When it comes to serving stats, there is no bigger player, literally or figuratively, than 6’11” Ivo Karlovic. The Croatian, who is on track to soon become the all-time ace-serving king, is a master of digging himself out of trouble on serve.

He is the only player on tour who comes close to holding serve from a 0/40 deficit half the time. Of the 17 times he has been in a 0/40 hole in 2015, he has dug himself out eight times to hold serve. That’s a recovery rate of 47 per cent, way ahead of second-placed Denis Istomin at 39 per cent and John Isner at 38 per cent.

Holds from 0/40 (In 2015, minimum five holds)

Player Holds 0/40 Times 0/40 %
Ivo Karlovic 8 17 47
Denis Istomin 7 18 39
John Isner 8 21 38
Sam Groth 5 14 36
Roger Federer 6 17 35

At 15/40, Karlovic has his opponents exactly where he wants them. From this deficit Dr. Ivo rallies to hold serve more than two-thirds of the time. Two other players also have a better than even-money chance of holding serve from this position: Canadian Milos Raonic bails himself out 53 per cent of the time and John Isner holds serve 51 per cent of the time.

Holds from 15/40 (In 2015, minimum 15 holds)

Player Holds From 15/40 Times Down 15/40 %
Ivo Karlovic 27 39 69
Milos Raonic 17 32 53
John Isner 22 43 51
Vasek Pospisil 18 39 46
Roger Federer 17 37 46
Kei Nishikori 27 60 45

How do these category leaders compare to the game’s dominant quartet of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal, known as the Big Four? From 0/40, Federer is fifth on the overall list, holding 35 per cent of the time. Djokovic holds a respectable 25 per cent of the time, but Murray, at 13 per cent, and Nadal at 11 per cent, rarely claw back from a 0/40 deficit to hold.

What is worth noting is Federer has not only been good at being clutch but the number of times he has got into that difficult spots (0-40, 15-40) are significantly better than even Djokovic. Rafa and Murray have got themselves in such situations frequently.
