Basel is back and as usual features a few players still trying to bank points to reach the WTF. Andrey Rublev leads the field, but many of the top seeds have had let downs post-US Open, with the exception of Humbert, Shelton, and Fils.

Top seeds:

1. Andrey Rublev [7]
2. Casper Ruud [8]
3. Stefanos Tsitsipas [11]
4. Holger Rune [14]
5. Ugo Humbert [16]
6. Ben Shelton [17]
7. Arthur Fils [20]
8. Felix Auger-Aliassime [21]

The finalist from Antwerp, Roberto Bautista-Agut and Jiri Lehecka, are also here, along with three local hopes -- a resurgent Stan Wawrinka, wildcard Dominic Stricker, and qualifier Jerome Kym.

Wide open draw, with a lot of potential for upsets.

The fields at Basel and Vienna are remarkably balanced, at least at the high end. The top eight seeds in Basel have a combined ranking of 114. The top eight seeds in Vienna have a combined ranking of 111. Pretty adroit self-sorting by the players, unless some "invisible hand" is assisting in the process.

If one of Rublev and Ruud wins this tournament, he'll be pretty secure in qualification for the finals, barring a surprise winner in Paris. Either will be above Djokovic with the tournament win, Ruud even with a final.

I know that Novak hasn't played all that much, but the thought of either Rublev or Ruud being ranked ahead of him seems scandalous...

Another umpire inserts himself in the match. Calls the ball as hitting Etcheverry before the bounce, giving Shelton a break point.

Etch-e-sketch took it like a pro, but that was silly.

Yah, man, RBA strutting his stuff. Ruud our early again - can't seem to find a foothold these days. Good stuff from 2 other oldies too - Stan & Goffin both through with DG into the quarters. Looks like Rublev is en route to the quarters too up 4-1 in the 2nd.

The remaining r16 matches seem to offer potentially well contested matches - here's the schedule:

I like GMP, but I feel like this is not a match FAA should have lost. Highlights showed him spraying forehands by feet, if not yards. And here I thought he'd cut down on some of the more gruesome errors.

I expect GMP to win against Shapo now, but I expected the latter to lose to Agut, so what do I know.

The serve-return dynamic favors GMP against both FAA and Shapo, to be fair.

Great first set between Fils and Tsitsipas. Fierce Tennis !
Man, Tsitsipas was outplayed in the 2nd, losing it 3-6. Fils was dictating terms with considerable focus / confidence. The comms mentioning that with this loss, ST may not make the WTF, unless he achieves the needed points in Paris-Bercy. He found form at MC this year, winning it, but has found it challenging subsequently. Well done to Fils for remaining incisive when needed, into the SF. He's won 2 titles this year at Hamburg and Tokyo, both 500 events, and has 3 ATP titles to date. Good progress.

Going to try and watch some of the other qf's - all potentially offering interesting contests. Shelton/Rublev, Mpetshi Pericard / Shapovalov and Rune/Goffin. Thinking with my heart, I'd like Denis and David to get through, neutral in the Andrey/Ben encounter.

Holger playing like a nuclear warhead. Holy smoke, he’s good today. Blowing Goffin away.
Yah man. Kid in the zone for sure. Have a soft spot for David as an 'oldie', game I like, but Holger in no mood to dawdle. Hope DG can make it more competitive in the 2nd.
Ben through against Andrey- watched the 1st and thought BS might get it done in straights, interesting that it went to 3.
The semi between Ben/Artur promises to be well contested.

Time to switch off. Revolting game to a watch. Hope Berretini can come back as he’s been the better player yet trails 5-1,

Kach outplayed 3 points in a row but finds himself 0-40. Is this a clay court ? It’s supposed to be indoors but berretini’s winners are being tapped back every time. Disgusting match. Literally gets 3 huge serves in followed by huge FHs that should be winners but the “come on” merchant can run and push them back somehow.

Does he play in Basel? I haven’t seen him in Basel draw.
Vienna I think it was. Most ridiculous match I’ve ever seen. Berretini crushing FHs to the corners but the other can can tap it back like they’re playing in Monte Carlo.

If Giovanni wins we will have all 1/2 finalists younger than 23 y.o. for the first time in ages.

Holger will have his work cut out for him if GMP just keeps serving bombs. But I would trust him over the Canadian duo to get over the finish line, especially with the way he has been playing in Basel up to this point.

Dude did win, game in which his serve dominates, but he can move well/hit beauties off the ground and has confidence too. Interesting fact there, about them all being under 23.

Shelton/Fils and Mpetshi-Perricard/ Rune. 2 Frenchies still in it-wonder if they'll face off in the final?

Finally a real change of guards is coming. It's pretty exciting, actually.

Yah, man. Opens up the tour, and I echo your view - exciting stuff.

Shelton comes back from 5-0 down in second set tiebreak to beat Fils in straights
Enjoyed the 2nd set in this one - dudes fought / scraped /played well at times and blundered at times. Not dead men walking, good energy. Bonus for me is to have Robbie Koenig as a comm - enjoy his contributions.

Would like to see Ben / Holger in the final, but Giovanni might have something to say about that ........
