Opelka is barely even caring in this Novak service game, so confident with his own that he'll just keep holding and serve it out.

I think cya Novak.

Would this be one of Djokovic's worse losses on recent record by ranking?

Opelka is ranked #293.

Obviously we know he's former top 20 but just curious.

Already thought GMP had great chance to upset. But Opelka too.

Old Djokovic return game has declined a lot.
What was he thinking in that first set. Novak was standing 155 metres behind the baseline to return for most if the first set.

Honestly, though, I think the story of this match is how well Opelka has played in the non-serve dominant points. He has just been beastly off the ground and gone high risk high reward and pulled it off.

A lot of mutual respect at the shake of hands. Very cool to see.

Opelka played out of his mind. Very scary level.

Onward to Melbourne for Djokovic. His level looks super-impressive to me. Best it’s been since 2019. I don’t think he played badly tonight at all. Nothing you can do when a guy plays like Opelka did tonight.

Opelka saying exactly what I said.

"Playing the best you have nothing to lose". It's just like when the women stopped getting scared of Serena when she dipped and started beating her. Now it's happening to Djokovic.

Insane level from Opelka and well deserved win. Best bh showcase from a 2m+ player ever? ROS was right there, though it was "only" one break, so maybe there's a bigger competition there. One of those magical performances where everything was clicking. Good luck to him, the next match must be an absolute nightmare to play.

I only caught the end of the 1st set but not really surprised at the result. Playing a huge server like Opelka is always a lottery, especially at the start of a new season. Onwards and upwards to Melbourne.

On this form Opelka is a threat to win the Aussie Open this year.
Have some restraint at least. The guy has not played great due to injuries and was beaten by Musetti in 4 last US open.

Djokovic has declined on return, that is real. Do not elevate Opelka, check on Djokovic.

I agree. I also think on hard courts there are so many players that can beat him now and personally it will be difficult to win any HC title again even 250s like this.

In my opinion Djokovic best chance of another title will be clay or grass where field less strong.

That said the pressure is off now and I’m not expecting much. Novak has declined and these youngsters all getting better and just hit the ball so hard with lots of power.

For Novak he just got to stick at it and have a go. It will be difficult though no question. All I really want is 1 more title for the 100th. I hope he does that while he still fit but know it difficult to expect more

An absolute shambles by the men in Brisbane in terms of the schedule today and tomorrow. Not the tournaments fault.

So today, Krajicek/Ram had to retire after 5 games, very sad for Krajicek who pulled up badly. Gave the walkover to Hijikata/Kubler to the SF who will face Cash/Glasspool.
Also in the QF's, Lehecka/Mensik won their 3 setter to make the SF.
Also in the QF's, Jarry/Mpetshi Perricard got a walkover from withdrawal of Duckworth Vekic.

In the singles we had Mpetishi Perricard beat Mensik (both guys won their doubles today as mentioned above)
We also had Lehecka beat Jarry (again, both guys won their doubles today).
We also had Thompson retire against Dimitrov after one set.

Also, for some reason, Hijikata/Kubler have just decided to give a walkover in their SF to Cash/Glasspool meaning they're through to the final.

Now he's the fun thing for tomorrow. The tournament hasn't released the mens doubles match because they're clearly waiting on either Mpetishi Perricard or Lehecka to retire since all 3 will have to play both a singles and doubles match tomorrow.

Opelka is a great guy but i dont really find his tennis much fun. But he definitely plays without any gamesmanship or tantrums. Good luck to him. Much work needed for that young/wise andy murray as a brand new coach on the circuit.

I don't care that Opelka performed the performance of his life, Nole should have won this tournament to prove his form before the AO 25. I am disgusted by this loss.

So tomorrow in Brisbane it is very likely there will not be any men's doubles SF's. One has already been cancelled with a withdrawal and the other is a waiting game to see if Lehecka/Mensik play Jarry/Mpetishi Perricard. All 4 of whom played today in singles and 2 of whom will play in the singles SF's tomorrow.

:)

It was exactly 10 years ago that Djokovic lost to Karlovic in Doha 2015. I believe it was also the quarters.
This is not Novak of 2015. Not surprised at all by the match. IMHO, he’s going to have to get lucky and avoid the occasional hot player if he wants to win a title this year, and I’m not talking about a major one.

In years past this kind of match was an aberration. Is it now? I guess we’ll see.

Forget win, more fight for sure. Opelka coasted in set 2.

Djokovic had no hopes. And that is just not acceptable. This is just best of 3 tournament.

What is it? Stamina strength? Guy has stopped creating break points.

Some are too influenced by the various moments.
The difference between a top player and the Opelka of the moment is in consistency, the top player always plays at a medium-high level.
How many players in a single match can beat anyone, but doing it regularly is another thing, and doing it in a major in matches 3 out of 5 for two weeks is an even higher level.

Opelka will not be a threat in terms of competing to win the Australian Open.
As for Djokovic, a defeat that fuels further doubts about his current level, but in essence in view of the imminent Australian Open his hierarchical role does not change.
From the height of his experience and his history in the tournament he deserves the respect of someone who should not be underestimated.
I always see him as a loose cannon in the draw, but talking about a favorite or one of the favorites at the moment I find utopian.
If I have to outline a hierarchical scale I definitely see him behind Sinner, Zverev, Alcaraz, Medvedev, and more or less in the same tier as Fritz.

Great win for Opelka, he would have beaten everyone today, can he keep this up?

Getting tougher and tougher for the Goat to win some more titles.

Djokovic has gone off the rails in last year.

When he loses first set, he barely wins anymore.

In 2023, if I remember correctly, he was king of winning from behind , winning more than anyone.

Now , he gives up once behind. Was something like 4-12 last year and now 0-1.

Yes it's 2 win 9 losses when losing set 1 for Djokovic since 2024 start. Absolute disaster.

In 2023 it was 8-6. Sinner 2 wins in the end otherwise 8-4.

Yes, the question is: does he really want to keep playing but not win titles anymore, or: is it good for his goat legacy to keep playing for another year or two and make many good (but not great) players very happy to have a 1-0 or 2-1 or 2-0 h2h against the goat, which they can tell their grandchildren about?

Of course it is all his decision, but he knows that now at his old age, it is even more, no, it is much much more: no pain no gain, one has to go super goat mode to be a gs champ again.

AO will be very big for him, some exciting weeks ahead!

It pains me to admit it since he remains a clown of biblical proportions, but in this tournament so far Kyrgios has been the player who has worried Perricard the most.
Considering that it was the first singles match after more than a year and a half from the last one, I would say that it is a good viaticum for the rest of the season, always injuries permitting.
Kyrgios for the type of player that he is does not need too much running-in to return to being a threat for the vast majority of players.
From this point of view I see analogies with Berrettini, who in turn as soon as he found a minimum of physical integrity to allow him to play with continuity, in a few months won 3 ATP tournaments arriving close to the top 30.

Returning to Djokovic, as usual the difference between this version and the past ones is not so much in the peak of the game but in the ability to maintain that peak for as long as possible.
The more time passes, the more that window is destined to shrink.
What remains to be seen is whether Djokovic 2025, at nearly 38 years of age, still has the ammunition to play at Djokovic's level for two weeks in 3 out of 5 matches.

I'd feel confident betting my life's savings that Novak doesn't care if Riley Opelka gets to tell his grandkids about beating him once.
