Medvedev, Tsitsipas Headline Strong Hamburg Field

All about the ATP 500 tennis tournament in Hamburg, Germany
Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas lead the way at the Hamburg European Open, an ATP 500 tournament in Germany. Held the week preceding Roland Garros in the revised 2020 ATP Tour calendar, the tournament also features two other Top 10 players: Gael Monfils and Roberto Bautista Agut.

Medvedev returns to Hamburg for the first time since his debut as a qualifier in 2016. This will mark the Russian's first appearance on clay since last year's Roland Garros. He enjoyed a breakthrough in the second half of 2019, when he reached six straight finals, highlighted by two ATP Masters 1000 titles and a runner-up finish at the US Open.

Tsitsipas, the reigning Nitto ATP Finals champion, will be making his Hamburg debut. The Greek will be looking to rebound from a loss in his clay return this past week at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia (l. to Sinner).
Nikoloz Basilashvili will go for his third straight title against a strong Hamburg field that also includes Andrey Rublev, Fabio Fognini, Diego Schwartzman, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Cristian Garin and Kevin Anderson. Garin won two clay-court titles earlier during season at the Rio Open presented by Claro and Cordoba Open.

Right off the bat, interesting matches include:

[1] Daniil Medvedev vs Casper Ruud
Kyle Edmund vs [6] Fabio Fognini
[3] Gael Monfils vs Taylor Fritz
Felix Auger-Aliassime vs [8/WC] Karen Khachanov
[5] Andrey Rublev vs Nikoloz Basilashvili
Wasn't Rublev v Basil the final last year?! What a difference. Basil has won this twice in a row but I don't think his current form will permit a run here!

Have a feeling Koepfer is going to make it, but Ruud and Schwartzman not so much. Might be 3 lucky losers tomorrow added into the draw (Kyle Edmund was another withdrawal).

It's not bad at all.
Nice top 8 seeds. Fognini may get Ruud 2nd round. Monfils gets Garin 2nd round. FAA vs Diego 2nd round.
Struff v Khach 1st round (Lajovic 2nd), Garin v Nishikori 1st, Humbert v Medly round one good.

500s a round longer for those top seeds and not good right before RG, but the points should motivate.

Tsits should win this and if he servebots five rounds not too bad. Medly needs points on clay and he could make final.

I don't know why Med's in this one tbh. I know he needs the 500s points, he's got a 0 from last year for never doing a 500 after the USO, but I'd have skipped this and did the St Pete 500 after the French (he's doing that one too).

Schwartzman is out. Lucky loser will be Bublik.
If you now put that beautiful drawl image up a few posts in the OP and replace some of that stuff, I can easily capture the draw as it updates and easily update that image so it changes as we progress. We got to promote this tournament!

What is the realistic projection for Nishikori's return? Max. top 30?

Garin closes him out 6-0 6-3 in R1. Positive to play against one of arguably the current top 10 clay players IMO just before RG but he has a lot of work to do before then.

I thought he looked pretty good and is starting to get back his form.
Well I hope so I just don’t think he’s made the jump the Shapo has recently. He’s much younger so plenty of time I just don’t see it right now.

Khachanov dug out of a big hole to defeat Struff. Down a double break 3-0, he fought back to 4-4, lost a break again, then won 3 consecutive, including Struff's last 2 service games.
