ATP Next Gen Finals, 11/28-12/2

Not only did Medjedovic win three easy sets, but he had 2 or 3 set points in each of the two TB sets he lost also. So it was a convincing win over Fils who was always in trouble.

Yes, he was strangely unclutch in the 2 breakers. Performed much better when he got the break of serve in the other 3 sets.

4 of the 5 years, the winner is from a Mediterranean country. What is in the water down there? Or is it the Mediterranean diet?
Actually, TWO winners have been non-European: Chung the first year and Nakashima last year. And they happen to be the only two for whom it didn't quite work out... (for different reasons, of course)

Medji with one of the all time racket smashes after losing first set tiebreak. That racket actually looked sorry for missing long after that.

Fils was absolutely on the defensive for 75% of this match. It was all on Medji's racket. Was dictating with that massive forehand.

Oops, sorry, thought Medjedovic was the bottom seed. Have amended my post accordingly.

Pity, it would have made a much better headline!

It would have worked almost as well if he were seventh, as that's the lowest-ranked direct entrant, or arguably fourth, as you could argue that only half the draw is seeded, but sixth is just a bog standard, mid-low qualifier, I'm afraid. ;)

LOL... what happened????

(couldn't follow)

I must say, a look at the winner's list confirms your sense that the tournament is declining in influence. Three straight Next Gen champions all have won MS events and ranked within the top 4: 2018 Tsitsipas (slam finalist + tour finals champion in 2019 and world number 3), 2019 Sinner (slam semi-finalist + tour finals runner-up and world number 4), and 2021 Alcaraz (slam champion + world number 1 in 2022). Two of the three won an event bigger than an MS event the very year after they won the Next Gen (Tsitsipas and Alcaraz; of course, it took Sinner a bit longer, but he was also only 18 when he won the Next Gen, so a pretty young winner for a 21 and under event). Even Chung, the 2017 winner, was a slam semi-finalist at the very next slam before injuries derailed him.

Then the last two winners have been Nakashima and Medjedovic.

I think Medjedovic could be a Chung-level player eventually and probably reach a slam semi, perhaps even a final at some point. But I'd be pretty surprised if he followed Tsitsipas and Alcaraz in winning one of the five biggest events on the main tour within a year of winning the Next Gen. And he's two years older now than Sinner was in 2019 (so only two years younger than Sinner is now!)

And this is despite the fact that younger players are actually doing better now than they were in 2018 and 2019 - that's why this event is declining in influence (the top-ranked qualifiers aren't bothering with it. I mean, it's one thing for Alcaraz and Rune not to have played it. But neither Shelton nor Musetti did, either, and that's quite telling).

Looks like Fils is another head case who likes breaking racquets when he starts losing. Disappointed to see another young player with star potential behaving that way. Alcaraz and Sinner are a breath of fresh air in behaving well on court in general.
Agreed on all points. Watched the match with my kids who play and tried to use Fils’ mental midgetry as a teaching moment—“don’t be that guy. See how the guy acting like a moron gets crushed?”

Also surprising to me how terribly unfit/ unathletic several of these guys are. Aren’t these 19-20 year olds hungry to make it as a pro? I can’t imagine my job being “pro athlete” and having a gut like Stricker.

The guys had a blast out there, congrats to them. Due to the surface very serve and power dominated tournament. Look at his ace percentage there. Outgunning was the name of the game...

I'm not sure what success they can achieve but I wish them all the best.

Great Tournament after all. First matches were played in empty stadium but that changed after the last poule matches. These players will make inrounds into the ATP tour. Biggest upset of course Medji, when you can blast a player like Fils off the court, that is something special. Safin vibes with this guy, sheer raw power, fiesty mentality and deft touch. Fils is top 20 material for sure but seems to have already reached his plateau in many areas. Van Assche is a clever player with tremendous footwork and speed. Italians will also make inrounds in the tour for sure. Shelbayh is a treat to the eye as a player and Stricker, when physically developed, can use a playing style like his Great Swiss Countryman : Great serving and all court overwhelming attacking tennis. He's no grinder / counterpuncher for sure. And Michelsen, i do not know what to make of this guy. I think he should stop training on hardcourt and start training on clay to develop his strokes, movement and timing. Often looks like he is off balance. And work on his serve but you don't need clay for that.

Watched a little of the semi-finals, and a good bit of the final. The level in the final seemed pretty good, withs Fils and Medjedovic playing big boy tennis at certain points, and really hitting hard.

Still not convinced that the location is good for the event. I wouldn't put it past the organizers to actually pay people to attend.

Very smart bathroom break when he lost 4th set and had 3 matchpoints. Played calm and collected again and served first in the 5th, with his serve that is a big advantage
At this point, why don't they just call them "timeouts" and give each player a set number to use in between sets during a match. I think half of the annoyance comes from them insisting on the term "bathroom break," when everyone knows it isn't about that. Just set a fixed time, be strict about it, and call it a timeout.

Great stuff, Fils going to do some practice matches with Rafa.|
Yes, they asked him about it, but I don't understand at all. Why would Rafa do this? Isn't his health situation precarious right now? Why the strain on his body? I imagine he will be playing at 85%, but still.

Woah, are we calling Serbia a Mediterranean country? Really? I mean, I guess there is no rule against it, but I definitely wouldn't put it in that category.
Fils got broken, smashed his racket on the court into the crowd and missed racket abuse warning by Bernardes. 2nd racket abuse on Hamad serve got him point penalty which took him by surprise  and Hamad got 3 - 0 lead and never looked back. His volley to set up MP was exquisite, sealed it with, of course, an ace.
Yep, this is what I'm talking about. He has a certain (misplaced) arrogance, as if he is the next anointed one. The way he approached Bernardes after the point penalty was also not cool. He got pretty close to him, and definitely had a menacing posture. Is he trying to intimate the guy?

And what's with the lower umpire's chair at the Next Gen finals? I know they are always experimenting with new stuff, and I know that the chair doesn't actually need to make line calls with the automatic system, but why not keep them in a position of authority? They are already treated pretty badly by the players as it is.

Well, I criticized Michelsen about this a little bit early on, but the more I look at him, the more he seems like a big puppy that hasn't finished growing into his body yet. Some of these kids can be late bloomers, so I wouldn't pass judgement just yet. Maybe Stricker will shed the baby fat a little bit.
