That was a great match. Unfortunately for Ferrer he made mistakes at the most crucial moments.
If he plays like he did for the majority of the second set, he can be a threat to Rafa on Clay (as long as Rafa is not playing his best)

Well I wouldn't say Ferrer threw everything away after it was 5-5 but it just happened to be less consistent at the most crucial moments.
Congrats on your 24th title Nadal. You are 23 Clay titles away from breaking Vilas record lol
And now Rafa can only increase his lead with Federer since he lost in the second round in Rome last year.

Not pointing fingers at you specifically but why does everyone say IF so and so PLAY this well for a very short period of time they can be a threat? It's completely hyperbole.

It's only because when Ferrer is in the zone (something that only happens once in a while with him), he can be a threat.
But he could meet Nadal again and get completely beaten 6-0 6-0 or he could be in fury and beat Nadal in straight sets (although I doubt anyone in the ATP could ever do that to Rafa at the moment). It depends which Ferrer will show up.
In today's case, we've seen a great Ferrer all the way up to 5-5.
It's like the case with Murray in MC. He only showed up once Nadal missed his first opportunity to finish the match at 5-3 in the second set.
you're right, it's just the speed at which he dug himself that hole at 5-5, without a shovel, was astounding. 0-40. saves 2 points but the damage is done! (disclaimer: i think it went 0-40, not certain)

Congrats to Rafa not at his best but still good enough to win in straight sets.
Excellent match. Nadal played a brilliant 1st set and a good 2nd set. Ferrer played very well in the 2nd set, I think he would have taken that set against any other player.
5th crown for Nadal in Montecarlo and Barcelona, dropping only one set.
I'm not sure about his chances in Rome. His matches here were not too long but he played intense matches against Davydenko and Ferrer. A Hamburg 2007 scenario seems quite possible but he's looking great for R. Garros.

At this rate he could break that too. But who cares? I want him to grab that 5th RG title better. He could break Vilas' record sooner if he entered less prestigious clay tournaments like Vina Del Mar, Warsaw, Stuttgart or Acapulco. But he's winning MC, Barcelona, Rome and then RG. Which makes his list of clay titles even more impressive. But the number I would prefer he matched would be Borg's 6 RG titles. He looks like he will match it. Hopefully next year.

Oh definately Nadal should break Borg's record if he wants to be the GCCOAT. Afterwards, he should have the record for most MC, Rome, Hamburg/Madrid, Barcelona titles since they are the most prestigious clay titles (I don't think anyone has more Barcelona, MC or Rome titles than Nadal). And only if he wants, he can snatch those meaningless clay titles to beat Vilas' record.
