So those Atlanta players that have heard of Agape Tennis Academy and dealt with it, can you tell me more?
also @treo

The city of Atlanta originally choose the bid for the management of 5 Atlanta tennis centers to Agape over UTA which had successfully managed the tennis centers for 9-10 years. When UTA first took over the tennis centers, I think the centers were losing $; under UTA's management, the centers were bringing in revenue to the city. UTA contested the bidding process and was granted 6 month extensions to their current contract several times. Atlanta's procurement dept has been investigated for corruption. Many people thought Agape-which had only managed one tennis center- got the contract over UTA with a track record of successfully managing the 5 for Atlanta plus some private facilities outside the Perimeter because the company was a female owned business, and its owner was connected to high level Democrats. On her Facebook page, she was pictured in between Stacey Abrams and Rep John Lewis

Anyway the tennis players that utilized those facilities were very unhappy that UTA might be replaced. They placed Keep UTA yard signs in their front yard and created Change. org petitions that garnered close to 5000 signatures. Here are some links to articles

UTA had a good reputation with both juniors and adults-was a leader in creating UTR tourneys for both juniors and adults in the area so players did not have to travel for competition. Some of their pros were former D1 coaches, and I know in recent years they had a couple guys go play for ACC schools as well as MM D1 universities

I think Agape did fine managing DeKalb Tennis Center, but to assume their organization could go from 1 to 6 centers was a very ambitious project esp when the existing management was doing a great job. Macon should watch out for politics being put into play. That said I do know Agape has donated funds to help low income players both in the US and in Africa. Tennis management is very competitive in Atlanta. A lot of good pros have had to move elsewhere to make a living, because even tho there are 80,000 ALTA members plus a lot of juniors, the metro area attracts many former lower level ATP pros (as well as some who were once top 50 ATP), collegians, as well as teaching pros who have been training for years who are looking for a career in tennis. Even though the Atlanta metro area accounts for about 1/3 of the top Southern juniors, there are too many junior academies for all to survive.

Good luck to you in Macon. The renovations to John Drew in 2016 and 2017 were very nice, but with the new Rome facilities on the Berry campus, I am sure Macon lost a lot of tennis business.

Definitely female-owned businesses with a record of minority outreach should be preferred in order to break the monopoly of male-run businesses, in case the other qualifications of the two companies are close. It is also a good idea to change the managing company after 10 years so that monopoly and corruption don't take hold.

UTA also did community outreach including providing free coaching at summer camps for inner city children at one of Atlanta's tennis center, working with inner city kids on Fridays, and also providing tennis for special needs children on Saturday. https://utatennis.com/community-outreach/ While Agape is owned by a white female, UTA has 6 partners-while 4 are white men, one is a white female and one an African American male and pros are diverse too from different ethnicities and nationalities. My son didnt train there as UTA's better programs were inside city limits, and we lived in the suburbs with other great choices within 15-20 min drive. However, the people we knew who lived inside the city limits spoke highly of UTA. Agape had also won some awards, but this was one of those situations where if it isnt broke, you dont fix it. ATL would have lost revenue if UTA had lost the contract as their players would have probably followed UTA pros to private clubs leaving less money to fund outreach programs. One other thing I remember about UTA is that it was not territorial with their juniors. Some academies just wanted their players to play among themselves, but UTA would invite talented juniors from other academies to matchplay on some Saturdays either for free or low charge.

Do not let that fool you. It is just window dressing. It might be "female-owned business" but there is a white person pulling all the string.

There are tons of 8a "minorities" owned business that bid for the Federal government contract here in Washington DC but those companies are backed and finance by Fortune 1000 companies. You can apply for 8a status if you're minorities, female, disabled, veterans. Minorities might have their name on the company but it is financed by non minorities folks.

While Agape is owned by a white female, UTA has 6 partners-while 4 are white men, one is a white female and one an African American male and pros are diverse too from different ethnicities and nationalities.

How can that be diverse? LOL....

All sorts of public facilities have restrictions. Whether they should a particular restriction is one thing, but I think it's clear they can. I pay insane taxes in Illinois, doesn't stop my local tennis facility from having restrictions.

Went to our local drill with one of the teaching pros that didn’t sign the contract. The other teaching pro that was forced out was there as well. A lot of people aren’t happy about it and have started boycotting JDS. A lot of the captains that had USTA teams play out of JDS won’t be playing out of there any more.

The pro who quit here is teaching at a club somewhere else but it is far out and I don't know of anyone who followed him there. Sometimes people take lessons where it is convenient for them or their children.

@jcgatennismom great summary of what went down last year! I live here in Atlanta, and I knew some of the story, but not all of it. Yard signs for both academies were spread out in my area of north Atlanta. It felt like an odd political campaign.

With multiple 6 month extensions in effect, it looks like UTA is still in charge of Atlanta facilities for the foreseeable future. Does anyone know when the next extension or decision is due?

But you can sue, threaten legal action if their restriction blocks your access to the public facility. Obviously a local municipality can contract out management of facilities, but those facilities still need to provide reasonable public access. "Reasonable" is what the courts can sort out.

Here’s an update:
Last night there was a Zoom meeting among people unhappy with Agape Tennis. The main speaker was Dana Johnson. She is a retired lawyer and has obtained copies of the contracts with Amy and Agape. She also has been in touch with reporters and is largely responsible for the Macon Telegraph article that appeared in yesterday’s paper. She voiced concerns over the possible conflicts with the contracts:

- Amy is supposed to serve as the Tennis Director and spend 40 hours per week in Macon, and that time is NOT supposed to be spent on Agape projects, lessons, or camps – it is supposed to be time spent on our tennis community.

o Sources say she has not been spending 40 hours per week in Macon.

o When she is here, she is conducting Agape programs and leaving the Tennis Director responsibilities up to County employees.

- Agape/Amy rents the pro shop space at JDs for $100 per month. She is not supposed to sublet that space without written consent/approval from the County. She has sublet the space to YourServe, which is a company out of Atlanta. Dana is trying to find out if Amy has received the proper authorization for that.

- There is a “rumor” that Amy is going to ask to be relieved of her Tennis Director duties (and, presumably forego her $40,000+ salary and benefits package) and still be allowed to have exclusive control over the courts. This “rumor” has supposedly come from Agape’s business manager, but it has not been verified. If it is true, then the County will have essentially leased the courts to Agape and would still be without a Tennis Director to grow tennis in our community. (Agape would be earning money for private lessons, etc., but not be required to implement programs for the community at large.)

The commissioners have resumed Zoom meetings, and Dana is attempting to find out how Dana can participate and voice the tennis community’s concerns. In the meantime, Dana (and the organizer of last night’s Zoom meeting, who I believe is the one who started the petition) would like the tennis community to come together to show the County how unhappy we are with how Agape has implemented its “acquisition” (Amy’s words!) of our courts, including running off our beloved pros, raising prices, and not offering adults the programming we had in the past – or anything close to it. The protest is scheduled for 7:00 this Sunday (July 12) in front of City Hall. This time was chosen because it will not interfere with business, parking will be free, and it is hoped more people will be available. Dana is going to alert the media, so she hopes there will be news coverage. If not, the protesters are asked to take video footage that can be shared with the media. They ask you and your friends and family to be there, to wear masks, and to bring your tennis racquets because they have signs they will affix to your racquets. (I can’t remember what they said, but I assure you it was nothing offensive – just voiced dissatisfaction with Agape.)

Here is the article the above references. Article is poorly written and a lot of the information is not true. The quotes from Amy are untrue as well. She has had complaints made against Agape on the Facebook page and they have all been deleted. She says she is not here to make money though everything that she has set up here makes her money.

Just saw this...
I’ve played out of DeKalb fairly regularly for the last 5-6 years. Both before and after Amy and Agape took over UTA.

it was a pretty rough transition at first, mostly due to politics and people’s fear of change. A lot of pro turnover and the facility was turned over pretty much in shambles. They didn’t even leave them a working phone number and I remember Amy calling me from her cell phone after I emailed about booking a court for a match.

But in the long run, things are roughly the same under Agape as they were under UTA. I like the pros she has attracted as well as the prior UTA pros.
I’d recommend having faith. She’s pretty good at what she does.

Protest was cancelled due to rona. I haven’t heard anything since. I think the county is trying to brush everything under the rug.

Was Dekalb a private or public facility? She is never in Macon.

If Her plan of destruction continues the association that runs the local leagues will go under. All leagues and tournaments will be controlled by her.

Just received an update tonight. A little context, Agape sent out a message to their small group of followers today begging them to send an email to the Macon commissioners:

The Commissioner also Emailed me and Dana and said they are discussing terminating her contracts this week so send more Emails wanting her termination right away. I’m just getting home and I will write up an Email that everybody can just forward shortly. I’ll send you a copy.

This is what the Agape CEO thinks of the people who aren’t happy with how she runs her facilities. She deletes all complaints off of the pages she runs as well. Only #positivevibes. If you read the article I posted before she stated that she hasn’t received any complaints about Agape yet she knows about her haters.

What Commissioner is this? Someone in government/city council/etc? If he/she is sending emails asking people to make negative comments about the person, that would be a violation of ethics and will lead to an investigation and lawsuits.

The Commissioner is not asking for negative comments. They have read the negative emails sent and are considering terminating Agapes contract because of them. “Dana” is the retired attorney heading up the fight against Agape.

I'm from Roswell and never heard of Agape. I just searched the web. Looks like they are out of Dekalb Tennis center. Looking through the photos and website, looks like they have received "magazine" awards, but did not see any teams winning ALTA or USTA. My guess is another flash in the pan academy, that will not be around long.
No, it won't be around long. I heard a couple of our Alta teammates talking about this that are from that area and they said almost the exact same thing. It won't last long though because you can't do the same thing you do in Atlanta. The market is different. I remember when Sugar Creek in Atlanta tried to or basically ran the tennis people out of dodge by wanting nothing but Golf there...well they got it and the **** closed down for a while. They had loads of teams out of there. When they built the new club house they started making all these silly rules about how teams could not bring their own food for alta. You had to buy the food from them and then it was high as a camel's @$$. Well it's reopened now and guess what...it's golf that's gone now. I don't know all to know but it would seem to me that most of the cost from there was coming from keeping up the golf course and not the tennis courts. Why would you do something like that? So I don't know what this person is thinking going down where you barely have any tennis and pissing off the locals that were there when they came in. It won't last.

I don't know the time frames involved, but with the rise of Tiger Woods, golf became very popular and a lot of "Tennis and Golf" country clubs converted almost entirely to golf. With the fading of Woods, things changed. So what you mention might be such a thing.

Received this yesterday. This is from Dana (mentioned in earlier posts) that is the retired lawyer working against Agape:

In an email dated July 29, 2020, Commissioner Mallory Jones informed one of his constituents that “the Macon-Bibb administration is analyzing our whole tennis operation”. He further stated that “this evaluation will also include the three tennis coaches that decided not to remain” and “we are trying to separate hearsay from the truth and gather all facts regarding the whole situation.” According to Mr. Jones the County Attorney and the County Manager “are handling the investigation”.

I have tried to determine what is being done to conduct this investigation and have concluded that no investigation is occurring. None of the three coaches has been contacted by the investigators. None of the three center coordinators has been contacted by the investigators. None of the support staff at the centers has been contacted by the investigators. The business manager for Agape, the only Agape representative present in Macon/Bibb on a regular basis, has not been contacted by the investigators. None of the team captains for the many teams now refusing to play out of JDS tennis center has been contacted by the investigators. None of the many citizens affected by the Agape contracts has been contacted by the investigators.

Apparently there is no investigation and the promise of such was designed to appease the tennis community.

As the recipients of this correspondence are well aware, Ms. Pazahanick was hired on March 16, 2020. Pursuant to her employment as County Tennis Manager, she is a probationary employee for 6 months and that during the probationary period of employment she has no guarantee of continued employment, no protectable interest or property rights requiring procedural safeguards and she may be terminated for any reason with no hearing. (See Macon-Bibb County Government Acknowledgement of Employment Conditions, signed by Amy Pazahanick and dated March 11, 2020).

Whatever the facts, gloating about the fact that somebody has a job which is still in its probationary period and hence can be terminated for no reason makes me sad. It is sad to see a lawyer so happy that people have to be employed in situations where they have no rights. Maybe "Dana" is retired and doesn't care, but one needs to think deeply before gloating about such situations, especially in these economic times. These clauses themselves need to be looked into to see if they are justified.

She should sue as mentioned in the article. If the procurement process has been followed and a company won, the city council can't just arbitrarily shelve the results and not move ahead if they still have the money. Otherwise the losers of any contract who have deep pockets can prevent the winner from benefiting by just mobilizing public opinion against the winner. Women-led companies like Agape will suffer a lot.

This popped up on my FB feed. Ill paste:

Let’s talk Atlanta tennis!
Agape Tennis Academy has been recommended and awarded, the honor and opportunity, through the proper channels established by the City, to manage five City of Atlanta tennis centers. We have fairly and with integrity won on our merit and vision for the future of the City- TWICE! The process to be recommended by the City is arduous, long, extremely tedious, and must pass through multiple layers of scrutiny and reviews, including financial and statistical reporting, risk management, organizational structure plans, Small Business Enterprise requirements, capital improvement and investment plans, business pro formas, disclosures, transition plans, and the offices of contract compliance, just to name a few, to be awarded, this honor and opportunity.
Until NOW, we did not realize that the process is also greatly affected by how vocal our supporters are. We thought the process was legally and without our lobbying to remain quiet until after the final City Council vote. On Tuesday, September 8th, when the final City Council vote took place, we realized we were greatly mistaking by having all our supporters remain silent. But that is okay because we have so many supporters who want to be heard, now.
And it is also okay because, there is a strong option that was stated by Council President Moore that the legislation to reintroduce the recommendation for Agape Tennis Academy to manage the tennis centers can be brought forth in the next City Council meeting, which is September 21st! This would far and away be the best option for everyone, especially the community tennis players and their coaches (many of whom were set to and will join the Agape Team), who currently have no programming.
City employees are currently operating the centers and will be for a long foreseeable future UNLESS Agapes recommendation is reintroduced before Council in the next meeting. It is very important that the citizens and tennis players of Atlanta understand what is at stake. Supporting Agape Tennis Academy coming into the tennis centers gets the community, the kids, the teams, and our amazing tennis community back on the courts we all love WITH MANY OF THE SAME COACHES you all love, and enjoying the sport that we all love as soon as possible! This helps those coaches, our community, our mindsets, and gets us all back playing tennis in the City of Atlanta most immediately!
Our coming together to support Agape Tennis Academy gets the Atlanta tennis community back on the courts with many familiar coaches and will show the rest of the tennis industry WHY Atlanta has been and is, the tennis capital of the WORLD!
Let’s do this, together, and get the recommendation for Agape, rightfully, reintroduced before City Council on September 21st so we can all play on the Atlanta courts soon! #UniteAtlantaTennis #SupportAgapesRecommendation

Yep, can confirm. Was at Dekalb last night and their name is everywhere.
She makes everyone affiliated wear her brand. Even the coach/instructors.

Everything she said in her post is bogus. She has done none of what she promised. She is barely in Macon and her contract with Macon requires her to work at JDS 40 hours a week. From what I have heard Dekalb TC isn’t in that great of shape.
This past Thursday I had my first league match back since COVID at JDS and only 10 courts out of 30 were being used. The 10 courts were being used by my teams matches and a 3.0 league.
There were no drills being run etc. Before agape took over there were drills every Thursday with 10-20+ tennis players on court attending. Agape has run a lot of people off and turned JDS into a ghost town.

Let me try to translate it for you:
-Last year the JDS tennis center director was let go
-The job was posted and there were a lot of candidates that interviewed but two of the Macon Tennis directors did a under the table deal with Amy Pazahanick and her company Agape even though she didn’t interview
-Agape took over JDS and implemented her business model. She gave the pros at JDS 11 page contracts that made them pay her more money than they were previous giving in court fees etc to teach. They would be Agape employees and would have to follow agape rules.
-Three of the coaches did not sign and they were told to find employment elsewhere. One of them had been teaching at JDS for 30+ years.
-Once this happened the supporters of the coaches boycotted JDS and Agape. She was turning a public park into a private club.
-She did not compromise and was not going to listen to the pissed off tennis players. If was her program or no program.

Sounds like fun times! Hopefully the rumor of her leaving is true ... as long as the center can replace it's staff with quality management.

Most of the employees are employed by the city. So basically a private corporation that has employed coaches but the support staff is employed by the city. She will take her coaches and her contract with “Your Serve“ of Atlanta back to where she came from.
