Side note: I’m watching on TennisTV. Is there something about the angle/camera that’s slowing the ball down? Are both these guys just super timid because it’s a final? This looks like it’s being played at .85 speed

Embarrassing to let Khachanov beat you in a Masters Final. This is the lowest point in tennis history

I don't know, I think it's a pretty high level match.
I didn’t mean to say it was low-level, there were just some super strange cat-and-mouse points there toward the end. Shelton losing three set points, KK missing a ton of first serves, way more slice from Shelton than normal.

Definitely not a timid last four points from Karen!! Good finish.

I owe Karen an apology. I thought that set was dusted after he got broken serving for it. Expected him to lose in straights after that happened.

I'd love to see Miloslav Mecir play these types, if he could be bothered. 62 63, go home- despite having essentially no serve.

This is a mess with the line system processing info, but no audio.
It really didn't have to be if the ump is still getting the redlight on his tablet and he can just call it. But, the players didn't seem convinced and the ump seemed to be caught between continuing calling it himself and waiting for audio to be fixed.

Strange things often happen to umpires.

Khachanov is a beast at BO5. Has this floor level that can be as high as a top 5 player in best of fives, at his very best. He's the second best Russian from the 90s after Medvedev IMO

He lost to Evan’s last year in five at what was/is the longest USO match ever, 5 hrs and 35 minutes. It tested my bladder as well. If you left from the 4th on it was hard to get back into the smallish court 6. The combination of heat and earlier Honey Deuces made it grueling for players and spectators alike.

I said when he's at his best. Noted what I said. When hes playing at his best his floor is a top 5-8 level in BO5. Will get to QF comfortably

I know, it just reminded me of the match. I feel that spectators don’t get enough credit for going five sets. They should maybe be awarded points and some prize money too maybe tied to the level of heat and humidity. This is not yet a fully fleshed out idea.

Poor from Karen there/nice serving from Ben. But that final game—the whole set, really—highlights my frustration with Shelton. He’s constantly trying to be this all-court variety Alcaraz-archetype of player when he does not have the natural talent/touch to do it. He’s a strong athletic kid who should just grit his teeth and embrace playing from the baseline and hitting it big off both wings when the opportunity emerges, not try to carve a drop +1 when he has a fairly easy putaway
