to see him in an ad for some product on a YouTube video the other day (not ID'd but I knew who he was). Seems to be continuing his downward spiral. Was like two weeks ago he was giving an interview about being excited for another shot at his first win at a major. Wrecked. Now dumped from the 1R at a 250.

I feel a bit disappointed about Fritz as a fan too, but, he is only 19!! He has many, many possible productive tennis years in his future. If his heart is in it he can wait a couple of years and then go for it. If it's not in his heart, well, then he should make the right choice for himself. I believe that he is carrying the weight of everyone else's expectations (and I don't mean us fans) on his shoulders. I don't envy him. I hope he can be strong and figure out what is the right path in life for himself. Possibly tennis be damned.

He decided to knock up his partner and become a teenage father.

Muller passes on an easy forehand that's inside the line, goes to change ends at 4-1 in the breaker, gets distracted by a moving chair, complains to the ump, stops before his second serve so people will shut up . . . Oh yeah, he totally wants to be playing this 250 in the heat in front of a comatose crowd.

Anyone have a stream for this tournament? It's not shown in the uk I don't think and I would like to see the backend of this tournament if possible.

In previous years, I think they have shown the final at least. SkyUK are currently showing Hamburg this week.

Thanks mate yes I realised they were showing Hamburg! Maybe sky will show the finals who knows :)
Don't know why they can't at least give us a red button option so we can have a choice. SkyUK devote several channels to football or friggin' golf or friggin' Formula 1 but nothing specifically for us tennis fans. I often feel we are the poor relations amongst sportsfans and get treated shamefully!

Agree with you there! They have done this revamp which is great but nothing dedicated to tennis as there is for Cricket, Tennis and Formula 1! It's a real shame!

And Chris does it! 64 46 62!!
This is a joke. Donaldson needs to grow up and play with more poise and determination. you can't lose to this kind of College player in the big stage. He didn't even win the NCAA title for pete's sake..........

Does he have a slice backhand? It seems like he tries to block back backhands instead of slice.

Big servers seem to do well with a few years in college. Kevin Anderson and John Isner and Steve Johnson benefited from playing in college, where they could develop their game without getting destroyed by better opponents. Eubanks definitely has a higher ceiling than any of the guys he's faced this week.

“I do not think I could rank one over another,” Eubanks said when asked to compare his first ATP win with clinching his first ATP-level quarterfinal. ” The whole situation is pretty crazy. Both of the wins lumped up together, it makes for a pretty remarkable week. I am just hoping I can keep it going. Then you can be asking what is better your first, your second or your third.

“Yeah, pretty much sums it up (as) best you can,” Eubanks said when hit with the “dream week” question. “It is like a dream come true. I am hoping I am not waking up anytime soon.”

 (You have to like a guy who has that kind of hopefulness and humor.)

Harrison is up next. Can Eubanks keep knocking off his more established fellow members of the American contingent?

Who do you guys think will take the crown from here? I think it's up for grabs between Isner, Muller, Sock, and Eubanks.

Isner seems to be playing well and Muller is in form brushing Tommy Paul currently. Chris Eubanks is a name I'm becoming familiar with, He's 6ft7 and packs a punch, it's always good to see new players around on the ATP tour.
