Berrettini and Shapovalov enter the draw using their protected ranking and Nishikori is back with a WC.

If Alcaraz and Sinner meet again it will be in the final as they are now on different sides of the draw with Novak having pulled out.
On this occasion Sinner defends more points than Alcaraz; 600 compared to 360 with Carlos currently holding 735 more points than Jannik as they enter the tournament - Carlos: 8445
Jannik: 7710
Dannil: 6765
(having already deducted the points they all gained at last year’s Miami Masters)
Medvedev defends 1000 points as last years winner and therefore has virtually no chance of improving his current ranking even if he happens to defend his title. Unless of course, Sinner loses in his first two matches and Med lifts the trophy.
Sinner will only take the No 2 spot from Alcaraz if he wins the title and Carlos fails to reach the semis.

The draw takes place at 1300hrs today local time which is about 6 hours from now. Will update the thread with the draw pdf and projected paths of the top seeds once we know them.

Nadal is absent, too, right? So, I'd say that's another notable absence.

I believe that you are right about Sinner/Alcaraz and the rankings. @dking68 - probably the board's most die-hard Sinner fan - keeps telling me he doesn't care about Sinner getting from #3 to #2, only to #1. I personally cherish every ranking spot achievement of my favorite players so for me making it to #2 would be a worthwhile accomplishment. But besides that, there could be a fair amount riding on it in the draw at some of the upcoming clay-court events, as the #3 will face an SF versus Djokovic or the other of Alcaraz/Sinner, whereas the #2 will face an SF of Medvedev or the other. Even given Djokovic's recent stumbles, the opportunity to avoid him in the SF of a clay-court event and be drawn against Medvedev instead is to my mind a very helpful one. And the same applies for Wimbledon, although there might be a fair amount of fluctuation in the rankings by then.

Number 2 is very unimportant. The only importance is that he gets his half of the draw in slams. Number 1 is what Sinner cares about

To you, clearly. To me, no. I would care if a favorite of mine made it to #6 having previously only been #7. Not much point in trying to persuade the other on this, though.

That depends on how you measure it. Over the past 12 months Jack Draper has the highest return rating. Sinner is fractionally above Alcaraz and Medvedev.
If you’re looking at percentage of 1st serve return points won then Alcaraz leads the field, on 2nd serve return points won, then it’s Sinner
 
Djokovic has been the best ever in Miami and I think Roddick and Isner both have outserved and taken him down here.

Sinner can lose to some big servers but sadly all the big servers are dead, Hurkacz is the next out. Where are our servebots?

Edit: Djokovic didn't lose to both in Miami but IW. I recant my statement.

Medvedev Rublev can go either way. Otherwise Medvedev sinner can have a lot of fireworks. I am not sure sinner will win it but he is current favorite..

Was more comfortable picking Carlos winning IW.
 
Not a bad draw for Alcaraz. Shelton could be interesting if he shows up, as could Hubi, as a former champion IIRC. But still it's a good road to the semis, and Zverev's form is inferior to Medvedev's I would say. So if Carlos can keep his momentum going, he should have a great chance to reach the final. Sinner's path is probably a bit more difficult, so I've picked Alcaraz to win it. But if they do meet in the final, I would say the chances are pretty even!

Rubles to get terminated in R2 by a third Czech player (Machac), after getting dusted by Lehecka in IW and Mensik (!) in Doha. Guess Czechs don’t like Russians too much
