Carlitos is the defending champion who needs to retain his crown in order to hold on to the newly reacquired No 1 spot. Having just won IW, in great form, he stands a good chance of capturing the sunshine double.
The draw will take place later today.

Top seeds:
1) Carlos Alcaraz
2) Stefanos Tsitsipas
3) Casper Ruud
4) Daniil Medvedev
5) Felix AA
6) Andrey Rublev
7) Holger Rune
8) Hubert Hurkacz
9) Taylor Fritz
10) Jannik Sinner
11) Cameron Norrie
12) Francis Tiafoe
13) Alexander Zverev

I’ve swapped out Ruud, Rublev and Hurkacz from the 9 poll choices in favour of Tiafoe, Sinner and Zverev given the latter’s results in IW. Just for a change although I’m sure some of you won’t agree with me. Arguably Norrie did better than Rune and Tsitsipas crashed out in R1 of IW.
Makes for a discussion anyways….

If Alcaraz can put together an incredible run of wins, hopefully it ends with a big win with a first RG this year. He needs to continue to build on this momentum now, and not take his eyes off the prize, the more he wins the greater the momentum heading into Paris and opportunity to take his second slam there. All eyes on him in Miami.

Now lets see how the others respond to him there. Should be a great event.

Practice schedule is out... Thiem and Zeverev practicing together ,,,, this has got to be the jamm packed practice ever. Why don't they have webcam on these courts.... we have to call James Blake and have him fix this,,,, Do you guys have his Cellphone number ?

After Miami’22 it was WATLYNM time (lost 2R, first match M-C) for Alcaraz; after Madrid’22 he skipped Rome (ankle?). Perhaps he has better luck defending a title than Umag and Rio. The slightly quicker Miami conditions will reward a few players to insure it’s not a cakewalk to the potential repeat.

Zverev (17 break point against Danil) , huge serve, heavy strokes... might be still penalized by movement as he's not there yet
I would love to see him at the top before RG to make him a serious contender there

Note: I'm not a fan at all but I must say that having the opportunity to see him back the level displayed against rafa at FO would be amazing

There will some severe weather changes between the qualifying/practice blocks and 1R/2R. A heat wave is headed to FL by the weekend. It is unseasonably cool today in Orlando but the high temperature on Friday will be in the low 90s. Miami will be at least in the mid to upper 80s over the weekend.

UPDATE: The draw is apparently at 12 noon local time, about e5 minutes from the time of this post

Picking Rune. I think Charles will lose to someone random and Rune is best equipped to get the win from then on. Really, only he and Charlie have the necessary champion's mentality. FAA, Sinner, etc are proven flops.

Less than 24 hours ago it was Nuno Borges wrapping up a three-set win for the Phoenix Challenger. Then he has traveled east, losing recovery time and proceeding into 1R qualies at Miami. He had started out well with an opening break vs Steve “The Package” Johnson. 2-1 up the break.

Why even bother? Just wrap up winner crown for Alcaraz already. How’s he ever gonna lose?
When the supposed invincible one has already lost a match this year from ahead to a good-not-great Norrie and speculation ran rampant Alcaraz had reinjured a hamstring, is it really a lock he’s going to do the Sunshine Double?

Shevchenko might have traveled with Borges after their Phoenix final last night. He is now on court and leading early vs Tabilo.

Borges is up a set and an early break in the second.

Another week and still no Mr van Rijthoven. Beginning to worry.

I can't believe musetti is seeded 18. That guy hasn't qon a match in months feels like. Also berretini seeded very high. Ben Shelton gets his first seed in a masters 1000 at 32.

0 votes for Medvedev are so funny. It was also before Rotterdam. Then he won 3 titles and about 50% voted for him for his victory in Indian Wells. Although everyone said that court didn't suit him.

He looked like world beater yesterday. Hard to say he won’t keep winning, forever, if his health hold up. Lol…

Before the needless “lol” you addressed my point. With poor grammar.

Forever? Within a month there will be two guys added to the mix that own 44 slams between them. LOL

How many fans are staying away this year due to the continued lawlessness/violence related to obnoxious and dangerous Spring Break cretins? It may be a big number if they made the mistake to book their rooms in Miami Beach hotels. Two fatal shootings this past weekend have spurred a restriction on alcohol sales instead of the harsher midnight curfew proposed to the City Commission. If the curfew had been passed (rejected Monday night) there is no way to get back from Hard Rock before midnight after night sessions.

An electronic music festival at South Beach is scheduled for the weekend so there’s a UUUGGGEEE crowd expected.

Shelton getting a seed and a bye in contrast to the IW non-seeded status and bad draw and resulting loss to Fritz 2R. What a difference a few points can make! Now he needs to make a mark and some points/$$$ by beating the Mannarino/Shang winner and perhaps Hurkacz 3R. It’s gravy after that but winnable gravy (Coric or Norrie).

I wonder if Gator Nation heads down The FL Turnpike to support him? They should!

From the videos I saw it looks like an entirely different country. Something like South Africa instead of South Beach. Count me out.

Later tonight, Gojo vs Borges is a rematch of the Monterrey final three weeks ago that Borges won and a NCAA national SF a few years back that the Demon Deacon from Split won.

Indian Wells by so much you can't even measure it. At IW you have almost complete access to the players and their practices. Miami the players are kept much further away from the spectators roaming the grounds.

Wait, what? Rune has some "champions mentality" that Sinner lacks? Based on what? His loss to Wrawrinka because he was more worried about what would happen at the net after the match, and how it would look on Netflix? Sinner is 100x stronger mentally than Rune.

I'd say that depends on what you are looking for, and your demographic. Haven't been to either tournament, but the IW crowd looks a lot older on average, and less diverse (if that matters to you). Miami a bit more variety and cosmopolitan. Or perhaps you can say old money vs nouveau riche. Either way, you are better off just going to the US Open.

Geez Kokkinakis losing to Benoit Paire of all people in qualifying... yikes.

Fellow Aussie Chris O'Connell also out to Watanuki.

Some good news with Jordan Thompson qualifying by knocking out Machac and also Vukic getting in by defeating Kovacevic.

Rune's going to wilt in the heat and run out of gas in the 3rd or 4th round, maybe earlier. Guy needs some fitness.

I can't believe they didn't give a wildcard to that real estate agent that qualified for Del Ray Beach and beat Jack Sock. Are these organizers so daft? Would have made for some excellent publicity.

Well, when you decide to let everyone run around with guns, you get the wild west... in the east.

Talk about a tough draw for defending champs in the dubs: Isner/Hurkacz must play Lammons/Withrow 1R and then most probably defending RG champs Rojer/Arevalo. The American pair won last week at the supercharged Phoenix 175 Challenger, coming through a section of guys with oodles of wins at every level. They were also finalists at Acapulco.
