Who do you think wins in Rome?

I really hope Nadal never plays this "tournament" again.
Schwartzman will have a tough time recovering from this to face Shapovalov, while Djokovic once AGAIN will get lots more rest after breezing through the hopeless competition in the other half of the draw.
It’s meant to be for Novak. Hopefully wins Rome the perfect tonic to get over the us open disappointment!

Well in fairness I don’t think you can say @Beckerserve was wrong about Novak either. He didn’t exactly look awesome today and probably would’ve lost playing a better player (like Diego).
Not sure either of their form matters. I have huge doubts FO will actually be completed. I wonder if both are a bit distracted. Not looking good in paris currently

Anyone still have Rafa down as favourite for Roland Garros?

Serving at 35 per cent at pro level ends one way. Nadal did not play USO so if he says he is rusty that is his fault.
More worrying was his foot speed.
I said to @Hitman a few days ago Nadal will want big servers not the diegos and goffins in his draw.

Well 43% to be exact which is still terrible but he hasn't played much and only in his 3rd match back so it's somewhat expected . I thought everybody was jumping the gun just because he thrashed a couple of players not playing a high enough level. Diego was the 1st real test and he can be beaten in these tuneups. He is still a heavy heavy favorite for RG and I expect to him play much better there. But in his 3rd match in months he is going to be rusty. Still, I couldn't resist asking you to analyze Nadal's game like you did Djokovic's earlier.

At least one shot at the Djokovic Open is needed.
Why? It's a matter of reputation. Nadal has no chance against Thiem or Djokovic in RG this year, and if he loses in a semifinal or final he will hurt his legacy A LOT. Because from this moment he will not even be the most dominant player at a single slam. This will go to Djokovic for never losing in AO semifinal or final.

As great as Schwartzman played today, prime Nadal would find a way to beat him. Like he found against Gulbis in Rome 2013. Getting broken 3 times in a row in the second set is just inexcusable.

Novak didn't look good today for big chunks of his match but I was more so talking about him saying that about USO Novak.

ROFL. You want to join @Yugram and @Krish0608 or something? Is there a trolling competition which I didn't hear about?

I like Novak so dont take any criticism i make of him as bashing him. Ill criticise Nadal as well. I know how amazing Novak can be but since lockdown he is way off that level.
As for Rafa the serve does not worry me as that occasionally happens. I am.worried about his foot speed. He used to do little small steps like lightening but he is now taking long lurching movements which is not the way to move on clay. I felt that USO final v Medvedev really took a lot out of Nadal. I had hoped the enforced break would have helped but he looks slower. It could be the sands of time are running away from him.
Let us see if he goes to Paris. I would not be surprised if he doesnt. I have said that for weeks.

Not saying Novak is playing his best but since the end of the lockdown he’s won 11 matches and the only one he lost so far was a DQ. I get he hasn’t played top 10 players but he’s done well so far. His days of winning and dominating everything are in the past.

I still think he has another level to go to. His attacking play is outstanding. Its the defensive side that i feel has gone off but he still moves like a panther so i think he can go on a huge run again. Nadal the one who i think is looking like physically he may be declining.

Toni scrambling to do everything to make sure Diego stays out of RAFA’s bracket at RG
It's been known that all other red clay surfaces in Europe are faster than RG. His losses in these prep clay matches have happened before he wins the French. Still a great win for Diego but this does not translate to beating him at RG.

Congrats to Diego on his first win over Nadal, especially on clay.

Don't know what wrong with this forum that everyone is StrongRuling now, but it's an annoying trend. This loss doesn’t mean Nadal’s chances of winning Roland Garros are diminished. Nadal has lost Rome 4 times before and gone on to win the French. Last year Nadal lost several clay court matches on the way to Roland Garros and still won it.

Lol, stop it. Everyone here but you know Nadal is a big favorite win RG.
Based on WHAT? How he played there in the past is irrelevant. He got schooled by the first opponent who can actually play from the baseline. I'd say he isn't even relevant in RG anymore. Djokovic is a lock for the title.

Last year he at least won Rome right before RG. The only year when he was coming into RG in real bad form and still won was 2014. Don't see him winning again though. That was 6 years ago.

Djokovic won Cincy though, although he was shaky at times, and was pushed by some well playing opponents. By USO, he started playing much better so I just didn't see what you were seeing. Now he's not playing well in Rome so far, which I think is more so about the changing of surfaces, but if you were to say something wasn't right in his game here then I would agree; today in his 2nd set his timing was way off. But Rafa is not match tough, and he hasn't been pushed by difficult opponents until now. He also isn't getting any younger either, however, there is no way Nadal is not going to Paris.

Saying the most dominant player ever at Roland Garros by a huge margin is the favorite to win it is not trolling. That's ridiculous.
So if 49 years old Sampras comes back now he will be the favorite for Wimbledon? History is irrelevant. Only current form matters.

How will he have a tough time recovering? It was just 2 sets.

First, my larger point is saying something positive about a player you like is not trolling. Second, that analogy is bonkers. Nadal is 34, not 49, so comparing him to a 49 year old is nonsense.

IMO, it is not a big upset, since Schwartzmann seems to match up
very well with Rafa, matches are always pretty close. 1st win for Schwartzman!
Rafa not very happy about that! No 10th Italian single title this year for Rafa!
Put him on notice that he will have to play outstanding to win another FO now!

With Rafa's best chance to tie Federer for most slams ever, there's no way Rafa will skip it if he's uninjured. His chances only decline from here on out.
I get your point but he is way off where he needs to be. He may want the full clay court calendar. The warning sign is Nadal saying he is Rome to see if he will be competitive in Rome. Little hint there perhaps
