Alcaraz still has an injury question mark over his participation but I believe he is due to test his arm at some point today so we await confirmation.

Hopefully Rafa can flip the script against ADM this time (assuming discount Shelton doesn’t cause any surprises)

I'm sure Nadal would have preferred something other than another match against ADM...even better conditions for ADM here I'd assume

I think the favourite may be Casper Ruud, he is in excellent form. Alcaraz may play or not, but I doubt he will be at his best and Sinner really dislike this tournament.

Realistically speaking, Sinner is the favourite.
Compared to the contenders, Sinner is hopeless on clay, and has won a total of ONE title on clay in his career (Umag 2022) and won't win anything on clay in 2024.

Its easier to hit De Minaur off the court on Madrid, whereas Barcelona favors the retriever.
And at Barcelona, in the press conference after his 1st Round victory, Nadal said he was saving himself for Madrid and Rome-
“There were things [I could have done] today that [could have given] me the possibility to play better today, but don’t give me the possibility to play the next day or the next couple of days, or in terms of weeks, in Madrid or Rome."
And despite holding himself back, Nadal already played a 67 minute set vs. peak De Minaur, and it was an extremely close 7-5 set that hinged on a couple of crucial points.

But the circumstances (higth of Madrid, benefits serving, balls travel fast) might suit him. But pollen allergy has to be fixed ...

Pretty brutal for Sinner to have two big servers like Jarry/Karen in R4 with Ruud/Dimi/FAA and Tsitsi/Medvedev/Nadal to follow it up. Despite his strengths as mentioned before he has always crashed out before, partly due to his hay fever, so let us see if he clears the qualifier hurdle first...

Alcaraz might pull out despite wanting to play, so he can't be the number one favourite. He faces also big servers & ball strikers from the go, just look at those names. Might be one of the toughest three first rounds I have seen for quite some time for a number 2 seed...

First fix of the tournament. Thiem 5-3 down and a break down twice in the 5th set, wins 4 games in a row. Blatantly sold.

Nadal drew 1028th ranked wildcard Darwin Blanch.

How does a 1000-ranked player get a wild card into a 1000?

I assume there some story / reason, but it's not evident to me.

But Madrid is fast clay.
But Sinner is just not a contender on clay, period.
History proves this, and he even said a few days ago that he doesn't expect to win more than 2 matches at Madrid.
I'd be shocked if Sinner wins a clay masters event this year.

he's much better playing someone who goes for big shots, and misses a lot of them...ADM will go into lockdown again and Rafa will have to be prepared for a three set three hour war

Higher elevation, so thinner air for the ball to travel through, no?
All of it is slow, there's no such thing as fast clay. People claimed the blue clay was "fast," Fed always said it was equally as slow as red clay, the footing was just different and more difficult.

So at this point Tsitsipas is the Favorite to win it all at the french open,,,,right ?? we all know Sinner is not his best on clay, Novak is rusty and Old,,,, and Alcarez is semi injured and don't know if he will be 100 % by paris rolls around... And we all know he lost to Casper last sunday cause he was dead tired,, and he said that after:):)

OK... It's actually the slowest court in all of tennis.

u0sdclk4abez.jpg
My fast clay comment was tongue in cheek, but thanks for the graph. I didn’t know the court was so slow. Effectively however, due to thin high elevation air as mentioned by others, the ball travels faster, which favours big servers and aggressive players.

Exactly. The old graph shows that Madrid clay slowed down the ball most but due to the elevation of 650 m is the fastest clay master. So in tennis parlance it is fast-playing and high-bouncing.

If you think about the traditional Spanish player it is a great surprise indeed that the Spanish Master 1000 selects the most decelerating surface...

Watch Nicolas Jarry, he could cause some upsets here. But no candidate for the title imo

Thiem struggling to take the big Kokk on Pista 4 - can see how frustrated he is with himself, but no rhythm and playing super defensively

Second set is more competitive, shame Thiem didn't take his break chance at 4-3. Now one game from the loss.

Edit: ...aaaand he's out.

Thiem needs to give it up. At this point I can’t even watch his matches, I watched 20 minutes of him nearly losing to some bum named “McCabe” in Aus earlier this year and I just can’t do it, it’s an awful viewing experience. No belief. Usually I’m all for seeing the wily veteran find ways to win as their Plan A is sapped by age but with him it’s just sad

I always thought he was slightly over rated.

That’s 100% on point. It really is a sad sight
