...this might be the rare year where the #8 player is picked via the major titleists exception.

The criteria to qualify for the ATP Finals are as follows:

  1. Players who finish the season ranked in the top seven automatically qualify
  2. The eighth spot is reserved for a player who won a Grand Slam event in the current year and is ranked from 8th-20th
  3. If more than one player won a Grand Slam event in the current year and is ranked from 8th-20th, then whichever of these players is highest-ranked is awarded the eighth spot; whichever of these players is second highest-ranked is made first alternate
  4. If there is no player who won a Grand Slam event in the current year and is ranked from 8th-20th, then the eight spot is awarded to the player ranked eighth, irrespective of Grand Slam results

With Djokovic and Kyrgios both potential Wimbledon titleists and possibly outside of the top 8 in the race, it's a possibility.

also Gaudio in 2004 he was ranked 10 and pushed Andre Agassi and Nalbandian, who were ranked 8 and 9 out of the tournament

The ATP is as good as dead. Time for (the Djoker to start?) a new alternative tour à la LIV Golf. The age of decoupling has begun - why should tennis not join the party?

PS I see the ATP website is covering Wimby as if nothing had happened, even though it is famously not sanctioning the event. Weak weak weak. A few dudes with some balls and some brains need to get together and put a nail in the coffin of this rotten organization.

I kept seeing conflicting reports. Does Wimbledon count or not?

I thought it was still being accorded Slam status (and then it would count), but now I'm not so sure.
