Is Hurkacz the first ever player to win his first two M1000 titles while being ranked outside of the top 10 (actually, of the top 15) at the start of each tournament?
Well, I just checked, and if we count previous iterations of the series, the answer is... no.

Juan Aguilera won Hamburg in 1984 and 1990, while ranked outside of the top 30 at the start of both tournaments. His 1990 run was especially impressive, beating Ivanisevic, Chang, Courier, Gustafsson, Forget and Becker on his way to his 5th and final career title. All this after spending most of the previous 4 years outside of the top 100...

In winning 2023 Shanghai, Hurkacz has:

1. Won his 2nd title of the season.
2. Won his 7th ATP title overall.
3. Won his 2nd title at Masters 1000 level.
4. Become 1 of 8 officially active players to win multiple Masters titles.
5. Become 1 of 12 officially active players to win multiple big titles.

Yes true, I’ve no interest in seeing a serve bot in the finals I’m afraid.

Lol, I don’t think it will work

No, I just find him excruciatingly dull.
Hurkacz personality is as vanilla as they come, but he’s still much better than the one dimensional ball basher that is Rublev.

Did you watch his match against Djokovic and the level of serving? Probably not.
Yeah, nobody really cares. It’s still a R4 loss. Wawrinka beat Tsitsipas at RG 2019 in an extremely closely fought 5 setter, much closer than Hurk’s loss to Novak. Nobody remembers RG 2019 as a particularly good tournament for Tsitsipas.

Kudos to @Aabye5 who voted "other"

Sad that there was no live thread for the final. It was a great match overall. Much better than a lot of recent Masters1000 finals (except Cincinnati of course).

Congrats to Hurkacz. Such an underrated player. I'll never forget how well he served against Nole in Wimbledon this year. Now that Isner retired, I consider him the best server on the Tour...

I remember both matches and I care. lol. Speak for yourself. Anyway, once again congrats to Hurkacz.

Just how pathetic and symbolic of this era is the fact that nobody cares about a Masters final and the players playing in it. I love Hubi and Rublev, but they are hardly tier 1 players by any stretch of imagination. Who’s going to save this sport which seems to be surely heading towards annihilation? Seems like there’s nobody great enough or consistent enough or charismatic enough to help save this sport. Maybe for the first time ever, tennis is staring at a very real crisis that threatens its existence. Alcaraz or “Runecker” are the last straw.
I can understand Acaraz but why that idiot backward facing hat fiddler Runecker is in the picture? What has he won of significance?

Runecker is yet to play a match though. The potential is very obviously there. So we’ll just have to wait and see how it goes.

Good riddance for the rude screaming hillbilly big mouth Rublev.
You calling Rublev a "hillbilly"? Maybe you aren't sure what that word means. The guys is actually pretty enlightened. And he yelled in that guy in French first, before switching to English (still not his native tongue). I'd love to see a "hillbilly" that speaks three languages.

What a sour faced Rublev, he didn't even say thank you after he was given the trophy and flowers.
Maybe he is just sick of all the nonsense in China?

As far as I can see, Rublev is 2-3 v Sinner, 2-6 v Meddy, and has not yet played tiny.
His win over Djok in the Belgrade Final '22 was previously mentioned. Not too bad..

Go, Rublev.
The 2 losses for Sinner were both retirements. Sinner is a much much better player than Rublev
