Istomin played great in that match in 2017 but he had been to a few 4th rounds in Slams and been a top 40 player before. It wasn't too much of a shock he was playing that well.
Yes,but I thought Istomin in a sense that he was outside of top 100 at the time.
Nobody really expected that level from him against Djokovic in RLA of all places.

Hanfmann was also top 50 player at his peak.

Just shows that he is proving there are levels to this.

You don't win 71 big titles unless you are a seriously exceptional talent.
Well yea. Djokovic is the greatest Open Era/modern player to ever play this game. It's hard to deny it at this point. Whether he is the greatest of all time is more of a debate but not of the modern era.

With that said, he's retiring sooner than later and the tour is not stepping up. Instead of the gap narrowing, it feels like Iike it's widening between them and Alcaraz and Sinner.

Yea it was a surprise he played that well that day but I do think he had a few scalps before that. Obviously, Djokovic is the biggest scalp of his career though.

If med wants to make some noise - he’ll have to get through today, beat Tien and ADM to make the semi’s. If he’s finding his form- he shouldn’t have an issue to atleast make it there.

The whole Moscow return position thing actually is such a double edged sword. One point the depth he gets on the return gets any rally done before even starts, the next it becomes the reason he loses without even two shots in because opponent is at the net

What I’m noticing is he’s been getting more depth on his balls lately which is why he’s winning more matches…truly was a key variable to his success.

Yes, with him gone, there is a big gap left, and other players need to step up to fill it quickly.

He is getting back on track, but one major thing I was liking and was present in early rounds of both Beijing and the week before that was he was openly trying to be aggressive. Like a legit attacking player then since the Tien match and the match before it (It probably was Fokina too) he went back to being a backboard.

Man, Zverev getting blitzed by Rinderknech again. If anybody needs some time away from the sport to reset its him. He was a legit contender last year and is a pile of mush right now. He's still young enough to salvage his career as a top second tier player.

Zverev is a bit lazy, never changed hes weak FH and never changed hes daddy coach that tells him everyday how good he is

Medvedev has been playing better in the last two tournaments and being more aggressive. Will be interesting to see if he can keep this up. Fokina lost to him easily in Beijing and is down a set, but looks like he's starting to find his range.

The day after tomorrow will be much cooler in Shanghai. So winners today will have better feelings in their next round matches.
A Djokovic vs Medvedev final for old times sake would be something.

Given the mental state(not form) Medvedev has been, I think we need to take it match to match. Lets not forget Med's last two losses have been when being a set and a break up. This Fokina match can go south easily

While that's true, he was consistently going deep in slams, at least the quarters in 6 of 7 slams prior to Wimbledon then lost the 1st round to Rinderknech there and has been in a tailspin ever since.

It's really surprising the year Zverev is having after he started it with a slam final. He's been horrid

Have to look at the context of this AO final. First 4 rounds were a cakewalk. The quarter against Paul was a monumental choke fest and disastrous level. As bad as FAA/ADM's USO quarter. Zverev should've lost it in 3. The semi was a withdrawal. He almost lost the opening set to a player who couldn't walk.
