Will Federer bounce back or get bounced again?

The thing I don't like about Zverev is the constant fist pumping, sort of in his opponents face. If Nadal wants to do that, he's earned that right by being an ATG. It is a little much for Z to be doing it almost after every point. I don't like this constant interactions with his box either. He should go out there, quietly do his job and let his racket do the talking. Hopefully he'll learn that.

Nadal was doing that even before he became an ATG, though. Nole was talking big stuff which he ultimately did live up to. I have no idea why tennis fans are such ego-police. Is this really the same sport that has been graced by the presence of Nastase, Connors and Mac? I'll take Zed's bragging over the pathetic Fedalovic fanboyism of most young players (as a result of which, they just fold in front of them).

He hasn't said he is. Saying he wants to get to Fed and take him on is healthy. It is the only attitude that will take him to the top. If he 'knows his place', he will be forever stuck...in the bottom.
Let's see how he matures because he's 20 but not a fan atm, period.

For people wanting Federer to show better form you should want it to be a final against Zverev then, not his pigeon Gasquet.

But I'm sure TTW will just call Zverev overrated garbage/all hype/ not a true contender for Wimbledon if he loses tomorrow .

Worrying final opponent for Fed. The only guy alongside Kyrgios, Cilic and peak Djokovic showing up that I fear for Fed at Wimbledon.

That said, Fed should have enough serve game and experience to grind this one out.

Disagree that Fed's been awful. His % of net approaches won is impressive and he's generally been OK on serve. FH has been firing overall too.

Movement, BH and ROS have been sloppy must admit.
Because he hasn't gone up there as often as he should. Nadal also has a great percentage behind his trips to the net, but we all know half of the reason why (aside from him being the greatest volleyer to greet this earth)

I don't mind the bragging, I mind the "oh, you hit a winner, you got lucky"-look that he pulls half a dozen time in a match.

Not only he hasn't come to the net enough, he has also been relatively conservative in his rallying position. Would be interested to know what used to be his breakup as between on or inside the baseline, behind it and REALLY behind it say in 2014/15? At Halle, he was inside or on the baseline 40 odd percent, another 40 odd percent a little behind and 5 percent really behind. I have a feeling the percent for on or inside the baseline used to be higher. In rallies, he has been defending rather than taking control. His forehand is too much in ball bashing mode. This year, he had been showing the variety of old but now it looks back to his 2015 FH.

Feel sad for Gasquet but did not want Federer to have an easy match going further.

Hope Zverev has a great future.

Good points, where's the last 15 % though? Tennis has too few of these stats available for us mortals

No not just the BH, the Fh's OK. It's more mental. He also onlyl recently got into good physical shape. he always used to expire physically.
I don't see a top 3 player there, but should have stayed top 10, at max potential.

Forehand is rubbish. It's not that hard to see.

I'm also in the camp that Federer's form could be better, but would definitely rather him see a challenge in the final vs just routinely beating Gasquet. Even if that comes at the expense of a loss.

Good to have Federer shaken up a few times before Wimbledon. There's some tough outs in the draw this year. Could have some real nailbiters early.

It's 40 odd but more like 45 plus, so the two 40s together add up to something like 95. They just flashed it on the screen when he was playing. Idk, I haven't seen him play with so little initiative from the baseline in quite some time. Pretty sure it's the rustiness but does rustiness necessarily go away quickly every time at his stage of the career? That's my worry. Maybe I am hand wringing but better reset expectations than to write in a title that's not quite so surely his as some people think (talking about Wimbledon).

this is true. I'm somewhere in between where not in panic mode, although lmao my posts probably indicate other wise, but not quite sure fed is a favorite. I'd say by default of who knows how the other big 4 will be, he might be up there in terms of favorites, but certainly not a clear one. people keep mentioning hitting the bh the way he did in AO, but i always feel like he will slice more on grass, and the way he hit his bh on hard court, wouldn't necessarily translate to grass. hopefully, should he get past the first week, he will start using it more. he was patchy at AO as well, and i think the one thing about 2017 fed is he was exceptionally clutch when he needed to be despite subpar play so i would hope he brings that to wimbledon.

I honestly don't think there even is a Wimbledon favorite in the traditional sense of the word. I cannot really see how there's a favorite when I think to myself "Is there anyone who losing would surprise me?" and the answer is genuinely no. For the first Wimbledon since I've watched Tennis, there isn't a frontrunner that could lose and surprise me by losing. Djokovic/Murray have struggled this year, Federer losing would not be as surprising as people want to claim, and Nadal we're not really sure what's going to happen with him. Given his past here of being bounced early nobody would be that surprised if he lost either.

He has NOT been showing that clutchness so far. :( Another thing that concerns...I know it's a tune up but why would he waste energy in a tune up letting a chance to serve out a match slip away? This is Fed, he can just serve four aces and get it done. Which means it's not that easy for him to do so anymore.

Yeah, on the face of it, looks like a very open tournament. It could be that one guy gets on a roll once the tournament starts and clearly establishes himself as the favourite. But right now, yes, the most open Wimbledon in a long time. Maybe since 2001. I don't think Sampras losing then was a huge surprise though it was counted as an upset being his first Wimbledon loss since '96. And it was always going to be a roll of the dice for any of the other more or less equally worthy frontrunners. That was a classic tournament, maybe my favourite Wimby of all. I did sit up in a dark room (mum was sleeping, so lights off) and watch the final all the way to the end. Let's see how this Wimby turns out.

Gaz handed Al the match too
Actually I don't think so. I think Gas played his very best and just couldn't sustain it 3 sets. Different from crumbling from nerves. KK is very young so it's not that unusual. But he had more to bring, that he didn't, against Fed than Gas had against AZ. Az turned it up in the 3rd set too.
Anyway, it shall all become apparent tomorrow.

I noticed this too. But compared to Nick K, he's downright polite. I think it's the style now--there are a few exceptions. COnstant interactions with box are also totally common now--Murray for eg. I think of it as the norm for an overly-coddled generation who need constant reinforcement.

I want someone to put him in his place so that he knows he isn't the best player in the universe.

Would be nice of the rest of the tennis world knew this too. Well someone should be able to do that tomorrow, Fed's level in Halle has been mediocre, I'm seeing many of his fans here say that, (in gentler terms.)
Fed's three wins over Nadal, I think were a little misleading. AO, OK, but just barely, actually behind 5th set, then Nadal shanks two points then Fed serves like a maniac. Suddenly GOAT again!

Then two more matches against Nadal, where Nadal was not playing so great. Also old winning formula against Fed not working, so Nadal in a bit of a muddle on Fed. What was telling to me about Fed was that he almost lost to Berdych and Nick K (Miami or IW, not sure) in 3rd set TBs, where both DF'd to hand it to him. The pressure of beating the "great Federer" (as we are constantly being reminded by commies) got to them.
Then Fed ducks out for the clay where he knew he was not going to win.

Not saying he isn't (maybe) the 2nd best player in the world at the moment. But he doesn't really look like it in Halle. But tomorrow may resolve that lack of clarity, if AZ doesn't implode.

I am a Federer fan. Fully aware that Roger has more chances to lose against Zverev but I wanted and hoped for a Federer/Zverev match. I want to see a good match and want Roger to be tested well

I would have preferred Gasquet testing Fed more than normal but a final here is a decent result and nothing to sulk over even should Fed lose to Z

It seems to me Zverev has improved his net game immensely during these past weeks. The kid always works hard. I like his approach.
Yes, you always get the impression that he is serious about putting the work in and improving week in, week out, never standing still.

Talent plus a good mentality / work ethic is the reason that many see him as a future GS champion and world #1. Of course one never knows, but I tend to agree.

Is anyone really expecting Fed to waltz to the Wimbledon trophy this year? It's probably one of the most open slam tourneys we've had in years. I put Fed as a favourite barely, almost by default.

However that doesn't change the fact that warm-ups usually just aren't great indicators of slam success, it's true in the case of any player and that includes Fed (especially at this stage of his career).

He's gonna play 6 matches on grass, that's about as good preparation as it gets for Wimbledon. We'l see whether he can conjure up some magic there again.

i would normally agree. i still remember everyone and their mom super excited after cinci 2015, and then well we saw result at USO.and on the flip side fed hasn't played well in warm ups, but went on to win the big ones. With that being said, i can see why some fans are concerned about the way he's played at certain points. I think perhaps they, and myself included, are falsely comparing hc to grass and thinking the way he played on hc should translate to grass when that's not the case, but certain points where i'm thinking he cannot get away with this against a better opponent. we'll see. definitely agree no clear favorite. as a tennis fan its exciting, fed fan...nervous.

Can't remember the exact numbers but he wasn't far off Zverev on net approaches. Won something like 20/22 points which is a good amount over 2 short sets.

Fed is the best player on HC and grass at the moment.

Sounds like sour grapes tbh. Nadal didn't look like the best player in the world in the first part of the season either.

Of course he's been stupendous on clay, and in the past he has used that to dominate elsewhere also. But not so much recently. So let's wait and see how they both look at Wimbledon!

I'll grant you that it doesn't look as though Fed is as dominant on grass as Nadal has been on clay. But I never expected him to.

Well done, Zverev. I wonder if this victory will force Alex to give up the doubles or serve as an extra motivation for the doubles event.

Will Zverev pull out a second Montpellier and win both singles and doubles?
Honestly I would take that even over a Federer win.
Halle for Zverev / wimbledon #8 for Fed :D

It is sour grapes, he's always full of excuses for Nadal getting 3-0'd by Federer.

False bravado, he doesn't want his boy Ralph to see Federer on the lawns on Wimbledon, he's scared about the prospect but won't admit it.

NO sour grapes whatsoever, extremely happy with nadal's results, who wouldn't be.
I was responding to another poster who felt the same way i did, about demonstrating to Fed he's not the best in the world right now.

Fed fans always are very reactive to this notion. How unthinkable!

you know 32/41 is still fine be me.\
His boy Ralph? Not a his not a he, you are wrong about so much. Including Fed.
I don't expect Nadal to beat Fed on grass, though that is a possibility.

I know this concept is beyond what your fragile ego can accept, but for the centre of a god like cult , Fed looks pretty mediocre on grass. Fact.

Nah, it isn't the first thread you've tried to downplay the 3 losses. There is no "best in the world" player right now in terms of heading into Wimbledon. But if the past tells us anything it's that just because Rafa dominates Clay, like he always does when he isn't injured, doesn't mean anything for the rest of the year.
