For those not following the qualies, so far we've already lost Daniel Altmaier, Taro Daniel, Lloyd Harris, Fabio Fognini, Adrian Mannarino, and Christopher Eubanks, to name just a few that I recognize.
Unfortunate that things have gone so steadily downhill for the Wizard after his great run a couple of years ago to reach a career high. Hopefully Adrian can turn it around. The top 100 is more interesting with him in it!

Botic having to go through qualifying. I didn't realise he had dropped quite so low in the rankings.
Yeah, that was a surprise. There were a few names in qualifying that I thought had been doing decently lately, but I'm not sure where the cutoff was for this draw.

Hugo Gaston "Drop shot Dragon" is opening up Bagel shop on Spirizzi in the qualies... LOL. i guess now we now what the weakness is when you play Spirizzi :-D

Ha ha. I like the nickname. I still remember when he played Thiem in RG a few years ago he had like 45 drop shots or something. Thiem won the match, but his legs were gone in his next match.

What are you honestly expecting from him? He's ancient.

Yes, in fact I had reported it in the preview comment.
So you did! Sorry I missed that at the beginning of the post with the draw. Shapo has shown some good form recently, and Alcaraz hasn't really caught fire yet this year, despite the win in Rotterdam. I think he'll have too much for Shapo if they meet, but this one could have fireworks if both play their best tennis.

Albert Portas from Spain was the original player nicknamed the "Drop Shot Dragon."
Played 1994-2007

In the second (and final) round of the qualies we lost a few more somewhat notable players, namely TTW favorite Cristian Garín, Botic van de Zandschulp, and James Duckworth.

I didn't know my man Kyrgios is still playing. I thought he retired?? If so hoping he can go couple rounds. Bring some excitement back.

This could be the match of the year in terms of oohs and aaahs. They will be trying to one-up each other athletically. These are the two most dynamic players on tour when they're clicking.
Ben Shelton might want in on that dynamic player list.

With his style of play, he can keep doing well at a later age. But mostly it's his unconventional approach to everything that is so fun and interesting to see. He plays differently, dresses differently, acts differently, uses his equipment very differently...

Yeah and I don't totally disagree after watching him bludgeon Musetti, who I also put on that list. But Shelton is a real power player, not as much of an artist as Carlos or Lorenzo and doesn't have the effortless graceful power that Shapo does
Well, dynamic and graceful aren't always intertwined. Musetti plays beautiful tennis. Smooth and, yes, graceful tennis. Not sure I would call him dynamic in his movement in general. Likewise, I don't think I would consider Alcaraz graceful, but dynamic for sure (ditto Shelton). Shapo is a pretty good mix of both.

I specifically didn't say Carlos was graceful lol, would not make that leap.

I used "dynamic" in a broader sense of being exciting to watch but I appreciate using it more specifically. And therefore yes Musetti is a little relaxed in his movement, he never looks like he's really going fast. FH is a little ungainly as well. But he's creative and hits a big ball and uses spin very well. His grass form last year really surprised everyone even me.

The highlights I saw from the Nishikori-Munar match were great! Nishikori still has a lot of explosive power on those groundstrokes and his technique is smooth as always. Hope he still has some gas left in the tank. Very tough first round.

Technique is gold, which is why Davydenko was so right about the deficiencies of modern players. Nishi, La Monf, and of course Nole are all the latest proof of this.

Holy sh*t this Colton Smith kid (U of Arizona) can play - scary good from the baseline. Current level seems to be top 50.........and he barely even plays on the tour! Interesting matchup with Michelson next round...

Yeah seems absurd that he’s going back for another year of college

Watching Zizou Bergs on T2, what an entertaining personality! Gonna be rooting for this guy, he's got a good game to go along with the personality.

Watanuki is so fun to watch. He looks like he really enjoys himself on court. Bublik, on the other hand, looks so depressed. Some progress in that he actually did try a little harder today and saved a bunch of break points.

it's getting late here and the announcers are lit lol Courier asked Goodall who is from England but now lives in America if he has gotten his "gold" card yet lol when Goodall replied he just has his green card. Courier then replied uh oh ICE is at the door before commercial break lol

The highlights I saw from the Nishikori-Munar match were great!Very tough first round.

I saw Munar playing on Rio Open. He gave me the impression of being a quite limited clay court. So, Nishikori having problems to take him out, is likely a very bad sign, although he had cramps, which is sort of a relief (although it's also a bad sign on its own)
