Munich is here, and Alexander Zverev is one of 5 Germans in the draw. Could face compatriot Daniel Altmaier in the second round.

Outside of the German contingent, 2nd seed Ben Shelton, Miami winner Jakub Mensik, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Ugo Humbert are also featured. Keep an eye out for Altmaier and Cerundolo.

Who do you see holding the trophy at the end of the week?

Oh man. A reason to root for the young 17 year old Engel. Coached by Kohli. Let's hope that means the kid is a class act and makes a decent showing here. I know nothing about him other than that he is supposed to be a promising player.

Other than that: ABZ. It's been a good year so far. Let's see if it can get better.

Kohli seems like he would make a great coach. I saw one match with Engel in Almaty last year. Smart plays, iirc. Which makes sense, working with Kohlschreiber.

Yah man, Kohli was one of my favourites. Gorgeous game and seemed like a thoroughly nice chap. Thanks for the heads up - I'll watch out for him. Hoping Mensik and Shapavalov can do well here.

Skipping between Barcelona / Munich. In the Shelton /Gojo match. Latter is up a set, has a good serve.

The draw: https://www.atptour.com/en/scores/current/munich/308/draws

So, Shelton basically won the second set because of the fans interrupting Gojo but still he celebrates every break point saved against No. 400 like a title?

The dude Gojo looked keen, but couldn't capitalise on his chances sufficiently. Liked his effort, keeping it competative. Shelton/Zverev/Altmaier / Griekspoor/Kecmanovic all through. Pleased to see Goffin is through too.
Mensik / Shapavalov/ FAA/ Cerundolo, among others playing tomorrow. Hope Mensik and Shapavalov get through.

Most excited for the 500 debut of 17 year old German talent Justin Engel
Man looked clean in his first ATP win and already made the main draw in doubles, so he should come in with some confidence

Maroszan not the opponent you want to have, though :censored:

Justin Engel not ready for prime time, unfortunately. Getting destroyed in the second set after losing the first.

Man, I missed it - hope there are highlights, and will try and watch his doubles.
Watching a bit of the Cobolli /Shevchenko. Interesting camera angle. They made it to a tb, FC the more robust- takes it 72. Cerundolo meant business- bagelled home chap Struff & allowed 2 games in the 2nd set.

Think I'm developing a 'kiss of death' complex - Mensik out to Hanfman in 3. Had hoped he could do well here. Dare I voice my support for Shapavalov? I'll risk it ....... go Denis! Don't know who his local opponent with an imposing, but not typically German, name is, I'm sure I'd remember that name and ample blonde mop he's sporting, had I seen him play before.

Yeah, much better matchup than Engel vs Maroszan
Shapo will always give you some unforced errors and on clay you cannot just hit through people

Shelton and his father/coach have creepy smiles. Not to be trusted.
Ben's rah rah attitude is juvenile.
You still going on with this? Pretty much everyone here has come to terms with Ben's on court demeanor, and realized it actually isn't that bad or unusual. And yet you still have a problem?

Calling his dad "creepy"? Have you seen the slew of tennis parents roaming around both the ATP and WTA? Do any of them seem particularly normal?

And what do you say when Alcaraz is yelling about his "balls" like a 15 year old in the locker room?

True, man. The 17 year old DD-P took the 1st set tb 72, and was under pressure serving the first game of the 2nd set, but held. Looks more comfortable out there than Denis at present. And ..... he broke, to go up 2-0. I'm off to watch the Carlitos match. Hope Denis can find his game.

Well, don't know if he was really injured but he retired, which sends DDP into the top 400 and the next round :)

That's a pity, man- just saw the result - shame Denis wasn't up to it. Good news for the kid PD-D to go up in ranking.
FAA seems on his way to a straight sets win and Bublik / Bergs are a set apiece. I'm watching the doubles.

Dude is the best example of losing a watch from a winning position. Could not capitalize if he was given a set for free.
Yah man - pity. When I was watching, he was up a set and a break, looking confident. But what a comeback by Navone! In fact, several turn arounds today with Shevchenko/Humbert / Bergs also resisting the invitation to go home just yet.

Can Zverev & Shelton live up to their seedings tomorrow? I anticipate so.

To be fair, Navone is a nightmare on clay - especially if you want to ease your way to the end of the set there

Yes, all credit to Navone. He is a tough out.

Still, the way you phrase is quite true of FAA...ease your way to the end of the set. So many times I have seen him lose matches from ahead. He seems to lose focus and lets his foot off the floor. Opposite of Sinner in many ways.

Oh, the poll is already closed. I would have voted Zverev, am surprised that nobody else has. Despite his poor recent form, he has to be favourite, no?

Goffin vs Navone goes to third set. Real high intensity clay court match now. Great rallies
Goffin such a technical sound player
Navone a Big Little Powerhouse.
I believe he is using a longbody racket

Munich temperature this week is so over the place

Yesterday it was in mid 20 Celsius and tomorrow it's high of 12 and low of 4. Almost freezing.

These tournament wins don't give any idea how good a player is at Roland garros which is generally in mid 20s Celsius or 80s in farrenheit.

Just a thought. Always check temperature and it's impact on match ups.

Celebrating a win like that when the opponent retired? No pass from me. Despite his age, kid's been playing tennis for 12 years should show better sportsmanship.

Based on your experience of winning a match on tour for the first time, I guess?

Sorry, by no way am I condoning this behavior by him, but the amount of internet warriors insulting a 17 year old kid and his parents for this. Plus the countless influencers, whose biggest achievement is rating tennis dresses online, then trying to make content based on this.
I guess noone ever made a poor judgement in an emotional moment then ;)

Bummer about Shap.
Yah man ..... sigh. 'Twas always thus more often than not. Won't stop my enjoyment of his game when its on, for as long as dude keeps trying.

Great win by Goffin, Navone fell apart UFE wise in the 3rd, disappointing. Will drop quite a bit in the ranking now
Otoh, Goffin enters the top 50 again. Will feel very satisfying i guess
Good to see he did it! Like his game / demeanour. Into the qf. Some interesting contests loom large.

Yep, and even successful Nadal, Borg, Wilander the real wonder kids at 17 did not have such demeanor.
Maybe he learned the lesson, so he does not need to buy analog telephone tokens from Shelton.
