Watching Fonesca vs Fils.

Youth is a superpower all on it's own, and it's great to see such a young player at this event, but truthfully I don't really see anything to write home about with Fonesca. Good backhand.

Watching these extended highlights makes me wonder how Mensik didn't win this match.
The first two sets showed all the limitations at the net of the player from the Czech Republic, who is still a fantastic talent.
It is really rare to see players with that structure move with that ease and hit with nonchalance from both sides.
Then his serve I think is destined to become one of the most efficient on the tour.
Simply Mensik has the complete package for modern tennis.

As for Tien, it is the first time I see him in action and at first glance he seems to me a left-handed De Minaur.
He is a dynamo with disconcerting mobility.
We will certainly hear more about him in the future.

Fonseca is winning
Can't be that bad right. Fils is top 30 player and Fonseca is just 18.

I didn't think sinner was exceptional as well but you see where he is today.
 
Fonseca takes down Fils in five sets, 4-1 in the fifth set.

Fun first day in Jeddah with both Fils and Mensik being upset, but my boy Michelsen pulling out a win after dropping the first set.

Should be a fun ride the rest of the way.
 
Fonseca who beats Fils again but this time on hard indoor, the biggest surprise of the day that I think few would have predicted.

At this point the situation in this blue group becomes interesting to say the least, with the underdogs Tien and Fonseca leading the group.

The 2024 edition is the one that boasts the greatest presence of top 50 players since the tournament was established, 4 players classified in the top 50 with 3 of them losing on this first day.

New top players group is emerging. Last time we saw it was when Medvedev Tsitsipas and rublev all made it to the top 10 at almost same time.

Four games is not a set no matter what this silly tournament does.

Also owns him in four game sets with no ad scoring. Next year they should use the under-10 soft balls and smaller rackets. That will make it even more unrealistic.

I remember when newbies like Pete, Mats and Chang introduced themselves on tour by winning majors not baby tournaments. :giggle:
 
I'm not watching the tournament, but it does look like the top group is shaping up to be very interesting. Fils and Mensik were the favourites for that group, but they both lost their matches. My gut says Fils can still make it through, by beating both Tien and Mensik, with the winner of the Tien-Fonseca match joining him - I favour Fonseca, but he is still so young and at that age you can easily have a bit of a letdown after a big win. So let's see how he does in the rest of the matches.

In the second group, van Assche and Michelsen should be the favourites to go through.

It does look like an interesting tournament. A shame about the sportswashing.

Shorter sets with no AD give underdogs more of a chance. Also the shorter amount of time between points have made this immensely watchable.

I didn't say he was bad, just nothing stood out (to me). Fils is flashy and Fonesca is solid. That's usually a bad match for the flashy player.

Sinner was the opposite for me. He is one of the reasons I started paying more attention to the Tour again. His power and groundstrokes were exceptional from the beginning. His flexibility and calm demeanor were also striking.

Thinking Mensik beats Fils, but hoping for a good match either way

Lol how is Fonseca just solid?
He hits massive, smoother groundstrokes than Fils and more variety than ball basher Sinner had.

Hopefully his serve is much better than alcaraz. He is 6 foot or 6'1" not sure. But let's see where he ends.

The very small sample of his matches shows huge baseline potency which would agree with the eye test of many, and a clear trend to win more the longer the rally.

He is from a (very) wealthy family and doesn’t feel butterflyish to use an old term.
 
Michelsen and Fonseca through to the semis and will top their groups whatever happens I believe. Mensik and Shang are out. Disappointing tournament for Mensik.

Basavareddy-van Assche and Fils-Tien to determine the other two finalists. I'm guessing van Assche and Fils but let's see.

Disappointing tournament for now or future on display.

The Mensik Fonseca duo is most lauded right now. Fonseca is 2-0 and Mensik who is older is 0-2.

Vs same age guys.

Could be form. Tien seemed a bit overwhelmed by the Fonseca’s firepower. Once again dominance in the longer rallies. This indicator flashed at a very young age brightly also for Alcaraz and to a slightly lesser degree for Sinner IIRC.

For Mensik it is the other way around, but this could change with more ball shape and movement…

Maybe that combo is exactly what is needed to win these days. To me, I felt like I was watching Ruud 1.5.

And Ruud has made it to finals.

His movement stands out. Just watching highlights. He looks very solid because he has great movement.
Rublev at his age sucked on movement piece but stood out as a power baseliner.

I will have to watch again, but that was actually the area where I felt Fonseca was at a disadvantage against Fils.

He does seem to read the ball very well which gives him a lot of time. It's also good to see him stand well inside the court.

Van Assche is fun to watch. He signed my hat at the USO last year. Very quiet. I worry that he's prone to injury though.

Eh, I expect more variety from a clay court player than a hard court player like Sinner. (I assume that's Fonseca's best surface?)

Fils was better at net from the looks of it. Not sure what the stats say.

He will get faster and stronger. I like that he tries to play an attacking all-court game and uses slices well, his backhand dtl is also a threat. Looks quite complete for his age, after Sinner only Alcaraz gave me similar quality vibes.

Love that he grew up mostly on clay but also exposes himself to faster surfaces and indoor. Given the strong last months of Berrettini his DC loss looks better.

At the ATP level returning becomes much harder and the serve a lot more important. He will try much and work well, from what I have seen. Nothing is granted, but I have a very hard time to make case against the kid.
