I find something so off-putting about Shelton’s father. But then again I despise all fathers who coach their sons so

Congrats to Ben on winning one of the worst fielded Masters 1000 events ever.

I'm being super negative, but it's hard to see this as a big deal when he barely survived Karen Khachanov of all people.

This tournament, more than any other, feels like a testament to the importance of the big3 for the sport of men’s tennis and the coming vacuum. I mean this felt like watching an ATP 500 in January. Of course it’s aided by the abhorrent scheduling and that we’re coming right off the natural surface swing, but man. Sinner and Alcaraz have this entire sport on their shoulders. We are quite a far cry away from a semifinal lineup of Djokovic/Federer and Nadal/Murray, aren’t we

If Tiafoe can make 2 SF and Fritz one final , it is in the realm of possibility for Shelton to make a final if Carlos is upset like last time

It's just in your head.

Shelton Father is level headed, and is a good influence for Shelton.

Just like Casper Ruud father.

Not like those Tennis Parents who are Crazy and hurting their children Career.
Fair play. Something always seems a bit suspicious to me when a parent injects themselves into their kid’s life in such an intimate way. But they do seem to have a good relationship obviously it’s been working, so I will refrain from further judgement

he was a really classy guy when he was on tour. saw him play live many times.

I agree. I remember Bryan Shelton and he was always very solid in his demeanor as a player. He very much seems like a great coach for his son and I'm always skeptical about parents coaching sport at the highest levels.

This seems to be one of the rare success stories on a professional and personal level so far as one can say from a distance.

Ben didn't play his best match tennis wise but he competed extremely well given the situation and not a lot of guys can do that. That bodes well for him.

Karen doesn't get enough credit for being a really good guy on tour and while it's true he has some gaps in his game and can get tight, he really does also pound the ball.

I owe Karen an apology. I thought that set was dusted after he got broken serving for it. Expected him to lose in straights after that happened.

Congrats to Ben on winning one of the worst fielded Masters 1000 events ever.

That apology did not last long :(

Very disappointing that Sinner and Alcaraz skipped Toronto and are in the draw for Cincinnati
I live in Canada and wanted to see them live.
How can we get bigger names to come to our tournament?
Make them lose at wimbledon early

Great final.
Watched the extended highlights. Good that Toronto got a high quality final. Very good play by both and i am impressed by Ben Shelton, especially his demeanour during the match. Very focused and playing more within himself. Is good for his game imo. Interesting player to watch !

platinum? lol it's not like his playing tsitsipus on the other end. Khachanov is in pretty good form and has a great return game (as demonstrated last night against zed, who is a much better server than Ben is). Khachanov does need to bring his 1st serve % up for this final, tho. For a 6'6" guy, his 1st serve is very underwhelming.
I was saying from the point of view of Sinner/Alcaraz not being in the tournament.

Finally the next American who can hold the flag after Roddick. Ben may surprise us all. Hopefully this will give him a shot in the arm for the US Open.

Will new rankings be published?
If so, Shelton is 6th, career best.
Just checked, new ATP/WTA rankings will be next published on Aug 18.
Points after Toronto M1000 will not become official next Monday. This is because of overlap Toronto/Cincinnati.
So no new rankings next Monday Aug 11.

We can only follow the Live Rankings, but they do not generate any official data.

Smug mode on - I called it :-D

Just felt he had it in him and if he strung it together he had a good shot.

I watched it on tennisTV one set at a time with several hours gap in between each set.
Just finished this afternoon here.
Easy enough to avoid the result and not look at the progress bar while skipping forwards to the start of each set.

What turned this match around was Ben started slicing. KK did not do as well once Ben started that. He was being bossed and his DHBH was getting picked on.

It was still close and could have gone either way but for a few points.

Bryan is a great level headed tennis dad.
He must be so proud!

At last a US man wins!

Neither player was remonstrating negatively with the coaches - so nice to see.

I'll take the odd Hawkeye live tech glitch over ALL useless calls and time wasting Hawkeye with line judges used to consume!

I also heard that the tournament grossed it's best gate revenues etc, so they will probably continue with the format!

To all the moaners - some of you guys will NEVER be happy.
Hope moaning makes you a little bit happy;)

And ... What a great ending ceremony with Ben presenting medals to all the ball kids. Some of them were catching his 232kph serves out of the air! He noted that in his speech.

The Rodgers Bank rep sure dressed up!

Shen Belton is a Masters 1000 champion. Well deserved.
Yah man, dude did well, will no doubt take the confidence gained forward for the remaining season. KK put up a good match, had a good tournament too.
BS becomes the 4th first time winner of a Masters 1000 this year, preceded by Draper / Mensik / Ruud. Interesting that 3 of the 4 are youngsters, and Carlitos, though not a first time winner this year, bagged the other 2 to date, is also a youngster. Mid-Gen doldrums continue, it seems.
Unexpected outcomes in Canada, youngsters prevailing. Sounds about right.

In winning 2025 Toronto, Shelton adds a 3rd ATP title to his tally, the 1st of the season and the highest 1 yet. He has now won titles at every level of ATP ranking ie. a Masters 1000, a 500 and a 250. Will his next target now be a Slam? (Of the current top #10, only Zverev and Musetti now lack a title this season).

He becomes:

1. 1 of 22 active players to win at least 1 Masters 1000.
2. 1 of 84 players to win at least 1 Masters 1000 in the history of the sport.
3. 1 of 4 players to win a maiden Masters 1000 title this season (along with Draper, Mensik, Ruud).
4. 1 of 5 different players to win a Masters 1000 title this season (along with the above mentioned 3 plus Alcaraz).
5. 1 of 23 active players to win at least 1 big title (Slams, WTF, Olympics, Masters).
6. The youngest American player to win a Masters 1000 title since 21 year old Roddick at 2004 Miami.

What i wonder is: has he reached his full potential, and maybe overachieved with 3 slam finals, a Master, and top10 for a long time? If so, maybe we should just be satisfied. Or could he have done better with proper coaching?
I think his slam finals are definitely an overachievement for someone at his level of ability who has a respectable record against top 10 players but struggles against top 5 or top 3 players but on the other hand i think he has the talent to reach a higher level of play than what he has shown so far so he has underachieved on that front. It looked like he could reach a higher level of play in 2024 but he has only regressed since his stomach parasite with the exception of his good run in Madrid. He gets a lot of criticism because you would expect someone with three slam finals and a career high ranking of world number 2 to be top top tier and he is not on that level, despite being a very solid player at his best. His penchant for losing against lower-ranked players in upsets also draws criticism. For example you have someone like De Minaur who does not have Ruud's resume but he is far more of a lock against lower-ranked players than Ruud.
